System mechanics aren't inherently bad and the way the different characters interact with them is a source of manageable complexity that can be interesting and add depth to the game. The problem happens when you go too far like in this current fighter gen to the point where the game gets utterly flattened by dominant system mechanics that make everyone else play the same. This has been the case for basically every current day fighter because it has the "advantage" of making characters very easy to switch around, because all you really need to do is master the system mechanics.
