the mendoza line is 1.7 PPG across 2 cup cycles.if you only play in 1 cup then it's simply not enough information, in my opinion.but 1.7 PPG means you average 5 points in the group stage which, barring crazy results like a 6-6-6-0 or any other memes results, it likely means you are qualifying for KOs. the unfortunate thing is that PPG fails to really understand the KOs format as there is only Win/Loss. without introducing something to look at wins in extra time/penalties as a lower 'point' value (ie 2 points for win in extra/penalties 1 point for a loss in those situations) you are artificially inflating the PPG of people who continue through the KOsbut what about efficiency you might say? this metric just ignores draws. draws are a fairly crucial part of the group stage, as a player who gets 7 points is not the same as a player who gets 6. one is undefeated, the other has a loss to another team. but they have in this moment the same efficiency, and could even both be in the same group. as a result i think using PPG as the metric is the most accurate thing to look at for now. the complications of older cups having fewer matches in total, hells wild card for 2nd place teams, etc really makes it difficult to do something uniform across time, so i think the safest thing to do is to be like "if you are above 1.7 PPG you are a good manager, and if you are above 2.0 PPG you are a great manager"

>>581107931it's just inaccurate. winning on penalties or in extra time is just not the same as winning in regular time. penalties even more so as it's almost completely random. they're much closer in value to a draw than a win due to the fact that your opponent held you out past regulation and, in the case of penalties, took you to the coinflip. it's somewhat just not fair to your opponent that they come out with 0 points and you take 3.
