An interesting blend of two character designs. A somewhat uplifting moment in a world that has seen the horror of garbage Chinese games where not just the character names are straight from the asylum (Gonglong, Dingling and whatever) but that feature an engine, optics and character design apparently meant for the absolute dregs of humanity. Recently, a colleague of mine told me she’s glad of how old she is, and I have to agree. Not sure how I feel about Renne these days.It feels like after the trauma of characters are solved, a lot of them just become boring. When Estelle showed up in Cold Steel I sort of felt the same they all just morph into these sort of generically nice people. Renne has a sort of smugness to her I guess but that's about it. It's rough for a series in which the newer games mostly consist of "beloved character shows up and audience is meant to pog", when they don't actually write good dialogue or interesting characterizations. I can't say it's super amazing because after a point it becomes way too easy, but there is a real satisfaction to sitting there figuring out the right orbs. CP is also a fun concept as well to me. The loop is satisfying.Lastly, the overarching lore that connects all the stories together, that is another huge draw. You want to know what characters will show up there, how things are connected. I think one of the biggest draws for me is gathering as much information about Ouroboros as I can.

For all my lengthy critiques about Kuro II, there is one incredibly obvious thing that I missed, which is immediately evident upon a few hours of Kai .. the writing sucks! There is no personality or joy in any of it. This is something that is much harder to articulate but instantly I can feel it while playing Kai the shift for the better.I think that Cold Steel was pretty awful writing, Kuro I was amazing to me because I said oh shit this feels like the older games in regards to how much personality is in the writing.
