This is a thing I’ve thought a lot about, actually. I’m a big fan of FT1 Single Elimination, so I’d definitely have that as an officially supported format in some for or another. I also like the Japanese team format (which is also usually FT1), so that would likely be how I’d handle that. An important thing to note is that matches are 3/5, so you would have time to adapt to what the opponent is doing. Similar to a game like Virtua Fighter. Of course, to be fair, a mistake made in round 1 can carry over to round 2, such as spending too much meter and having nothing left for a Guard Cancel. Though I suppose that’s something you’d figure out from studying the habits of other players and just playing a lot of matches. With that said, whenever I see those longer endurance formats, I just don’t find them as interesting as staking everything on one chance. This is part of why Tougeki was such a big deal and good for spectators. The drops actually mattered since you couldn’t just do a character switch. Especially since the matches could be extremely volatile at high level, depending on the game. A good example of this is the one they did for KOF98 where Xiaohai won. He was playing under extreme pressure and came back at the last minute with Orochi Chris more than once. I understand that some people have reservations about FT1, but I think that the format encourages extremely precise play and minimizing your errors.There’s still a lot of work that must be done, however, so this is all just a plan for the future. Though I actually have many plans in regards to how ranks work, how and where tournaments would be, location tests, prize support, and so on. One of my more “off the wall” ideas was a “random select” tournament that basically served as the equivalent of a TCG Draft where you just use whatever you’re handed and play around that, having this as an officially supported format to see the range of knowledge that players have. Not as the primary format, of course.
