But it's not really required. The game gives you enough exposition and context to know what you need to know. But you'll miss out on some revelations and lore that builds on stuff in the earlier games. But again, that's only if you're an autistic lorefag. It's a perfectly functional standalone save-the-world-but-with-a-few-surprise-twists narrative. But again, you'll appreciate it more if you played the earlier games.
