I've replayed chapter once or twice, it's definitely a "sequel to chapter 1" type chapter but it did so much right in terms of setting up characters and establishing lore and expanding the world, and the gameplay and optional content makes it feel really fresh. All of them but Flowery are basic flat characters with nothing going for them besides 1 or 2 running gags, yet they take up 90% of the chapter. And in the end none of it will matter because they won’t appear in later chapters. Dedicating chapter 5 out of 7 to 6 brand new side character with no bearing on the plot is a genius move.The whole idea of a “silly sidequest before things get real” is stupid. Who the fuck likes it when a book/movie/show goes on a random detour right as things get interesting? Nobody. My problem with DessKnight is that it has very little basis for a meaningful narrative that grabs all the elements that the game has been putting in front of the player. It's trying to come up with a solution that is as 'clean' as possible and requires the fewest steps, the 'Occam's Razor' answer. But that's not how Toby wrote Undertale or has written Deltarune so far. It has mattered much moreso that you feel personally invested in the outcomes of characters you keep meeting and speaking with like Flowey in UT.Even before you met Asriel you kept running into Flowey and having conversations with him.Whereas you don't know Dess, and you don't know the Roaring Knight. Between them, they have one confirmed line that doesn't even appear in the game. And Susie and Ralsei have NO history with Dess. We are over 25 hours into this game. Deltarune's length and complexity have lapped Undertale four times over, and in that time, Dess has been mentioned slightly more times than Pizzarina, a character who doesn't even exist. This is just not a story about Dess. It's a story about Kris, Susie, Ralsei, and Noelle. Three prophesied heroes, and something else.
