>What the heck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as Age of Decadence, A Hat in Time, Axiom Verge, Baba Is You, Battle Brothers, Battlerite, Card City Nights 2, Cave Story, CrossCode, Cultist Simulator, Darkwood, DashBored, Dead Cells, The Desolate Hope, Disco Elysium, Environmental Station Alpha, FTL, Guacamelee!, Hollow Knight, Knytt, LISA, Lobotomy Corp, Machinarium, Middens, Monolith, Monster Train, Noita, OFF, OneShot, Rimworld, Rain World, Slap City, Slay the Spire, Starsector, Subnautica, Sunless Skies, Tooth and Tail, Underrail, VA-11 HALL-A, Yume Nikki, etc., as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Pillars of Eternity, Rayman, and Valkyria Chronicles. /jrpg/ is welcome. Idle games are cool too.

Mobile or consoles, Flash or Unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads, however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

Very solid but it's chock full of fiddly bullshit and if it's anything like it used to be a lot of stuff that's important at endgame can be locked by faction quests, so sometimes you have to route what path you pick through sidequests on each ascension so that you can ferret through them for crap you won't need for 100 hours.

Chronicon is another really solid ARPG, just got even more DLC this week.

I can get all DLC, not just for that game, at 100% off and not feel in the least bit guilty because I already own the base game.
If a company refuses to give a proper discount for DLC, it is your duty to pirate it. You already own the base game so it's fine, what you paid for that main game is not your concern.
I'm probably the most anti-piracy guy here. You'd probably accuse me of sucking dev cock on any other day.

IIRC the two version are different only in terms of graphics and some added content.
The only bad thing of the HD PC version is that it's a smartphone port so the UI is clearly built for touchscreen and the text font is godawful.

Apostate (Inquisitor + Necromancer) is pretty weak, but they generally did a good job of giving every class some universally desirable skills so most combinations are B+ tier at worst.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4623570/Deskrawl_Idle_ARPG/
>>
>>583255948
Do you want games that play themselves for you, or do you just enjoy the idea of an autobattler because you have to plan and strategize around your lack of direct control? I'm asking because there is this creature collector autobattler called Botworld Odyssey and it's really cool and fun and engaging, but you actually need to think about what you do, who and where you deploy, which support skills you use, etc. It won't play itself for you.
>>

Based, the best kind of idle player. Ye, then try Botworld Odyssey, it's actually pretty good at it. Has a demo as well.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2936030/Botworld_Odyssey/

This also has a demo. Though I wasn't particularly impressed with it. It seems like it has a lot of potential for synergy-building, but it's very autistic and filled to the brim with number vomit.

new month so I'm gonna blogpost for filler again
>Feudal Alloy – Sometimes a 6/10 metroidvania is $2 and that’s a ticket to be 10 hours closer to death if I’ve ever heard one. It’s generic and pretty poorly structured but makes me much more interested in Scarlet Deer Inn which I already had my eye on for having all its spritework be embroidered. This game’s main issue is consumables being both mandatory for healing and dealing simon-says elemental damage, but so common that they should’ve just been cooldowns or alterations of basic abilities. The equipment system was far more fiddly than necessary, and despite having a heat gauge for roughly stamina purposes, it doesn’t do anything like Ghost Song (and maybe Mindsieze?) where you can dump heat into your melee attacks for more damage. Still, sometimes you make a game that exists. This exists.
>>
>Shelldiver – It’s apparently a trend to have short incremental games that aren’t idlers but have a dense 3-6 hour progression curve before capping out. Most of that space is eaten up by roguelites and such but there’s also the ones more akin to A Game About Digging a Hole or (the) Gnorp Apologue where the number goes up and then you have such a big number the game ends. This is one of those. Simple skill tree that gradually makes you a nonsensical font of AoEs, simple progression through similar maps doing similar tasks, simple everything. Really the only mentally challenging part of the game is the promo art showing a cute chibi turtle and the actual sprite being a turtle that’s old as hell with liver spots.

DO NOT THE CAT
>>
>Metroid Prime 4: Beyond – I’m glad I was able to borrow this because holy shit if I’d bought it I’d feel not so much insulted as actively betrayed. On its face the game is straightforwardly bad: A poor gestalt between console FPS combat and traditional Metroid Prime lock-on, its lush environments obscuring the resoundingly mediocre enemy variety, the music that is forgettable when it is not literally absent in the massive desert sitting in the middle of the map like a torso-sized ulcer struggling to connect limbs infected with various stages of gangrene, the aesthetics and biomes that feel like naked retreads of Prime 1 and 2 with nothing new to offer, and the fucking BK Kids Club constantly yapping in your ear. What’s insidious is the clear potential that is buried under layers and layers of development hell. Cosmobreeder Yiffai taught me that the MGS codec system is a beautiful fit for metroidvanias, but even though there’s a button on the map to call the dipshit menagerie (and I hit that button often trying to use the map markers) it doesn’t work the vast majority of the time. If you want me to care about these dipshits, let me initiate conversations! Weave them into the scan visor so I can only learn about machinery once I rescue the Rick Moranis wannabe. Don’t teach me about the enemy tactics until I rescue Store Brand Sergeant Johnson. There was a chance here to actually make something interesting happen in spite of the desert that gave me flashbacks to hunting crystals in Ratchet and Clank and the impressively yonic architecture. That chance was squandered and lost. Hopefully Ravenous isn’t MercurySteam once again making a game that’s centered around parries where you don’t get power bombs until three rooms before the final boss or I’m going to have to really wonder if grinding SMZ3 randomizers is actually liking a game.

So are you constantly getting mugged by refugees while the police tells everyone you're a nazi because you dare running away on your unlicensed bike instead of nicely sharing your money?
>>
>Borderlands 4 – If I had a nickel for every 4th entry in a much-aggrieved shooter series that was formative to my taste in video games but wildly inconsistent in quality to a degree that the third game all but killed the franchise and I only played the fourth game because it was free, I’d have two nickels. I paid for Ratchet: Deadlocked way back when or I’d have three nickels. What is there to say about Borderlands 4? That it’s immediately better than 3 despite its myriad problems? That the open-world map is an abandonment of the genuinely atmospheric and well-structured subareas from 1 and 2? That it wrote a tutorial character that was surprisingly charismatic and interesting before doing a fake-out betrayal followed immediately by that character’s death? That they’re still chasing the specter of Handsome Jack’s popularity and trying to inorganically force lightning to strike twice? I only played for 5 or so hours during the free weekend, and while that wasn’t enough for me to spend $30 on the game it was enough for me to remember that Borderlands is the only franchise that has given me a melee-based character who causes enough explosions that I have to locate nearby enemies with the minimap. 4 has a dude who can punchlunge towards enemies even if those enemies are airborne. I’m going to go back to this eventually. After 1700 hours in the games it’s in my blood.

"Buy the amiibo to install a radio in your bike" is where it gets stupid.

>Slay the Spire mixed with X
Probably 7/10 times. Dark Souls and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. It seems every game with dodging, stamina, enemies that reset at checkpoints (or all three) is now a "Soulslike." Likewise, if a game uses a "find an ability and come back later to use it" it's a "Metroidvania." Serious lack of creativity a lot of the time. Did you get anything yet from the Steam sale?

>Isle of Reveries – Despite, or perhaps because of, my love for the Zelda series, indie clones never quite do it for me. Sure I’ve enjoyed games like Master Key and Pipistrello but nothing hits quite the same chord. Maybe it’s Zelda having the authority to “be Zelda” and everything else is in an endless sea of reference in to a series that plants one of its core tenets as motif and cyclical allusion. Twilight Princess is Ocarina of Time is A Link to the Past but god forbid an indie dev copy the ALttP sword arc. To its credit, Isle of Reveries is charming, clever, inventive with its item usage, willing to stymie and confuse the player with its dense overworld, and deeply trusting in its own design. Unfortunately, its dungeons were made by someone who thought Eagle’s Tower in Link’s Awakening was cool but needed to be three times longer. It is intensely common to be very deep down a side path and learn that because you didn’t go the other way and get a small key you have no recourse other than to backtrack through a dozen rooms, poke around somewhere else, find a nugget of progress, and keep moving forwards. You can get away with something like Ganon’s Tower when it’s the capstone of the game and leveraging a wide variety of interlaced mechanics, it’s less charming when the dungeon is entirely themed around one item and is so uncommunicative that it’s unclear if you’re misunderstanding the puzzle or going through rooms in the wrong order. After I gave up on the game the dev added an even more intricate optional dungeon that had been cut for time. I’m happy for them.

>Kiborg – My tastes are profoundly simple. If I can punch a man in the head and steal his shit, I’ll probably like the game. Redeemer was the previous games by these devs and despite the thick eurojank that meant most of the skill tree didn’t work and endgame balance was a suggestion at best, there was promise. A melee brawler roguelike sounded damn good, and it was finally priced to move. Unfortunately this still hasn’t solved the core issue of action roguelikes where either the core mechanics are able to beat the game, in which case the random elements are window dressing, or they are not, and it devolves into the same DPS race of how much damage can you do and how much HP can you obtain. The punching is also profoundly stiff, simplistic, and overall mediocre for a game where it’s this centralized. It’s 2026, how are you doing a bad version of Arkham combat?

That's the bitch. It was being 20 rooms deep into some fuckass reflection puzzle where it wasn't clear if I had all the pieces and was missing some mechanical interaction, finally making progress, and then learning that I actually had to be on the other side of the dungeon to get a small key first, THEN I'd be allowed to seesaw back through this horseshit. All without my sword, or my potions. I've played ALttP rando dozens of times. I'll throw pots and debris at mooks all damn day. But fuck me that dungeon is ass.

I've got a lot of time and a lot of patience but I was fucking done at that point. I'm also sick with the 'remove all the player's abilities to make them feel powerless for a while at the endgame' because although it's mechanical texture and can break up some staleness if your core gameplay loop is fun and interesting then by necessity stripping me of all the tools I've built up is going to be boring and frustrating. Sure, it's deliberate, but if I deliberately kick a man in the balls that doesn't exonerate me.
>>
I don't get the No-Go Zones in XF Extreme Formula.

>>
>>583403437
I put two hours into it a few months ago. It seemed fine? You definitely need to be a Binding of Isaac fan in terms of wikitrawling to look up item effects, esoteric horseshit for midgame progression, and patience for deliberate trap/joke items. I'm pretty sour on roguelites lately so take all that with a grain of salt.
>>
>Hell is Us – I saw this mentioned this in a thread about puzzle games and I was confused. I’d seen the game around; generic title, dude on the cover looking like a Watchdogs ripoff, the kind of nothinburger of a game that fills gamepass by the dozen. I had nothing better to do so I gave it a shot and what I found was a game that tried to fit in the fascinating seam between Soulslike environmental lore dumps and Myst environmental lore dumps. A fragment of a key lies in a churchyard next to a note talking about how the excavation team took the rest to a government office. You travel there and find the other key and take it back to the first area and it opens a chest which has a weapon enhancement. It flows oddly, and has the same issue I ran into with the Loathing games where after a while the combat and size of the map was in the way of the exploration and puzzles. Enemy variety was also mediocre, but that was corrected in a patch that came out a week after I stopped playing. Also even though games are scraping the bottom of the barrel for what the reason is for the map to be a shithole of killing and looting, I haven’t seen any other designer base their game in a pastiche of The Troubles.

>Well Dweller – Kyle Thompson made another metroidvania. It’s pretty good, though definitely the weakest of his four games. The art, music, writing, and routine map design are all on par but it’s a little directionless. It feels like there was a core of the game that was removed. The first movement ability that’s obtained is launching your weapon and embedding it into walls as a springboard. I’ve seen this before in games like Thread and really enjoyed it, but the game never builds on it. You can only ever fire it laterally while standing on the ground, and the other movement abilities you get are generic and stiff. For most devs this would be a fine showing but for someone with this pedigree of inventiveness and atmosphere this is something of a letdown.
>>
>The Tenth Line – I buy a lot of niche indie games with spurious designs. I deliberately pursue solo projects because I like to see what absolute horseshit someone will cook up when they go multiple years without an editor. That lets me see a lot of things I could find nowhere else. Sometimes that’s a good thing. You have to move each of your three party members individually through the metroidvania maps, with each having their own movement abilities and jump arcs. The auto-follow is mediocre and if they fall too far behind they won’t join you in the turn-based battles. Your attacks in the battle dimension have MP costs, areas of effect against the rows and columns of enemies, and cooldowns. Every party member has their own resource systems and mechanics. There’s a sphere grid that uses inventory items for spheres so you might have to choose between keeping a rare consumable around or slotting it in to make a connection. Triple Triad is here. It has some of the most 2007 voice acting imaginable despite coming out in 2017. The PDF manual is almost 40 pages long and it is a BRIEF summary of mechanics. I didn’t even last an hour, if I was going to put up with this level of nonsense I would’ve stuck with Horizon’s Gate. More power to the developer, I’ve been outfreaked.
>>
>Mirrored Soul – I met the developer of this online once, I forget if I got the key for free from him. This is the sort of game that The Edge of Allegoria was trying to be. Clearly a Pokemon parody but with deeper mechanics, a more elaborate overworld structure, and a more adult tone. The main difference is the writing is actually clever here and the RPG mechanics are good. Monsters gain moves as they level, and any two monsters can fuse to become a new monster. These are Digimon-style evolution chains so they go in circles, but fusion lets you carry forward up to two moves so you can go in a circle to give a monster two moves it could never learn otherwise or to boost its stats through consumables. Unfortunately despite having an aesthetic and mechanical appreciation for that depth in the abstract, I still don’t actually enjoy this style of RPG. I keep thinking I do. But when the battles take several turns for random fodder and catching a pokemon is a detailed conversation minigame that has one solution per species, the tedium outpaces the depth rapidly.

Kiborg is funny because its so objectively bad but its also like the only thing russians have released in 20 years so the reviews champion it
Its layers of shit on layers of shit
>Can do various combos to break armor, hit crowds, etc
HOWEVER, you knock enemies back as you hit them, often out of range if you do anything but the basic combo, at which point he arkhams at them, resetting the combo OR knocking them away again if you were trying to combo with heavy; as such, most of the combos are literally unuseable
>You can replace your body parts with robotics for bonuses, mixing and matching to look cool and do cool things
HOWEVER, there is no point to ever not just do a full set, ever, at all. Its always just better to do that.
>Can use guns, weapons and such to vary combat
HOWEVER, unless you all in on the melee body, melee breaks near instantly and is slow to replace. Unless you go all in on gun body, ammo is too limited. So most of the time these mechanics may aswell not exist
This is on top of individual bad design like the gun body replacing combo finisher with a free powerful gunshot but you do not have to hit enemies to do this so its just an infinite ammo overpowered gun or the body that gives you status effects but applies it to enemies to eventually just making you immune to them all so you just walk in rooms and 9/10 enemies die instantly and the survivors (even bosses) have a status effect that removes all armor mechanics so you just mash X until they die
Like damn I really feel challenged when the final fucking boss can't fight back and most rooms died before I moved

Playing something I got in the last sale while I mull over my decisions for this one. Wayward. I've explored most of the main coastline of the first island, I believe. I've gone down into a cave, speared a bunch of spiders, and then ran into an aberrant 「Spooky Scary Skeletons」 who chased me back out. I'm actually considering crafting some wooden armor. I've got a nice pile of seeds from wandering around. I've seen two scarecrows in a couple of seemingly abandoned farm plots. Brought one back to camp. I've yet to see any people, however. Not sure if that's good or bad yet. I've got no concrete direction to go in, for now, but I need to see what I can do about this curse that is slowly building.

I had a dream where I was playing a Looney Tunes Dynasty Warriors, and after the final mission the ending cutscene was a MGS-like rant about how the digital age lets people spin up a fake persona at any time to hide themselves from any meaningful interaction, and interpersonal connections are gradually torn down not only by discussions becoming meaningless from people arguing for and against things without actually caring about the topic at all, but a person's sense of self being eroded away from the constant masks they form, wear, and discard on a whim to the point their personality becomes a formless sludge of contrarianism and apathy to be manipulated.

Im about to start tossing away most of my inherited money to hire friends and artists to work for my game but i wanted to ask some questions first about the current game market just to clear some questions/suspicions

1. Am i correct to assume theres a huge missing market for straightforward action games that dont belong to any particular label? Almost everything these days is a roguelike, a souls-style game, a 2 hour long game, a metroidvania, something following a trend, something of the sort. Theres barely any unique lengthy straightforward action games with their own combat. Am i correct to assume that anything with good length and quality like this would stand out and sell a lot?

2. Personally how much would you care about trying to move away from trends? Fresh healing mechanic instead of shit like estus flask style healing, no i-frame dodges or deflect parries. Generally aiming for more directional dodging and enemy design around making it tricky to decide what is the correct direction to evade before its too late, or by trying to combine moves to put you in a bad spot to defend from the next ones. In my mind i think fresh means fun, but idk the minds of others and most people ive talked to seem indifferent/dont think it matters. Would you say this is good and relevant or is it just my spergy autistic obsession?

3. How big a deal is it to have vertical progression, new moves, upgrades etc in such a game? Would having nothing except sidegrade equippables make people lose interest over 15+ hours? How much do people tolerate using the exact same wide-ish moveset?

1, I think trying to predict or gauge the viability of an idea in the indie market is a fools errand, but just my 2 cents, the market as a whole is shifting towards casual experiences, dressmaker, all the low skill ceiling coopgames, rise of cozy games, autobattlers, etc.

2, I do not care about new things inherently, something is either good or it isn't, novelty will never be a selling point to me.

3, people like the dopamine response of getting an immediately worthwhile upgrade, upgrading your weapon and oneshotting an enemy that you previously could, this is why roguelikes work because they are a slotmachine that will eventually let you oneshot things. Also this no longer sounds straight forward like furi.

I am admittedly not your target audience.
>>
>>583533851
That market was the AA segment and I'd say its needs are unmet but also that style of game is only really possible to build with a tenured team of 20-50 working at pace in a consistent environment. An indie squad isn't making PS2 God of War even if Santa Monica isn't either.

Bucking trends is fine but you need to design TOWARDS something. If your gameplay cadence is best met by estus, heart drops, lifesteal, whatever, do what your game needs. Don't start with "we're avoiding this, this, and this" or you end up reinventing the wheel.

Vertical progression is important for texture, even if it doesn't have to be major. The issue with giving everyone the full list from the start is that the player has no sense for their bread and butter, their cool overelaborate combos, and their situational but neat stuff. They're going to be using simple attack strings anyways while they test their limits. You don't have to go full DMC and make it so the first playthrough is a tutorial/currency grind for the 'real game' but that's closer than not.

>Am i correct to assume that anything with good length and quality like this would stand out and sell a lot?
No. The premise sounds appealing to me because I miss games like that, but vidyadev is always a gamble.
>Would you say this is good and relevant or is it just my spergy autistic obsession?
Spergy obsession. Originality for its own sake is just as damaging as trend chasing. If a mechanic makes your game better, use it.
>How big a deal is it to have vertical progression, new moves, upgrades etc in such a game? Would having nothing except sidegrade equippables make people lose interest over 15+ hours? How much do people tolerate using the exact same wide-ish moveset?
Spyro got popular with just a fire breath and dash attack, so it really depends on the game. Even Zelda games have a pretty small moveset, and I don't think having unlockable techniques in Twilight Princess made the combat any better. Again, it depends heavily on your game. Unlocking something cool in Kingdom Hearts feels really good.
>>
>>583536190
>Don't start with "we're avoiding this and this " or you end up reinventing the wheel.
Well yeah thats not the goal here, i always had my obsessions like "I wish this was more like X" but for an actual reason/goal/experience in mind.

For example i dont want to have no i-frames for the heck of it. A lot of games have no i-frames but enemies are completely boring to evade because you just brainlessly outspace them. How few games make you quickly have to decide between dodging left, right, backwards, diagonal, forward? Or something entirely different altogether like slashing the projectile midair? I think these kind of feelings are rare in action games, but consistently exciting.
As for the healing, i generally dont find chugging potions/consumables interesting. I think its cooler when people heal from the action, and taking damage doesnt pause your momentum. I specially dislike the trend where enemies deal very high portions of your healthbar, and in turn its a game where youre not meant to ever be hit too frequently unless you catastrophically fuck up. I want forgiving damage and healing so enemies can be meaner and have more potential to chain hits on you. I want taking damage and healing to be fun, i want people to be more impressed/amused at enemies pulling disgusting combos and cheesy tricks, rather than frustrated.

In general i think action vidya get very repetitive and staler when people take mechanics from other games purely because its the mechanics they know, when their games instead called for their own unique solution that fits it best. Kind of like how i enjoy fromsoft's games much more than i enjoy most developers copying fromsoft's mechanics. Or how i like something like Silksong way more than its competitors because it has its own unique heal system, no i-frame dodges, etc and instead everything is tailor made for what it wants to be. In my game i want everything to synergize and be fun, even taking damage and getting hit by enemies

>The issue with giving everyone the full list from the start is that the player has no sense for their bread and butter, their cool overelaborate combos, and their situational but neat stuff.
Is that really a problem? They are going to start simpler, but they are naturally going to get better and more natural at their own moveset, at the same time as they build their own playstyle. They will get mechanically better and more knowledgeable about their moves, at the same time as the enemies and challenge they face become trickier too. But this is one of the harder aspects for me to handle.
Both in the games where i was just an extra developer, and my own shitpost little games: While i was very good at abstracting/intuiting how the player will feel towards the pacing of levels, learning enemies, exploring, etc, being able to tell how they will go through the motions of learning and utilizing a moveset has always been one of my weaker struggles

Im past that phase kinda, i made a few shitpost or passion games before. Now i feel like i need to put myself through the test of "do i actually have the dilligence for a 3-5+ year project" and "do i actually have good taste and vision for a real game"
1/3 my cash is invested for safety and 2/3 my cash is what im willing to completely waste to figure out the answer to the questions above
>The only game i know that tried that ended up adding them later because people kept complaining
I wondered about that too. In theory its not like my game would be totally downgraded or ruined my adding these. But i think it would really water down what i actually intend with the enemies, and the message i want to get across
>No, they stopped making those because people barely care about them
Is that so? I cant really think of any such games that failed to sell, unless they had something that blatantly screamed "low quality/unnapealing". Do you have any examples you can provide? Id like to play them if yes

You're clearly very passionate but if you're ever going to actually make a game you're going to have people you care about more than me telling you to stop because you're being a moron so I'm going to tell you to give you practice ignoring the feedback, this isn't how you go about things. In fact, this is exactly what reinventing the wheel looks like. Sure, you can give the player full fidelity in which direction they dodge, but unless you make massive sacrifices to the control scheme (such as PS2 GoW's fixed camera freeing up the right stick) that becomes very fiddly especially because the closer your camera the harder it becomes to judge distance and have an actual view of the battlefield. If you're going to punish imprecision you need to give the player enough information to be precise, and more to the point you need to make that execution interesting.

Letting players heal from the action is modern AAA raspberry jam with another face. If you're able to consistently damage enemies HP doesn't matter and if you aren't HP doesn't exist. And no amount of visual spectacle will make a player enjoy enemies wresting control away from them for entire combos.

I've played a lot of games by overambitious solo devs. In many ways it's one of my favorite genres. You're currently en route to creating an action game that caters to your intuitive playstyle, with a list of combos only digestible because you've been steeped in it for years, and a pace of play that you find natural but has no flexibility for other people. Those aren't flaws. Being unflinching in your designs means the people the game is for will love it. It also means you run the risk of digging a very deep hole that only has room for one person, and using it to bury your head in the sand.

>ut unless you make massive sacrifices to the control scheme (such as PS2 GoW's fixed camera freeing up the right stick) that becomes very fiddly especially because the closer your camera the harder it becomes to judge distance and have an actual view of the battlefield
Im actually aiming for a top down isometric in this one, more budget friendly
I think the game will be more demanding on precision, but ill complement it with a more forgiving healthbar and healing system.
>And no amount of visual spectacle will make a player enjoy enemies wresting control away from them for entire combos.
The idea is less so "your control is taken away from several seconds" but moreso "You got baited or reacted poorly several times within 10 seconds" or "Enemies just lined up multiple hits at you within a second"
>If you're able to consistently damage enemies HP doesn't matter and if you aren't HP doesn't exist.
Well ideally youre able to keep on slightly-more-than-positive terms for you to keep going.

>with a list of combos only digestible because you've been steeped in it for years,
Oh no, i absolutely despise that shit. i feel like so many devs get autistic about their CAG style moveset that feels like ass to get into for most players. To me its very obvious at a glance
I believe games should be very low attrition in this regard. Im not saying the moveset has to be low skill ceiling, but the moveset MUST be easy and natural for players to get into. You should be fighting the enemies, not your controls.
By extension like i said im good at the levels/enemy pacing so im going to be really autistic about introducing this to people, the delivery of which enemies show up when, how much is demanded at any given time, etc has to be extremely deliberate and well made at the beginning of the game, to help hook people into it.

> It also means you run the risk of digging a very deep hole that only has room for one person,
I understand this concept but i always felt like this was a failure from the developer in practice. When its well done, most players have little issue getting into the mood of it. When its poorly done, the few autistic players who love it would have loved it more if it was actually well made.

also post scriptum
>aiming for a top down isometric in this one, more budget friendly
Thats not to say i picked it just because its budget friendly. Its primarily like this because i really wanted a game like this, and it works well against what you described: It gives people a better clearer view of distances and enemy attacks, it lets me go all-into the directional-dodging-precision bullshit. It just so happens to be the only action game out of the ones i wanna make that i can actually afford right now.

>this isn't how you go about things. In fact, this is exactly what reinventing the wheel looks like.
i dont think so. Isnt reinventing the wheel basically trying to come up with a new thing that brings no new value?

the proposal here isnt any new groundbreaking unexplored mechanic. its not like dodging is a novel concept. but it is true that action games let you i-frame or parryslop everything and you barely care about these nuances of attacks. is it really such a crime/farfetched goal to want to make people actually care about where they are dodging?

If you are passionate about whatever idea then you should want to be able to actually replicate it and allow others to experience it and understand it
you want it to spread around and be played by many and for them to actually be affected by how your game feels.

Its also the way you get to tell how your game *actually* is, because games arent primarily played by developers who already know how all of it works. Its by people playing blindly for the first time not knowing what comes next

Yah its also why testing is important and more devs should use the steam play test or do demos if they're indie and cannot afford testers.
Ie in the event it took me maybe 30 seconds to find a bug in one game falling through the floor, another game I had to be told where to go because it was not sign posted you can break a specific wall at all, another I put the console down and let it play itself infront of the dev to show how absurdly easy it is right now (he's working on ramping up difficulty sooner apparently) and another I beat the boss by standing behind a wall holding M1 until it died as it could not shoot past it but I could.
All of which things that can easily be fixed ONCE FOUND, but you need either the right kind of person or a lot of people to find these issues.

Okay so I put 15 hours into kynseed and I feel mixed. I don't love it. But it's very clearly that the team who made it put an absurd amount of love into their "dream game". But that's a double edge sword, because it gives the feeling of reading an amateur fanfic rather than a curated product. It's not a question of balance or skill either, the game feels rather well balanced. And some of the things that happen are interesting ideas, but that's all they are. Interesting ideas. The mechanics are complex but not very deep. None of what I've seen so far has been "bad", in fact, I'd argue that a lot of the mechanics are better than other big games in the genre like stardew valley. But it's also... Insipid. Tasteless. I can play for 5 hours straight and it does have the "just one more day" feel to it but it feels a bit like I'm just filling checkboxes rather than living the world. The gen 1 npcs have a tiny bit of a story but they feel bland and generic, like I honestly wouldn't care if all of them died of all age and I had a pool of completely generic replacement (which is what will eventually happen). I befriend them because they're workers, because it boost my kynseed and because it's part of completion. I help them because I get rewarded. But I feel no attachment to any of them.
What a weird game. It's the littlewood syndrome but somewhat worse.

Full price is $7.99 USD and the main dev seems to be relatively active in working on it. Guy does dev streams as he's doing so sometimes. There's even an old alpha version you can play on the Unlok (the devs) website from like, 2017 and you can kinda see how far it's come. I believe the lore is that you're a pirate who's who's washed ashore with some heavy amnesia. It's definitely scratching an itch and the systems make me not want to use a wiki to see if I can figure it out on my own. Everything you learn, from recipes to information on what skills can raise which stats, even learning about the existence of certain stats, stays for subsequent attempts. I'm really enjoying the soundtrack as well. Seems you can do up to 32 players multiplayer as well, so you can have a jolly crew of scallywags running around being cavemen if you want.

What are some of your favorite indie horror games? Preferably survival horror but I welcome any and all suggestions that make an attempt to be scary.

>>583589298
I've been playing Tombwater most recently. It's okay. Top-down "Soulslike" with a pretty basic moveset. The setting is the most interesting part of it (old West style with some Eldritch stuff thrown in). I'm maybe six hours in and I'm steadily losing interest. You can only improve one of three skills when you level up - HP, Stamina, and a third one that makes it so you can cast more spells before getting the Madness status, which is a debuff that makes you unable to cast unless you rest at a bonfire, or use a specific uncommon consumable. There aren't really "builds" because none of the weapons have stat requirements, being that there are no real "stats." Not a bad game, just unremarkable and I can't see myself replaying it, assuming I finish it.

>found a zombie post-apocalyptic PBBG in which everyone is in the same survivor camp
>all players share the same storage
>all players share the same story missions
>players have specialize in one or two roles(besides combat skills), like cooking, farming, hunting, medic, smithing, etc
>players have to team up to do raid on bosses/large amounts of zombies
These PvE, "all players work for the same goal" are rare as fuck.

the new update to project silverfish is really damn good. Its not all that much of new if you already played the beta, but the new things are massive
extremely shithole dungeon that lets you get a new regression matrix. A hidden "forge" that lets you turn eather into enchanted ammo, combined downside-less versions of artifacts, rhinojelly flumes, and more. new way to get debt receipts and lots of cash. cool new 5.7 gun

There are. They are the small shacks between the angel statues and columbariums.
But yea. I hope there's more graveyard stuff to unlock later. Right now is very lackluster.

I've got nothing to blogpost about, I've been playing two different retched 2D soulslikes and I'm trying to decide if eating weapons if I navigate the inventory too quickly is better or worse than merely being mediocre.

I started Outer Wild, but I know you fags, the moment I start posting about it, someone will decide:
1) it's trans/liberal propaganda and henceforth deserves to die
2) to spoil the entire game.

Otherwise... have you fags heard about Ratatan?

The first time I heard about outer wilds was on 4chan, when the game was still on beta, I downloaded it and the solar system simulation kinda blew my mind back in the day. Wild to think this game was released 10 years ago.

I wish more games tried to do what outer wilds did. No upgrades, levels or new unlocks, the progress in entirely in the form of information about the world.

i want to tell you to blogpost about your progress but there's probably nerds here who still haven't played it for some reason

>>583725654
What confuses me with Outer Wilds is that I barely even have time to get my bearings before.
Last time, I went in a straight line to the cannon-thing you see exploding when you wake up, and I barely had time to check the whole thing out before everything blew up.

>>583731180
it is a game about finding things in a solar system
it's very good if you enjoy figuring things out in a way distinct from normal puzzle games
