A friend bought me a subscription to that other game in anticipation of the new version and I...
I don't know. The game itself sucks, I'm bored out of my mind shooting shadow bolts over and over again. But man, it runs so well and doesn't even look half bad for a game older than GW1. I played way back in 2004 and so I'm pretty impressed just how smooth everything is, UI feels pretty decent, and things have clearly changed - removing what doesn't work and adding new things to fill those voids. Anyway, that's a lot of words that nobody is going to read to basically say that arenanet is embarrassingly incompetent.

Not much has changed in terms of how the game feels to play. You can play on the 1.12 client on private servers to compare.
Vanilla WoW to this day brutally mogs everything that came before or since in how good it feels to play.

It's kinda dumb that even now anet isn't making a proper push with sPvP and WvW, with a healthy system setup it's literally evergreen, they can go and fuck off to GW3 development and players will keep themselves entertained for a long time. WvW is at least getting a new map, sPvP is just left to rot in the worst state its ever been.

Anyway, having alot of fun with fire mage with the new relic before it gets needed, finally get to play my fire mage class fantasy, which is good since they nerfed my weaver SW/D spellsword build (why nerf anything on weaver? It was already subpar), there are some real bullshit mesmer/guard/engi builds still out in the wild that can just stunlock and then one shot you for free, but boy does it feel good to perfectly time all my evades, reflects, invulns and stun breaks to then set up my Megumin explosion magic

If you haven't played since they added expansions, be aware that any elite spec is going to massively outclass whatever core had, so you might feel forced to buy one of the expansions to stand a chance.

As for getting hero points for those specs, they made hero point challenges repeatable in the exapcs, which means you can usually follow a train of people just running the points for a daily reward. It might be possible to get all the points you need in just an hour or two.

WvW uses your actual gear, and you can buy hero points in WvW from the heroic notary vendor, using a WvW currency.
You can also get full exotic gear from the TEID-07 Unified Vendor in WvW, also using a WvW currency.

Is it easy to earn WvW currency as a shitter with bad gear and stats so I can eventually build myself up without needing to run around the expacs?
I don't mind buying a couple expacs but I'd just rather stick to PVP only if possible.

If you get into a decent size squad it's very easy to soak up wvw exp and currencies. Like if your buddy has a guild he currently runs with that you can join you'll be set, just show up and follow the tag around until you can get a real gear set and build which won't take long at all. Others have already said you'll need the HoT+PoF for gliding and the wvw mount, and other expansions for good elite spec and weapon choices. But you can unlock most or even all that stuff within wvw with reward tracks, testimony of heroic currencies, etc.

Honestly, I think the only thing I don't like about Dragon's Stand is the unskippable cutscene at the end.
