I liked my play in this game because I went for the active option. Usually it's my bad habit of talking myself out of things when I see my opponent's defenses that prevent me from winning material. Not considering how active a position I will get!! So I thought of g4 and saw ...Be6, I play Re1 threatening and he can defend, BUT I played it anyway, and it was correct.Sometimes you just have to go with your gut. My opponent made the conversion easy as hell by playing ...Qf6 and giving me Ne4 with tempo but oh well.

Started playing the Hungarian Defense with great results lately because online chess amateurs love to think they’re temporarily embarrassed Mikhail Tals and will just sac and mate you. I’ve realized just playing “drawish” solid openings and letting them self-implode is the best winning strategy. Almost every game is like that, they come out throwing all their pieces neglecting position, inevitably sac, I calmly solidify my position and then press the material advantage while they shuffle and squirm. In the rare case I play a fellow positional intellectual it just goes to a clean endgame where I’m comfortable trying to Magnus them as well. Once I’m 2000-2100 (currently 1900 lichess) I’ll probably have to try more fighting openings again though. I’m not going to be better at endgames than people who have been playing their whole lives and will have to go back to trying to win any way I can.

That also means there’s more room for improvisation and the games are less “forced”. So weaker players will feel uncomfortable having to actually play for themselves and calculate more than one move ahead.

It’s crazy how much better I play when I’m in form.
