The only places where you need meta units are high tier autism modes and Depths of Myth though arguably the latter is more of a unit count check this time around since you need 4 but you don't really need to complete it.

If you're super early into the game where you're still running mostly 4-5*s then it's perfectly fine to use some of the generic fodder chubes as you can always feed them to the better ones later on. Alternatively would be getting a dedicated chube of a character you know you'll end up getting soon and just using that as a stat stick in the meantime.
