For example, killing everything including Zalk on the nautiloid gets you xp to level 2 before you land on the beach, whereas simply walking from the gate of Baldur's Gate into the front door of the tavern gives you like 400 xp.The benefit of this system, and why they did it this way, is so that players are not punished for roleplay decisions. If your character wouldn't get sidetracked participating in some refugee grove debate because they're concerned about the tadpole, you miss several hundred xp, so the game drops several hundred xp through just exploration in act 2.So you really can/should just do what your character would do. Don't worry about gamey things.The same goes for items. The best armor in the game is locked behind the evil route, so look forward to that. People who don't know the game very well repeat that the evil route just loses you things but that's not true.There's some messed up stuff in the evil route in this game, but like 70% of players never see it.
