Nobody's a must have, you can pretty much solo the entire game with Byleth alone. For reference, the best units are Petra, Ferdinand, Felix, and Lysithea. You can do whatever with them they always turn out great. Also the best class is wyvern lord, if you have a squishie who keeps dying or can't hit hard, put them on this path.
