Chat, I'm prototyping a horror game and need inspiration about how to not make being stuck in a small cell maddenning/boring, you have a job inside, you're slave labour. It'd only be 10-15 minutes before you find out how to get outside and push toward some ending.you can suggest ideas or anything that sounds similar.
>>578890073How long is the game supposed to be?Who's your game for? I guess a kinda grognardy audience since you're asking here but it's still worth defining closer. What's the general gameplay like?

Finally got done with Alien: Isolation. Took me a good while since I was playing on hard and I like to take my time to explore every nook and cranny and using stealth to avoid softlocking myself due to the Soulslike saving system that only gives you two save slots at a time. Amazing game, you can really feel the passion the team had for the original Alien movie and it's incredibly faithful to the tone and style and aesthetics of it, even the pacing matches the slow burn of the movie since it takes quite a while for it to get going. There are some action setpieces too so there's a bit of Aliens DNA in it too but not a ton (not like that movie was all that action heavy either despite what some people claim) but this is inarguably one of the greatest licensed video games ever made right up there with Rocksteady's Batman Arkham trilogy.Only major critique I have is the pacing near the end it could've been an hour shorter imo, but yeah. There's a lot of walking and sneaking around and not a lot of running since doing so often attracts enemies. The AI of the Xenomorph is a little inconsistent and will sometimes just randomly decide to pop down out of the vents sometimes right next to you barely giving you enough time to react which I suppose actually enhances the tension and suspense. Almost everything about the game's mechanics and overall design is done in service of the OG film's style of suspense and horror with less focus on action than typical survival horrors though you have the option to use weapons unlike other hide-and-seek horror games, in fact near the end of the game you're better off relying more on your weapons rather than stealth when the Xenomorphs get more and more relentless. Also, don't let shitposters deter you with how they exaggerate the flamethrower's usefulness, there's limited fuel to be found and the Xeno will gradually require longer and longer bursts before it flees back up the vents.
>>579024451
>>579032690This is also basically the only game I would recommend leaving all the shitty film camera post-processing effects on (film grain, chromatic aberration, lens flares, depth of field etc.) due to how it makes everything look and feel more like the old movie the game was based on. The DoF is even implemented as an actual gameplay mechanic in the game which is cool as hell and I normally despise when modern game devs purposely try to recreate the flaws of old film cameras that the film industry all moved away from once digital cameras became widespread, but in this case it somehow works so well.Another thing I want to note is that despite /v/’s shitposts about how RE7 was just an Outlast clone, after finally playing through Alien: Isolation it is immediately obvious that this was Capcom’s major influence on everything from RE7’s tone, pacing, style, game design, gameplay, even the menu font is identical and the photorealistic graphics look very similar to A:I despite not being developed in the same engine. DD2 despite also being photorealistic and using the RE engine didn’t share that look at all. Some of the sounds also sound like they both came from the same sound database even, and the way you pick up items and the real-time crafting system are just so similar to A:I and not at all like previous RE games. Even the low enemy variety and Jack’s stalker sections can be attributed to A:I despite Mr. X and Nemesis predating that game by well over a decade.Looking at every RE engine game so far, the main game influences on those games seem to be Alien: Isolation, Dead Space, Silent Hill and The Last of Us. I’m even willing to bet that the reason why Capcom now wants to annualize Resident Evil releases again after rushing practically every game out the door so far (reminder that RE7 was technically developed in only a single year) and finally go back to making multiple different endings again is in direct response to the new Silent Hill games.
I think it's an absolute masterpiece, better than basically any of the RE engine games and any RE game that isn’t RE1R, RE2 and RE4. Ironic since Resident Evil was always heavily inspired by Alien/Aliens and now the new FPP games got directly inspired by the series again, this time by the GOAT Alien game that kicks nu-Capcom’s talentless asses. Seriously fuck IGN for giving this great game a 5.9.
It was fun I suppose.>>579032690>Only major critique I have is the pacing near the end it could've been an hour shorter imo, but yeahLike five hours shorter desu. I beat it years ago on 360 and I remember the last few hours being way too much. I should replay it though, since Isolation 2 has been announced. I did it on the hardest setting since everyone kept saying Alien was OHKO and it was actually a balanced experience especially since nearly every combat section against non-Xeno's can be stealthed. I think the only time I actually entered combat was when you have to pick something up and the game awakens like 4 or 5 Working Joes, but thats like 60% through the game and I just crafted the EMP bombs to stun them and then blasted the shit out of them.
>>579033186I said give or take about an hour because I think the setpieces and mission structure keeps the game from getting too stale despite not having much more new to show you after the 10th or so mission like when it reintroduces more Xenomorphs in the nest after Mission 14 you can now run into two at a time whereas before there was only a single one to deal with and the Working Joes in those orange hazmat suits or whatever are extremely tanky and harder to deal with than the regular ones and there are less lockers to hide in later on sometimes.

I've seen several people describe Silent Hill as "Lovecraftian" but that doesn't make sense to me, there is nothing cosmic or eldritcht in the series, you always end up uncovering the reason behind the paranormal stuff that happens and fighting back, in Lovecraftian you can't even comprehend the creatures you find.
>>579075707That’s not always true. I wouldn’t really call it Lovecraftian either since I don’t think it takes much inspiration there but in a good few stories the threat and danger is pretty easily understood. The Shadow Over Innsmouth for example is about a race of fish people gaining a foothold in human society without anyone’s notice.

Also f comes out and shows that there are no bullshit rivalries between otherworldly divinities in the setting and you can argue being used as a pawn in a scheme between competing powerful gods is itself "Lovecraftian".

I was never really into gaming news but I guess this one review was kind of a watershed moment for games journalism not being considered as trustworthy as before? He only briefly mentions gamergate but I think he overall brings up some really good points on both the game and how journalists often lack basic knowledge and taste for good game design also makes a pretty good case for why the pacing is basically perfect because of all the gameplay density very interesting stuff hopefully CA will be able to deliver again with Isolation 2 but it has been a long time nowhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RcyC5EzoeQhttps://youtu.be/_RcyC5EzoeQ

>>579228815Lots of people did back in 2014 their review video was watched over a million times and very likely could've attributed to lower sales since Isolation was just coming hot off of Colonial Marines that was a huge piece of shit the Youtuber even admits that was the reason why didn't get the game for a while at first

>>579232426Alien is a great horror movieAliens is a great action moviePrometheus and Covenant are in my opinion, two really poorly implemented films of a very cool concept.Romulus is very good. Alien 3 and Resurrection are fucking ass. The AvP movies are fun but bad. Jonesy is best boy.
>>579232426just watch Outland and pretend its in the same universe
>>579232426Alien is a straight horror film while Aliens is action horror, but both are masterpieces. 3 is boring and Resurrection is so bad it's good. Lots of people hated Prometheus because it's a mystery box movie that tries to answer questions that didn't need answers yet still fails to answer any and just sets up more questions at the end, but I honestly thought it was decently entertaining, just slightly above average. The narrative beats is probably the most similar to the first movie out of any other and it still feels like a horror movie once everything starts to go wrong. Covenant is kind of bad, but I actually really liked Romulus despite all the memberberries. Romulus also takes a lot of inspiration from Isolation. AvP movies are action horror again and Requiem proves an R rating with lots of gore doesn't automatically make a better horror movie than a PG-13 one.All of the movies are sci-fi horror, some of them are just also action, adventure, mystery. Don't listen to anyone who says Aliens isn't still a scary horror film just because it's also an action film because if you pay attention to the first movie the Xenomorph isn't actually as tough as it's depicted in Isolation, especially knowing what movie Aliens tries to copy from and how Cameron made the first Terminator film as a techno slasher copying from Halloween and what type of movies he worked on before those. It wasn't until the 90s that he moved away from horror completely, even T2 still has some horror elements but leans more towards suspense thriller overall than suspense horror.

What the fuck is going on in Resident Evil post 4? I just finished Village and kinda realized I have no fucking clue what's happening. The BSAA starts offscreen, Chris is a member (a founder???), then the BSAA becomes evil(?) offscreen, Chris is leaves and is part of what??? And now the BSAA has bioweapon soldiers which is bad, but rosemary is a bioweapon soldier which is good? Again aside from 7 (beat it a long time ago), I've been playing re from re0 to 8. I feel like most of the events of the actual story are happening somewhere else, like in some other side media or spinoff game like revelations. Am I missing something?
>>579260686shut the fuck up and shoot zombielikes, collect shit, backtrack and solve puzzles for elementary kids
>>579260686Rev 1 confirms that the BSAA is pretfy strong but also has dirty, corrupt elements inside it that's kind of the whole plot then rev2 also has claire and moira kidnapped because a corrupt terra save sold them out, the RE series is just full of shitty people who fuck up organizations that started up as good.

>>579260686>B.O.W.bad, shoot>B.O.W. (cute girl)good, protect
>>579260686Chris was a founder and so was Jill. The BSAA only came about in 2004 after Umbrella was bankrupted after trial. Most of this is still unanswered though. We don’t know what the deal is with the BSAA and the BOW soldiers and if they’re “evil”, it’s possible it’s only a handful of people up to some shady stuff. >like in some other side media or spinoff game like revelations. Am I missing something? Not in this case there isn’t but unironically yes. There’s been some very pertinent pieces of information that have only been released in some very obscure places for some weird reason. Blue Umbrella’s entire schtick and the reason for its existence for example was only really properly explained in a series of pamphlets that released with Tokyo Marui airsoft guns (there’s more to this if you’re interested)>The Umbrella Corporation was rehabilitated under corporate reorganization law, and due to its moral obligations, it dismantled its private military company, the USS, and instead established a department called the Special Cases Response Team as a field agency to the BSAA. It provides support to the BSAA, an anti-bioterror corps led by the United Nations.

Looks like there’s a new mod that tries to recreate RE4R’s deleted Chapter 0. If you didn’t know before, there was going to be an alternate intro where you played as Ashley before Leon showed up, and tried to sneak and run past Ganados before she gets captured. This seems to match up with early leaks indicating that there was a new Ashley intro, and the reveal trailer showing her running from something in the intro segment. It was likely deleted for pacing.https://www.nexusmods.com/residentevil42023/mods/7096
