Alstro AXE8 first impressionsI originally intended for this to be a part of a much larger write up for something else Amana related I was working on, but I didn’t want to water down my impressions with my usual bullshit.I think it’s very strong, but not perfect. I was a bit worried initially since it seemed like a retread of ABS (granted that is my favorite Alstro scenario) but thankfully they pivoted. The direction of the scenario is decently written, but as usual my issues are with execution. Amana and Chiyuki had sufficient room to explore their “arcs” here, but Tenka felt like she got the short end of the stick. That’s not to say her part of the story isn’t important, but it felt like she was more comic relief before transitioning to a mediator role much akin to momoiro, which again, had already been done. ABS worked so well because of Tenka IMO, so they certainly could have lifted some of what they did there for this. the way Amana is characterized here was something I had suspected and considered a possible interpretation (that I personally found very interesting to think about) but never thought they would actually write it in officially. Honoke’s performance in THAT commu gave me the type of dopamine hit that runs down your whole body when I got to it, it was just that visceral. I always thought the Castcolle performance was pretty good, but she genuinely pushes it to another level here. Amana’s Plove IMO is extremely heavy, and for the type of person she is, the way she acts in this scenario felt inevitable given the circumstances she found herself in. The whole commu is so memorable for me BECAUSE it’s such a departure from Amana’s usual depiction, but I think it’s extremely well foreshadowed so as not to be out of character. I’d love to expand on this further, but I know people are reading these spoilers without having read the scenario. Please. You need to experience it firsthand.

I think once the point of no return was reached, it was executed mostly well, but the cause of the switch isn’t as well founded. The pacing here is breakneck on a micro-level, Amana’s mood slams on the breaks going from 100 to 0 after like two scenes, and out of all of Alstro’s other scenarios, the tension between Amana and Chiyuki’s Plove is NEVER addressed—the closest they get is momoiro and at that point Amana’s Plove was being introduced. Their P-SSRs (where the bulk of their Plove content is) operate largely independently of each other too. Again, ABS was particularly good because it had this twisting of the knife as it progressed, and if they were going to borrow anything from ABS, it should have been that. A slower burn would have made Amana’s demeanor even more palpable and authentic, rather than feeling like it’s fiction. Overall, I do think it’s a good read. I know I nitpick a lot but that’s because I think there’s genuinely something of value here, and all the little issues I have with it make it harder for me to wholeheartedly say it’s excellent. Sometimes I feel like I’m too cynical with Amana, especially compared the other (supposed) AmanaPs here. Of course, I think she is exceptionally cute, but much of her appeal personally lies in the tension between the traits she allows to float to the surface and those she stuffs down deep. I don’t think her writing is subversive by any means, but when the cracks show through, it drives home how human she is. The commu in question here is less a rug-pull, but just an honest snapshot of Amana’s entire being.Again, Amana occupies like 60% of my thoughts not because she’s perfect, but because she’s a very flawed person, who naively tries to embody perfection, and I love her for who she is as a whole. I don’t know how better to commit this sentiment to page.Thanks for reading.

The core theme of the project is a reinvention of the ideas and themes for each unit in Shiny Colors. The first unit to release a story is Alstroemeria, with Illumination Stars up next.I'll recap the Alstroemeria story and then give some thoughts towards the end.

Amana and Tenka are informed that Chiyuki has been selected to perform in a serial drama, which is a huge opportunity for her. But producer ends up breaking the news that this job will likely take up a lot of Chiyuki's available attention and time. As a result, the unit will not be able to practice or spend as much time together anymore. They're also informed of the nature of the drama as well, that it will be a darker, more horror-esque drama, and that this may be many people's first experience with Chiyuki. As a result, this could have unexpected effects on the unit's image as well. But ultimately, they decide that they're okay with it, because if Chiyuki really wants to do it then they want to support her. Amana says that no matter what, Chiyuki will always be herself, and that Alstroemeria wouldn't change because of something like this.

In spectacular Tenka fashion, she reassures him that she could use a break and asks him to take his time finding a replacement job for her. Producer lets her, but just reminds her that he doesn't want her getting too lazy during her brief period off. We see as all 3 characters have their own work lives develop apart from one another, similar to what we've seen before in Anchor Bolt Song.Chiyuki is seen talking with Producer, and Amana messages him about her day at work, but he doesn't seem to respond all too quickly. But she's anxious and wants to talk about updates with her work. With Tenka, she struggles to find a game to play because of her backlog and all her newfound free time, so she just does her daily quests like normal. Amana heads to the office to talk to Producer and catches him getting along with Chiyuki. She notices that they're enjoying themselves when she tries to talk to P, and backs out because she doesn't want to interrupt, regretting her decision immediately.

Tenka, realizing that she's the only one, wants to get out of doing the lesson, but Amana doesn't know because Producer hasn't been responding much to her attempts to contact. Tenka presses on this point, asking if they've been talking at all recently, because Tenka feels the same way about how they haven't talked much or how he isn't at the office. Amana says he's just been busy so they shouldn't bother. When Tenka tries to contact him about skipping the lesson, he says she has to go anyways.Chiyuki speaks with an actress who recognizes her and stresses the points that the director made: that she needs to make sure she acts really freely and not be too stiff. She also points out how shocking this new role may be for her fans, but in a positive way. Amana's meeting goes well, and they discuss her social media presence with the new clothing line, except afterwards Amana looks at comments and sees mixed reviews, some people loving it and others wishing they had the old stuff. She starts to contact P but stops herself, remembering how busy he is with Chiyuki. Tenka is doing her lessons alone and struggling, but she and Chiyuki get a small chance to talk. Unfortunately they couldn't catch up at all because Chiyuki needed to be in another lesson room preparing for her role. Tenka remembers how she had to say goodbye to both Amana and Chiyuki that day, likely feeling lonely. Later, she gets home and sees the dollhouse. Recalling their conversation about repairing it, she chooses to leave it where it is because everyone is so busy.

Amana and Tenka are doing Parent-Teacher conferences at school and Amana hands over their mother to Tenka. Amana's reviews were good. Tenka's reviews however are better than expected. Her teacher recognizes how hard she's working with her idol duties, even if it affects her studies. On the flipside, Chiyuki is getting a lot of praise for her acting from the director.Amana reads an interview with Chiyuki and ends up admiring how wonderful Chiyuki is as a person. She starts thinking to herself, about how "one day" she'll get what she's been looking for, but what if that day never comes? Tenka snaps her out of it and Amana tells her that she was admiring the plants, how they seek out the light and grow from it. Tenka draws a parallel between Amana and the plants, calling Amana amazing too.Later at a handshake event, everyone is getting along well with their fans, and Chiyuki is eventually approached by a child. She greets the child and their mother with open arms, but the child is scared of her and runs away. They suspect that this is the result of the recent acting gig she's been doing. Amana meets a fan that loves her old fashion, but wants more of it. Both of them are pretty shaken by what happened, and Chiyuki expresses that she wishes fans could see them for the people they are becoming without letting that affect how they see them.

She's wondering if trying to be her "Alstroemeria" persona will affect her ability to act. Producer rushes to console her, and tells Amana to wait for him at the office, but she catches the two of them together, causing her to spiral, feeling abandoned by him. Producer ends up seeing her and approaches, but she yells at him to stay away, unable to process why she feels the way she does. She ends up heading home, recalling memories of how Producer said he would do his best to support her.Amana gets home and heads straight to her room, which makes Tenka a little sad because she wanted to talk, but worried about her sister. Tenka calls Chiyuki over instead, and they talk a bit, hoping that her presence can help Amana. Tenka asks Chiyuki for help with her homework, but Chiyuki responds saying that Tenka should try thinking on her own before asking others. She frames it as a way that people are depending on her to do this job. Tenka offers food and says that Chiyuki can stay the night if she wants, to which Chiyuki accepts.

Amana lashes out, saying that she's hogging producer all to herself, and that he's been going along with it. Chiyuki apologizes and realizes how bad things have gotten.Tenka steps in to save the day, suggesting they all have some curry together, which she previously offered to both of them. This calms down the girls, and they start apologizing to one another. Chiyuki apologizes for not realizing the circumstances, and Amana apologizes for letting her feelings get the better of her. Tenka tells them that she doesn't blame either of them, because all of them have been busy with their own business. She just wants them all to spend time together.

Amana didn't know about this, but Tenka says she could see many different versions of Chiyuki, even if there are some they don't know yet. Chiyuki then has a realization that she isn't "throwing away" herself, but simply changing.Amana brings up how they used to worry about the same thing and overcome it together, but now, all of their issues are personal and individual. She wonders if they're still Alstroemeria. But she accepts that Alstroemeria can change if they change too, and they all accept that they will continue to be together, even if they change. They get on the topic of producer and their feelings for him, going around talking about how they feel. Soon after they go to sleep.

Chiyuki confides that she's feeling more confident than before, and asks for their permission to continue with her drama role, to which they agree. Tenka says that she's going to do her best with the homework, even if she screws it up, because she accepts that part of her now. Amana talks about wanting to be strong like Tenka and Chiyuki, and break the current version of herself and Alstroemeria, to which Chiyuki responds with fixing the broken Alstroemeria, becoming stronger every time. Each girl expresses what they've learned in their individual work. Chiyuki learns to accept change, Amana stands up for what she believes in, and Tenka puts in the effort to find answers for herself.Chiyuki joins Amana and Tenka in the lesson and they can all finally practice together. Tenka shows them the choreography for the new song, and tells them what she came up with. Tenka shows that she realized that while they used to be one flower, made up of the three of them, now they're 3 individual flowers brought together. They have their own wants, worries, and career paths, but they still want to be together. She sees her hard work thinking about it pay off when the other two girls embrace her, praising her for the answer she gives.They start fixing up the dollhouse and deciding how they want to present it. They think about different aesthetics, but eventually deciding that one part represents who Alstroemeria used to be, and the other represents who they will become. The chapter ends with an echoing of the new theme of alstroemeria, about longing for the future.

There were a lot of good callbacks and flashbacks to previous stories and themes throughout their time. It showed us points from scenarios and produce modes alike. Also there's a point to be made about it being somewhat of a foreshadowing of paracolle.Like Usumomoiro, this was very much an Amana/Chiyuki commu with a side of Tenka, but the moment at the end where she finishes her homework is extremely sweet and it's a good Tenka crying moment, like in her WING. Some of the character arcs feel rehashed, but ultimately I think it was a good usage of them to make a point about the focus of the unit shifting. Also I feel like because of the way Amana was so ruthless with Chiyuki this definitely qualifies as one of the darkest Alst unit stories. Fun fact: in game text doesn't reflect what Amana says during the fight, just what she would *normally* say during a moment like that, creating a weird dichotomy between what you think is happening vs what's actually happening.Ultimately, I think it's a great story and a wonderful start to the Axe8 lineup. I hope they can all be this strong.

It's to the point where I find it actually hard to believe that they're as close as the story tries to say they are. They feel like the least cohesive unit, one that'd benefit more from all going their independent ways than forcefully sticking together because "they love each other." I can't see a benefit to them sticking together. Particularly for Tenka. She could find some place more worthy of her. This is not the best environment for her. She's the least messed up of the three, and could do a lot better elsewhere.
