The whole point of the questline was you put him to rest, you lay the ring on his grave, and he gives you the sword because he no longer needs it. now instead you take his sentimental ring because... casters feel left out? The fact that quests gave asymmetrical rewards was what made some stand out and is why so many classic quest rewards are remembered to this day whereas you could have a gun to your head and still name zero retail quest rewards
