Somebody ported afmf to linux right after I posted that comment. Did a /lgg/ user make this? https://github.com/serialexperimentslainnnn/afmf-linux
>>
i think an anon in a linux gaming thread last night was asking about this game. cachy-proton didn't work (hasn't been updated in 2-3 months, illusion has better anti-piracy detection against goldberg emu now or something). proton ge 11-7 and dw worked.

It's my first time playing minecraft. Can somebody explain what this thing is?
>>

Whoa, neat. Gave it a go in crossworlds and it looks pretty good and didn't feel any different. I don't have my glasses on though lmao...
>>
>>581534310
Unfortunately it's limited to 2x framegen unlike lossless scaling (lsfg-vk) which allows you to set any framegen amount you want. But it's still a very new project so he may add support for that. I dont know if afmf on windows allows more than 2x framegen.
>>
>>581534494
Yeah, but that works out for that game since it's locked at 60 FPS and I run my monitor at 120.
>>
nvm now I'm seeing artifacts out the ass I hate framegen!!
>>
>>
>>581535715
I runs in performance mode if you run a game at 2560x1440 resolution or higher. You have to set AFMF_PERFORMANCE_MODE=quality for better quality.
>>
Well that wasn't worth it.

I must say, aside from the nice background with the view of Earth, his is not the most aesthetically pleasing level. Episode Two is off to a dull start.

I'm not sure what's going on with that project so I'll just stick with proton experimental for most things, it pretty much just werks anyway
>>
For me it's Valve's latest numbered Proton version.
>>

anyway, my question is, why does steam block me from using my gamepad outside of steam(e.g in ubisoft connect) games?

You should use the forks anyway. I don't see a good reason to prefer mainline proton over the popular forks
>>
That was a close one.
>>
>>581591724
I'm not him, but for a Steam user, the obvious reason is just being able to play games with zero extra steps. Because using anything other than the Proton included with Steam requires more steps than
>install Steam
>select game
>click Install
>click Play
no matter how seamless you make the extra third-party program that manages Proton GE versions or whatever.
Not that I personally mind a bit of tinkering (and frankly I'd just go back to Windows if I did), but the average gamer has already started typing "okay I'll just use Windows" by the time they read the part where you have to restart Steam after installing a compatibility tool.
>>
FUUUUUUUCK this level, I'm so glad I finished it. I wanted to Alt+F4 this shit last night, but saving is available only between levels, so I knew I'd have to start the level over again if I didn't get to the end. And if I had to play this level again, I'd probably just never play the game again.
The game wouldn't be so bad if the scrolling were smooth. This is headache-inducing in some cases.
>>
These helicopters look pretty cool, so I wish they were actually fun to fight. But instead of shooting projectiles to be dodged or something, they just fly into the player and never fuck off.

It seems I'm out of videos to post, so enjoy the new cropped-box-art icons I made for Duke Nukem 1 and 2 after realizing the default icons clashed with the rest of my old-game shortcuts in the screenshot I posted in >>>/v/748025676.
At some point I was doing this only for games that had shitty-looking icons but now it's a theme. I probably won't do the whole right-hand side of my desktop though.

>play Wo Long 2 demo for the reward for the full release

welp, gonna wait a few days and see if Valve are gonna fix it
and it's a linux specific problem, it doesn't happen on windows according to people on the steam forums
>>
>>581604415
>crashing on a menu
Assuming it's not on purpose (because you didn't say anti-cheat (never heard of that game though)), what do developers even do in their spaghetti-ass code to make games shit the bed like this? Countless games just work with Wine/Proton, so it's not as if it's just a case of "Linux bad".
>>
>>581606179
The game is from Koei Tecmo, of Ninja Gaiden, Dynasty Warriors, Dead or Alive, Nioh, Stranger of Paradise fame.
I'm sure it's a Linux(Proton) issue, because it is the same engine they've been using since the first Nioh, and all games by it had no issues on Linux, except the performance issues in Rise Of The Ronin, Nioh 3 and now Wo Long 2 because the dogshit engine can't handle open world shit.

>ability to open steam:// URLs with xdg-open is suddenly broken
>Cartridges can't launch my Steam games anymore
What the fuck broke this? I'm not updating all of them to do
>steam steam://rungameid/...
instead of
>xdg-open steam://rungameid/...
because that's too tedious. I can bulk edit the JSONs now but I don't want to have extra things to do after importing games.
Steam's desktop entry still has this in it:
>MimeType=x-scheme-handler/steam;x-scheme-handler/steamlink;
>>
>>581719529
I asked an LLM (forgive me but abominable intelligence is good at summarizing text so it's easier than scrolling through irrelevant search results to find the relevant ones), and after a few rounds of giving it more information to get past suggestions that weren't going to help, it told me to run
>gio mime x-scheme-handler/steam steam.desktop
>gio mime x-scheme-handler/steamlink steam.desktop
which fixed the issue. I still want to know what the fuck broke this. I almost never have things randomly breaking on Mint so I almost want to think it was my fault, but I don't think I did anything weird recently. Reinstalling Steam probably would have fixed it as well, because I have to assume that the Steam installer set up those associations in the first place, but that's an extreme measure.
I did recently install Bottles... which already pissed me off because it created a ~/Games/umu/ directory for no reason, as I mentioned in the last thread. Surely it wouldn't also be breaking my gio mime shit though.
>>
>>581721358
That actually created some file like ~/.config/mimeapps.list that didn't exist before, so it felt more like a workaround than a real fix. So I deleted that file and did some more fucking around.
Looks like the actual fix (which I got from an actual web search result (get fucked ChatGPT lmao)) was to run
>update-desktop-database ~/.local/share/applications/
which updated the ~/.local/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache that already existed.
I still don't know exactly what was the state of my system when this was working before, because I can't imagine why the Steam lines would have been removed from this cache file if they were there before. But at least this puts the x-scheme-handler/steam association in the same cache that already had lines for x-scheme-handler/itch and some others instead of creating a separate file for it. This also feels like a better solution because this has presumably updated the cache based on what's already in my desktop entries (namely the Steam entry's "MimeType" field), as opposed to manually forcing shit.
>>
I click on game, I play game, can't be easier than that.
>>
>>581727815
From the last time I screwed around with mime, those are the set of commands you need:
xdg-mime query filetype "path/to/file"
xdg-mime query default "mimetype"
xdg-mime default "program" "mimetype"
on my machine, running "xdg-mime query default x-scheme-handler/steam" returns steam

>on my machine, running "xdg-mime query default x-scheme-handler/steam" returns steam
I was seeing the same on my machine the whole time. But "gio mime x-scheme-handler/steam" was still returning nothing, until I did either "gio mime x-scheme-handler/steam steam.desktop" (which I then undid by deleting ~/.config/mimeapps.list) or "update-desktop-database ~/.local/share/applications/". I had actually tried "update-desktop-database" earlier but apparently it needs the argument.

xwayland is a campatibility layer that allows you to run x11 software on a wayland system, generally speaking native wayland is better but some games may or may not break for some reason i'm not aware of

Why wouldn't it be? If you're referring to the fact that WoW64 exists, the answer is that native 32-bit games also exist. If you don't play those, then... well, you don't need what you won't use. I don't actually know which mangohud binary gets used by a 32-bit Windows game running in Wine's WoW64 mode, but you could always just uninstall the 32-bit binary and see if you lose the overlay in anything.

Bump. At least we survived Monday
>>
Afternoon bumpu. Latest mesa release fixed an issue I was having.
>>
>>582072367
What issue?
>>
X11, I want to get 1440x1080 4:3 aspect ratio. In Windows it was just a one click but here with nvidia-settings and all this shit it seems to be an impossible task.
Claude can't seem to help either. Most forum posts regarding this matter are outdated.
>nvidia-settings --assign CurrentMetaMode="HDMI-0: 1920x1080_60 +0+0 {ViewPortIn=1440x1080, ViewPortOut=1440x1080+240+0}"
I can do this, but my desktop is still basically in 1920x1080 and games have offset buttons.
How can I enforce strict aspect ratio scaling or something? If I wasn't using "AI" I would buy AMD graphics card at this point.
4:3 aspect is useful for some old games for example.
>>
>>582085808
https://man.archlinux.org/man/xrandr.1
or use gamescope
>>
>>582086619
Gamescope is the easiest but that will introduce input lack especially in games like CS2 which is a shitty linux port.
>>
>>582086990
*input lag
Typos here and there, an early dementia
>>
>>582085808
You can change how the display is scaled when it doesn't fit your monitor 1 to 1 by setting the scaling mode:
xrandr --output DP-1 --set "scaling mode" "Full aspect"

That will put the image in the center with black bars
>>
>>582085808
>>582098750
also on linux you normally dont use vendor specific tools since the functionality works on every gpu the same way. I believe the command you are using doesn't change the resolution to 1440x1080 but instead scales it. Do this instead, which works on any gpu:

# First run cvt to get the mode string which you use then with xrandr:
cvt 1440 1080 60

# Add the mode to x11:
xrandr --newmode "1440x1080_60.00" 129.00 1440 1528 1680 1920 1080 1083 1087 1120 -hsync +vsync

# Add the mode to your monitor:
xrandr --addmode DP-1 "1440x1080_60.00"

# Change the monitor to use that new mode:
xrandr --output DP-1 --mode "1440x1080_60.00"

# Change scaling mode so that it adds black bars instead of stretching the image to fit the monitor
xrandr --output DP-1 --set "scaling mode" "Full aspect"
>>
>>582098750
>>582099179
Doesn't work like that, this is the issue with xrandr for me. I get all these errors.
>X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)... Major opcode of failed request: 140 (RANDR)
This is why I am so confused about this. It's not the end of the world but in Windows all it takes two clicks for me to enable 1440x1080 and get a proper aspect ratio too.
>xrandr --newmode "1440x1080_custom_60.00" 129.00 1440 1528 1680 1920 1080 1083 1087 1120 -hsync +vsync
>xrandr --addmode "HDMI-0" "1440x1080_custom_60.00"
>xrandr --output "HDMI-0" --mode "1440x1080_custom_60.00"
>>
>>582103051
To add, if I'm doing it simply like this
>xrandr --output "HDMI-0" --mode "1440x1080"
It does work but the image is scaled to 16:9 instead of being 4:3.
If I do
>xrandr --output "HDMI-0" --mode "1440x1080" --set "scaling mode" "Full aspect"
Then I get this vague error

X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)
Major opcode of failed request: 140 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 11 (RRQueryOutputProperty)
Serial number of failed request: 42
Current serial number in output stream: 42
>>
>>582103351
The error BadName (named color or font does not exist) occurs because the proprietary NVIDIA driver does not expose the "scaling mode" RandR property that xrandr is trying to set. This property is a standard part of the RandR 1.2 specification and is typically available with open-source drivers like nouveau or amdgpu, but NVIDIA's proprietary driver implements display scaling through its own mechanisms instead.
>>582085808
Deepseek recommended this setting: nvidia-settings --assign CurrentMetaMode="HDMI-0: nvidia-auto-select +0+0 {ViewPortIn=1440x1080, ViewPortOut=1920x1080+240+0}"
Pay attention to ViewPortOut option
>>
>>582104671
Yeah, this nvidia-settings thing is something what I have tried already too.
Well I guess I'm out of luck then.
Who would have guessed that setting up a simple 4:3 resolution in 2026 with nvidia on linux is impossible.
>>
>>582105594
doesn't the monitor have the option to set aspect ratio? or the x11 monitor output ignore that?
>>
>>582107164
or does*
>>
>>582107164
Wait, I had it on 'wide' instead of 'auto'. Now my setup works, I just needed to add
>Option "ModeValidation" "AllowNonEdidModes"
Under "Screen" section in xorg/conf.d/20-nvidia.conf...
Then not sure about this
>Option "Metamodes" "HDMI-0: nvidia-auto-select; 1920x1080 {ViewPortIn=1440x1080, ViewPortOut=1440x1080+240+0};"
But it's there anyway.
Now selecting 1440x1080 from nvidia-settings is actually working.
So it was a wild goose chase after all.
But I do assure you even with 'wide' setting my screen was able to output a proper 4:3 in Windows.

In Oblivion that's impossible because of the retarded level scaling, past level 25 you're getting fucked because enemies scale but you don't and because there are no items that scale past that level.
The only way to break that game is to spam quickload at the end of the oblivion gates in hope to get your fucking chameleon orb, farm three of these and enemies can't see you.
