SOrry for the wall of text but i need to post my late night rant:I started playing advanced Yu-Gi-Oh! last year during the Dracotail/Yummy/K9/Maliss/Mitsu meta, and as a new player my deck was some stupid going-second deck: Gem-Knight.Not much to say: at locals I initially lost pretty much every game because I literally didn't know half the cards in the game, until we reached the DOOD meta and I fine-tuned the list a bit for Vanquish/K9 and YummyMitsu. I even won a few locals. Some matchups were literally autowins going second, and the few times I lost were because I lost the die roll and was forced to go first.Then the Mjolnir combo came around and I literally had to delete Gem-Knight. It was impossible to win going second.I bought Maliss, started playing competitively again, and then the new banlist came around and fixed a good chunk of the game.Today I'm realizing that the power level of decks, compared to a year ago, has basically doubled. Negates have gone from 2 to 4 or more, and there are situations where you literally cannot play.As a TCG player in general, I've taken a look at pretty much everything in the current meta, from Tier 1 to Tier 3. Even Tier 3 decks are straight-up stronger than the decks we had a year ago, and that's to say that even the uninterrupted endboard of a deck that's barely outside the meta is basically an FTK.At this point, I don't think a banlist or a change of direction with new archetypes is enough, because going first without taking an interruption basically lets you win even with Mermail from two years ago.At this point, we need to focus on decks that can play on turn 0, and that can play STRONGLY on turn 0. The new AngeLech with Opening in E4, putting up two floodgates, is an example.This is the new YGO.And I want to make it clear that, in my opinion, what Konami is doing right now — printing cards like Pot of Sloth, Gallant, the new Trunade, etc. to fix going second — is fucking stupid.
