When wrote my Dissonance review, I did so with three beliefs in mind.One - Dissonance was heavily inspired by Lessons in Love (as stated by the author, no assumption here)Two - Those reading the review would largely be LiL fans interested in knowing if Dissonance was also worth reading Three - A good practice in reviewing is to compare games to ground one's argument, e.g. if you call something bad provide an example of something good, if you call something especially good provide an example of something badAll three of these things combined in such a way it made total sense to compare Dissonance to LiL. Here was a very similar game inspired by LiL failing in ways I thought LiL succeeded in. Those coming from LiL would immediately understand where I'm coming from, e.g. when I say "mental health is not presented well here" then describe how LiL depicts mental health better. And that would be that.What I did NOT have a belief in was that a random Spanish guy would have an immense beef with all conceivable criticism for Dissonance and hound me over it for going on months now, while an anti-LiL faction would sprout up in /vn/ and like support him as the American government might support rebel factions in Cuba in hopes of assassinating Castro. It's pretty obvious that comparing Dissonance to LiL would come off poorly in such an environment where the main throughline is hostility and tribal warfare. For example, there's a game called Water is my Daughter which is a remake of DQ5; you could say it is a literal DQ5 clone inspired by DQ5. But when reviewing Waterdaughter I would largely avoid comparisons even though they would be enlightening, because it would embitter all the DQ5 fans and the point would be lost in tribal warfare. My error with Dissonance was that I perceived there would be no tribal warfare because everyone would understand the LiLclone dynamic.I don't really regret the review but it is funny to see how absurd the internet can blow things up.
