Holy fucking kino.. Kichikuou Rance is one of the best VNs I ever played. Starting Rance in release order was really fun and the payoff was huge in KR, it's unbelievable how good it was the entire time. The mechanics in earlier games suck but KR felt really polished and it was great all the way. There is still so much stuff I haven't seen even though I got the good ending with Sill, so I'll be playing it every now and then when I feel like it. I don't know, it was just too good and definitely the best VN I finished this year.

In the prologue, the tonal difference and Renji and Eiji talking past another is quite "literary" in how it isolates Eiji from the well-intentioned persons surrounding him, yet leaves room to show his genuine efforts to do the right thing given his upbringing. I guess Eiji is a character where a bit more vernacular slang could work for once, but there is no way that fully automatic MTL can capture the subtle ambiguos and ironic dialogue, the alienation and brewing conflict between the brothers, the shadows of the past, the gamer lore, let alone the "twist."

What is the best and worst visual novel you have ever read and why?Starting with me, my personal favorite visual novel is Fullmetal Demon Muramasa. This work is so great in so many aspects.Firstly, the prologue had me hooked like no piece of fiction ever had which had me invested instantly.The characters are well written and the interactions are really enjoyable to read.The worldbuilding with all the different fractions and their goals are well thoughout and add tension to the later conflicts.The best part is how it engages the reader into the moral dilemmas and asks "Who is right and wrong here?".

I normally play otome or BL since I like games that are geared toward a female audience, but occasionally I'll play a VN written more for a male audience. I'd say of all genre of VN, Muramasa is easily in my top 5 best ever, perhaps even #1. Our protagonist Minato Kageaki is a great character to follow along with, and the rest of the story and game's presentation is truly amazing. ok honestly Kageaki is soooo hot. I actually really enjoyed all the sexy, serious, action and joke scenes of this game. It was fun to replay earlier routes too, and get an even better understanding of events and the how and why things play out differently. Every choice, every timeline is very well thought-out by the writers. also did I mention Kageaki is like so hot?? especially when he's at the sunny beach in full uniform! steaming!!

Obviously, it's not saying "don't defend yourself," it is merely identifying that killing should not be treated lightly even then.

Again, this sounds "obvious" when put out in words, but historically people are very eager to simplify murder and paint it as righteous even when in very light cases, not only the extreme home invader knife situation. See also incidents on the road where people shoot others in perceived self-defense when the other person is just trying to get insurance details or something like that. People too quickly treat murder too lightly while not even viewing others as humans at the slightest inconvenience. That's the problem, not self-defense.This isn't to say you should like Muramasa or that it isn't preachy, but you're pattern matching generic and bad themes when the reality is Muramasa is going after something deeper and truer to life.
