Are (you) prepared?

I understand wanting to make your stealth game character blend in and look unassuming, but you've gotta suspend reality. The protagonist of the game has to be memorable in some way. I'm not saying put him in a clown costume (though that would be a funny unlock/easter egg) but maybe do something to differentiate him from the background of the game. Unless it's first person, then I guess nobody really cares what the protag looks like.

I think my chicuela idea would be better as a map painting game where you're the Shota and have to basically conquer the 512 chicuelas in the map.

Maybe making it like a shogi game where the chicuelas live their lives walking between points that symbolize harem anime settihngs like school or mall.

Maybe the map painting mechanics are like the order which you conquer the waifus, and the roguelike 2D rpg town is the battle map, which would be like DF adventure mode or powder.

QoL is a self-defeating spiral, because it creates a baseline of hand-holding which retards players and then you have to keep making more which retards them worse.

you cannot really talk about QoL in the context for old ass games because these games, relatively to what a modern game is, were laughably simple and dumb, they couldn't get any more trivial mechanically

More running to the finish line. Yet another hurdle
>stuff i set up here does not actually update the necessary data, it's just visuals to create the illusion of a functioning game
>just sat there frustrated not being sure what to do to get the data working as needed
>open up a note on my phone and start solidifying the process by which to achieve this
-________- there is no more avoiding it, a lot of the work now is setting up the game to be truly playable by others. Is this why I've been more anxious recently? Last night was the second night where iirc I kinda just laid there feeling like I couldn't sleep, I did eventually fall asleep. It's not like the game is done or even close to done. If all the necessary code is in I still have all the art needed for it and that should take quite a while. Or maybe it's because for once I finally have a game that is feasible to get from start to finish in a reasonable amount of time? Or maybe it's because this game has huge GMI energy? Or maybe it's because time is of the essence and I need to work fast on releasing this game for fear of someone else making the same idea and beating me to release? Feels like this is it, once this game is done and releases, I will finally be free of ever re-entering the wagecage. Yet it feels heavy on me, idk why.

I'm making a game in sdl3 and Zig, very early stages obviously, picrel is just for visual interest, but my vision is for it to be similar to Pokemon but with customizable robotic characters and a better combat system (at least in a single player context, I've heard Pokemon PvP can be fun if you spend enough time learning it).
Anyway, I've been thinking about how specifically to store level data and I was wondering how everyone felt about self-contained levels similar to WADs? I'd add the ability to reference a set of core assets so that the game's file size is still minimal of course, but I think it would be really cool if everything was mostly self contained and could be easily extended/altered by the end user.
I think it'd also make things easier to manage since theoretically you could just allocate everything inside of it via an arena and free it when you're done, but I suppose that isn't necessarily dependent on organizing levels this way (it would probably make it easier to do so though, in my entirely uninformed opinion).

>>579470646
I would recommend making a couple of levels first by hardcoding a bunch of shit directly in your source code before deciding on a file format and structure. It makes it easier to add new stuff to your levels because you don't have the entire overhead of your file format to manage. Also as soon as you start making external files for your levels you'll make a detour into writing a level editor for it and you'll have double the work every time you want to alter it, once on parsing and once on writing to file.

A problem RPGs have is a lot of your data is incredibly incestuous in that your level might seem standalone but it probably has enemies in it so it has to reference your enemy tables and your enemies have skills they use which are in their own section and they drop items that are also their own section. But then your items might have bonuses against certain enemies or alter the way certain skills work or abilities that require you to be standing on certain kinds of terrain and all of a sudden the stuff you tried to partition away into its own files have circular dependencies between them. And then you decide that you're autistic and you want to add an enemy in between enemy 6 and enemy 7 because you care about the order of that stuff and now you're stuck shifting IDs around and you end up needing to modify 17 different files to keep everything internally consistent.

Focus on making a level or two first and then worry about how to store them later.

But nothing more than indoctrination, the so called faction, of that nation, controled by the semites, which are nothing but mites upon gamers.

AAA cucks have forgotten, what it meant to gotten all the coins and jumps and shoots, which they offshoot into a lame imitation of the creation of 1980 masters.

What a fool they must be, to consume media, that is nothing but an encyclopedia of horros beyond our comprehension.

That sounds like a good idea. I will say that I've already started writing a primitive parser for a tilemap format that I found online (Tiled's .tmx), mostly because doing everything required via hard coding seemed like it would get unmanageable very quickly, and Tiled should theoretically act as a pseudo-level-editor. I think once I have a way to load levels from that format I might just hardcode the rest on top until I work out all it will need.
The pic I posted earlier is actually the result of hooking that parser up to my current tile drawing code without adding any functionality for it to tell what tile it should draw, so on the bright side it shouldn't be too long of a process.
I hadn't considered how interconnected an RPG's codebase is likely to be, that is a very good point.

Well it seems I stopped caring enough.
>make the code super well done and easy to follow?
>just put it together and release the game before the spaghetti falls apart
I've veered off to the second category. Like why make it super great if the moment it's done I never have to update it again. Maybe bugs here and there or DLC but unironically why not do this? Idk how long it would take me to make it nice and clean. But the trouble of having to do some of the setup manually is a lot quicker than sitting here thinking up the perfect solution...actually I just had an idea....hmm but do I want to implement it and will it be quick? Kinda don't feel like thinking about it and just going full steam ahead, maybe when I'm in bed I'll think about it.

59 days left until I permanently run out of money. My game won't be done by then and even if it were, I'm not giving it more than a 10% chance of making even $2000. It's too late to make anything else except look for a job, probably in a warehouse. I don't know, I've never had to look for a job.

It's those details that are very simple to implement, like NPC dialogues, dialogues reacting to special moves, fleeing from the main character, showing emotions, reacting to seeing their dead friends, having steering behaviors, doing super powerful but slow attacks. I imagine that if you can use them to model the player demographic behavior to some degree of accuracy it would be useful for balancing, but for broader design choices I think anything other than real humans won't do.

what if a hypothetical gamedev had 3 gfs? would he release the ultimate game?
>>
>>579505293
Personally, I would underperform with 3 due to the wobbly table paradox.
>>
>>579505293
I think at 2 you start hitting severely diminishing returns unless you could have them help with your game somehow in a more direct way. but I've never had 3 girlfriends unless you count situationships (and two of them dumped me in a couple of weeks and I wasn't even a gamedev then) so maybe someone can experiment and let us know?
>>
>>579505452
so 4 is where its at? I knew a guy who had 5 gfs at one point (he was a neet so he had a lot of free time)
>>
>>579505508
On the contrary. I think 3 people (dev+2 cute gfs) make the game development stable, like a 3-legged table. But 4 people can make it wobbly like a 4-legged table (that thing about 3 vertices making 1 plane and 4 vertices being able to make 2 planes).

i think video games have a really fucked problem.

I've got a Godot architecture question for you guys.
I'm working on an RPG in Godot that will have a fair amount of enemies. I've been storing them all as .tres files with their names, stats, moves, visuals, whatever associated data. Would it make more sense to have some big object with all their information where I can look it up with a Dictionary based on an ID/key per enemy? Not exactly sure which is more efficient or if this matters at all, but I've seen references to "enemy tables", "dialogue tables", etc stored as .csv files in different posts and guides about RPG development.
>>
>>579507427
>I didn't know how bad it sounded. nobody said anything about the sound! over 200 people played it!
it probably doesn't matter then, but it's important for the level of fidelity/quality to be consistent. it will become noticeable if something sounds/looks better than everything else, so either use some shittier sound effects or improve them all

would it be foolish to assume a major hurdle for indie game sales is the length of time a game is designed to be played for in a single session
in this attention economy it's difficult to acquire more than 5 minutes of attention from the average consumer
some of us are making games intended for 3+ hour sessions of full immersion with zero distractions
even if your game is good, it's hard to believe you'll find enough people in this brainrotted era who are willing to engage with this experience for you to make decent sales
just a thought, consider it if you will
>>
>>579512434
low attention span is an absolute myth. just because your product is shit and people have better options doesn't mean they have a low attention span. people play games for 8+ hours without a break, even singleplayer games.

even really skilled people can't make everything alone. even writing a ui framework can take years.
even if you are the most professional 3d modeller and animator in the game, you still couldn't make a game alone cause it's too much work.
collaboration is key and collaboration also means using software, using tutorials, using plugins, using assets etc. etc.

history proved that people willing to collaborate have massively better chances of survival.

Enjoying niche games is a bad feeling. Few people enjoy what you enjoy. The games you want to play are rare. The games you want to make are doomed to receive seemingly unjust but fully logical criticism. You lack the mental fluidity to make something with greater "general appeal". It feels like a march to inevitable doom. Walking into failure, because you are simply an inherently odd being. Bad feeling.

I think what you’re describing is a particularly painful version of the indie-dev problem: your taste is narrower than the market, and your own taste is the thing you most naturally know how to create.

That can make the future feel almost mathematically predetermined.

You might indeed make games that never earn enough to live on. That's a real possibility. But “I have unusual taste” doesn't establish that conclusion.

You probably don't need to become more “normal.” You may need to become unusually good at the other half of the job: finding the people who are already strange in exactly the same direction as you, and making it extremely easy for them to recognize that your game is for them.

The goal isn't necessarily to make a game that everyone wants.

It might be to make the game where 2,000 people think:

“Wait. Someone made this specifically for me?”

Those people are much more valuable to a niche creator than 200,000 mildly interested people.
>>
>first person shooter shooter

genuinely yanderedevs game i don't even know the name of looks like boring ass garbage but for some reason it still gained enough attention to become an internet meme
meanwhile you probably show your game to zero people and act surprised when it fails lmao
just learn marketing genuinely that's all it takes is a few months of honest effort and you'll figure out how to find audiences and communicate your game to them
don't be lazy just accept the amount of time it'll take to do this scales near exponentially with how niche your game is
yeah some slop made for retarded 8 year olds can blow up over night if a big youtuber plays it but who cares, just be patient, you can't make that garbage anyways so give up, keep making your niche shit and accept it might take years of honest effort to build up the audience you'll need
>>
>>579513293
It all depends how old you are, how much time you have. If you're like 14 and have a ton of time, sure, go balls deep writing your own engine, learn a lot, become a serious developer if that's your dream. If you're like 29, then just make a game using the best tools for the job. At some point you must transition from being full of potential, to execution. That's something our culture doesnt' do well, understanding that at some point it's not about learning, it's about executing, producing.

It also depends on goals. I don't personally want to be a top tier dev, I want to make great games. There's overlap to some extent, but I'd rather achieve that goal by running a business well. Get the business going by making low
cost games and hopefully build momentum and eventually just hire software engineers for more and more aggressive games.

Not bad for some discussions though they tend to be unrealistically optimistic.
IndieDev also has some posters who are making apps/websites/other software, and gamedev has a lot of AAA devs posting about their jobs. gamedev is better for me since it's more relevant to what I'd want to read.
Both are still insanely swamped by a billion "how do I start" posts and not gatekept enough.
Don't ever try to advertise your games there, it's the wrong audience and also it will get drowned out by the noise.
I've seen some pretty cool tech demos/guides though, and shared a few of my own that got some traction and people found helpful.
That being said, I stopped using Reddit a long time ago.

Advertising on Reddit in general through just posting never works. Any subreddit that doesn't explicitly ban self promotion gets swamped by so many posts that you'll just get drowned out in the noise.

The "playable slice" of my game at this point is so small I'm not sure it's even worth submitting. It's supposed to be an RPG but all I really have is a rudimentary battle system so far. I could submit a few test battles so I can get feedback on the mechanics, since it's a little different than typical RPG battles, but I don't know if that's even worth it yet.
>>
>>579521359
I think if you can make a demo that focuses on just testing the battle system provided it accurately reflects the core system then it would be good idea to get some feedback early on based on the MVP before you go deep with the full implementation. It really depends how much of the actual final system is implemented though.

One of my favorite things about certain ROTK games is that they treat you like an average Joe. If you're a subordinate officer, you're only in charge of your own unit in battle, whereas a ruler has full control of their units. I included that feature here, and I'm having a lot of fun working with my AI-controlled comrades and following their battle plan rather than having full control over my forces. I also think this sort of gameplay divide is a great way to let new players get their feet wet without being overwhelmed.
Thanks for reading my plog (my progress blog.)

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms series is a long-running grand strategy and tactical role-playing game franchise developed by Koei (now Koei Tecmo), originating in 1985. The games are based on the classic Chinese novel and historical records, featuring turn-based management of cities, armies, and generals during the Three Kingdoms era of Chinese history.
Series Overview and Releases
The franchise has produced fourteen main numbered installments, with the latest being Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV, released on January 16, 2020. The series distinguishes between two primary gameplay styles:

Ruler Play: Managing a faction’s economy, diplomacy, and armies from a strategic map (e.g., RTK XI, RTK XIV).
Officer Play: Controlling a single character’s journey, battles, and relationships (e.g., RTK VII, RTK VIII, RTK XIII).

There are several addons for a nice Resource database view (e.g. YARD). Without any addons, you can also write a custom ResourceFormatLoader with a custom extension, and then scan your directory for that extension to compile a dictionary of references to that resource type. Alternatively, if you just keep all the resources of that type under the same directory, you can just scan that directory.

Right now it's just a directory called "enemies" with a subfolder for each distinct enemy and a generic folder that contains moves/abilities/AI behavior common to multiple enemies.
This system has worked so far but it could get annoying to manage pretty quickly. I'll look into YARD, I haven't heard of that.
But basically every character including enemies has a "definition" object that stores all the data that make them up (stats, moves, AI, visuals, etc)

Yes.

It's a false equivalency. If I developed a game and it flopped that would be more like developing a functional, flying helicopter but being unable to sell it for whatever reason. You still need to market that helicopter, and convince people to use it over what they currently use. Failing to do that is failing at the business level, and still a huge disappointment. You still made a helicopter though.

It's not a false equivalency. Any aircraft that is capable of reliable and consistent aerial transportation is guaranteed to make significant revenue and any game that is capable of attracting and holding players' attention can is guaranteed to make significant revenue. Cargo cultists see a spinning propeller and conclude they have a functional product even though when they put it to any real test, the aircraft doesn't fly. Marketing isn't going to save a bad game that no one wants to play.

Planes are a physical good with a ton of precision machined parts that you must guarantee to be reliable, especially for commercial, passenger, or military use.
Factor in the labor of engineers and technicians too.
A commercial plane costs hundreds of millions of dollars to manufacture. That's just for one plane. I just looked this up and found a few sources so I'm not just pulling this out of my ass.
Even if you did make a plane, you'd have to market it and sell it too, which you're dismissing as trivial.
You make your indie game once and spend at most a few thousand bucks on it, and then you can sell infinite copies.
I could go on and on if you're not convinced.
Passenger and cargo transport is a necessary part of the economy and games are a luxury good.
People will waste money on a game even if it looks bad, because at worst it crashes and they leave a bad review. If a plane crashes, that's a much bigger problem for obvious reasons.
Regardless, plenty of plane manufacturers have gone out of business because the revenue wasn't guaranteed even though their planes worked.
After having written all of this I realize you're probably just baiting, or just really wanted an excuse to post those videos (which are admittedly pretty funny) so I guess you got me in the end.

There are planes other than commercial jet liners. You can get a reasonable fixed wing or helicopter suitable for a taxi, tourism (e.g. skydiving or boar hunting), or crop dusting business for $400k-800k.

I'm not baiting. I don't think you (and most other flop retards here) understand just how complicated video games really are. Lives may not be at stake when your video game crashes or fails to take off, but that doesn't mean they are any less complicated than airplanes.

Also, I haven't played music in a really long time. Think I want to use FL Studio 12 but if anyone has any other recommendations that are at least a one time purchase and not a subscription I'd be interested in making music like this for the game, I almost edited some waveloops using my Surface Poo but it's dying and I don't know how to transfer FL studio 12 from computer to computer
Is that even possible? Pirate Bay is too sketch to use with my gamedev laptop

It's such a weird thing that's happening right now. On one hand, I feel bad for luddite devs because what they take weeks to implement through sweat and tears AI can do in a couple days tops. On the other hand, the vibecode bros don't know shit about directing and designing games, so the slop is completely soulless and doesn't really play good. I think the most powerful person on earth right now in the gamedev scene is somebody who has already a lot of game design experience, great vision, great attention to detail and interleaves development with AI. Work on your game yourself, use AI to speed up through the boring and tedious parts etc.

People who use AI and know how to make games apparently don't know how to make games since they use AI to make the game for them.
>>
>>579568346
Assuming money isn't an issue, AI is still worse than asset stores and Fiverr. If you couldn't make a game before with assets and Fiverr, then you're not making a game now with the help of AI.

I'm pretty close to a demo day entry now. I'll try to improve the cpu movements a little (they are too defensive now) or add a final kick/punch.
The entry will be quite bare bones. There's only a few moves and the UI is mostly placeholder but its *playable*.
I've added the scoring system which mimics competitive karate a little. The Cpu can make use of the dash fwd/bwd and they'll attempt to avoid oncoming strikes.
After the demo the UI will have an overhaul, I want to create a trainer / referee character and add another game mode.

I just discovered that there's diferent fundamental layers to a song.

>Main Melody
>Counter Melody
>Bass
>Arpeggios
>Ear candy
>Pads
>Drum kit

Each layer has diferent instruments that only work with that layer.
And each layer has a bunch of motifs that only work with the same layer.

A rising drum like pattern only works with plucking instruments and can only work as bass or ear candy.
A ladder motif or a hook, only works with woodwinds, flutes, brass, piano and can only work for counter melody or main melody at half and quarter notes with some fast eight note arpegios syllabes.

Counter melody is a response half phrase to the main melody.

Drum kit layer can be used as ear candy riffs or to give variation to a repetition of a section.

Pads require chords but they can be done as a ladder chord or piano or bass stacatto or drone.

interesting, the wall scrolls and benches react the moment of the loss, not the moment of the impact of the body on the floor. if intentional, that might be giving the hit some extra impact while there are no vfx, but it was odd enough to me that I had to go back and check the timing.

The value range is quite small. I tried editing it, exaggerated the range, and then compared it to some other games. also the chromatic aberration? is not helping, there is this sense that my eyes are out of focus. The contra rogue corps image I have here has low range too, but all in the bright range, making it look quite flat.
