This is probably most prominently traceable to the Macedon/Thracia archetype allying with the bad guys for sympathetic reasons relating to the state of their nation, and they're usually fan favorites for a reason. Beyond that, characters are mostly motivated by resistance to the antagonists committing atrocities, devotion to their lord/nation, or personal ideals, and that being fleshed out with solid, meaningful background and reasons and goals and whatnot is what tends to make them great.I actually like BOTH politics and dark dragon cult conspiracies, I just genuinely think the cults, being the heralds of the ideal final bosses, deserve better than they have historically gotten.
