It might be cheaper for Autumn to go 2.5D for the sequel. They could still present the game as hand-drawn 2D-looking, but it would actually be 3D, similar to games like Guilty Gear Strive or Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising. It could still look like Skullgirls, but it would be easier and cheaper to work with (in the long run) and they could even 'port' the same exact frames so that you wouldn't be able to tell. It would also have better performance (lower texture resolution for the cel-shaded look), and they could even add stuff like costumes or variable facial expressions and animated dialogue (Something not possible to do with hand-drawn sprites without a ton of work redrawing them).

"That wasn't very nice."The bodyguard dropped the rifle and ran away, but the skull wisp chased him through the penthouse. He vaulted a sofa, and the wisp passed through it. He ducked behind a marble bar, but the wisp was already on the other side. Finally, he screamed and dashed for the elevator. The skull followed him in and the doors closed.DING!Lorenzo stared as the doors opened again, and a single red balloon floated out, with a tiny pair of shoes dangling beneath it.Marie giggled. "Oh, that one was funny."Marie gently blew on the balloon and it sailed away over New Meridian.Then her smile faded as she looked back at Lorenzo, who was standing there frozen."Oh, you're still here? Good."
