Here's the actual problem:We know from the dev interview that Eshmel did not exist for most of the game's development. That means that all of these characters were written with canon love interests and attractions because there was no avatar.When you introduce an avatar, if you want them to be able to fuck everyone, you'd either have to go and rewrite the entire game or leave it and not have S supports.They tried to have their cake and eat it too, (ie don't rewrite the story and characters AND also add an avatar) but that means the Avatar is now competing with characters that already had canon romances in mind.

Robin worked because they were interweaved well into both the plot as a whole and the lord's character arc plotline, and being the deuteragonist to the lord instead of the lord themselves allowed them to have a neutral persona which lent itself well to self inserting (and also stopped them making stupid decisions courtesy of FE's writing). And they allowed players to mate with whoever they wanted to. Corrin didn't work because they were explicitly the protag - them needing both a personality and to make decisions to keep the plot rolling completely broke the self insert illusion and made them go over like a wet balloon, so much so that having free reign to mate with anyone couldn't save them. Byleth worked because we went back to to Robin formula of being good for self inserting and being very important to each lords arc while letting the lord run the show. Plus they could mate with whoever the player wants. Cuckbird absolutely doesn't work because not only are they barely in the game, they don't have a relationship with the lords like Robin/Byleth does AND can't mate with anyone.
