I want 9 to double down on character writing, I want PA to make me become REALLY attached to them, maybe even give me in-game choices that end up deepening my connections with them as we complete more and more sorties together and then I want to see them suffer the same faith that my enemies do in every single AC game. I want the radio go nuts, I wanna see their portraits go "OFFLINE", one by one.
Kinda getting tired of this trope where none of the guys you get attached to die but it's usually the one(s) you care about the least. These are wars goddammit. Coster should've been placing flowers at Tasha's grave at the end of the game. Practically everyone should've been dead, save for a couple of supporting characters that YOU DON'T EVEN EXPECT TO BE ALIVE BY MISSION 27 or something.

Staying back to fight off all the shadows was the highlight of the campaign for me i think. M28 or whichever with the mass bomber formation was neat but didnt really get me. Was neat having "remember these dickheads from 20 missions ago?" but the mission itself just felt like powerwashing a window over and over until mr ecm shows up
I might have ace combat fatigue bros..
>>
>>583151006
The only thing I really didn't like about it was having to still go for the bombers instead of dogfighting the entire time

Alternatively, they could make a sequel with the best wingbros a nugget could ask for, have everyone survive again and be back home by Christmas to crack a few bears after cleaning up the latest superweapon.

What have you played and what did you prefer
8 genuinely has 5-7 "move the plot forward missions" that are worst case scenario 4 minute long missions

They're charging $60 for 7. I'm not sure if it's worth it now that 8 is practically priced the same.

>>
>>583151582
8 is marginally better than 7 due to not having 100 rewrites but ue5 drags it down. Get 7 and if you like it and dont mind needing 140gb for a game get 8 on sale or pirate, i regret paying full price
>>
>>583150554

I think i only played 5 like 20 years ago on my ps2 but i remember nothing. Just that the last boss had a crazy laser weapon
>>
>>583151582
7 goes on sale for very cheap pretty frequently so I would wait for a sale to get it
>>
>>583151582
8 is better but 7 goes on sale for way cheaper
7 will help you appreciate 8 a little more too
>>
>>583151582
I'm not sure if I can stomach a third run of AC8's campaign on short notice (cleared multiroles-only) for the medal. It's great fun don't get me wrong, but 30 missions is honest bloat-tier and the campaign kinda overstays it's welcome.

if you ignore the narrative entirely, 7 has a better overall campaign, especially if you factor in the overall pacing. Rocky Island 1 and 2 was a damn slog 2nd time round, I have no idea why they're separate missions.

Weird pricing across certain regions on 7, considering some of those regions don't actually get to enjoy the same price reduction on 8. I don't understand what logic bumco follows when they set those prices.

>>
>>583151582
People are still in the honeymoon period so the recency bias is still there.

7 has better pacing, isn't too long and has better weapon variety (where campaign TLS and PLSL? Even endgame planes don't stock them) even at their launch versions.

Go with 7, otherwise get Project Wingman instead if there's aren't any discounts.
>>
>>583152941
I suspect being extremely broke FCU instead of being the rich Osea is why you dont get cool laser beam weaponry
>>
why was sotoan landbattleship #2 at stonehenge and why did nothing come of it?
>>
>>583152941
A little ironic talking about PLSL adding to weapon variety when it made every other weapon redundant
I enjoy PLSL too and would like more variety but it was always going to be the first on the chopping block

What the fuck even is this argument? Just don't use the PLSL then. No one's fault you're a meta slave, but it sure would be nice to use the railgun or the lasers as soon as you get to the F-15s or the Russian equivalents.

I even said I liked PLSL and more weapons at the start, PLSL is just a bad example of something worth bringing back because of its strengths, as novel as it is to have little lasers instead of big ones
I'm sure it will come back later, but it's pretty obvious why it got the cut initially
>>
PLSLs made 7 hella easy and fun
>>
>AC5

>AC8
>same shit as AC5 except there's a tick by your target(s) this time round

I think people vastly overrate the usefulness of your Wingmen in 8. I mean sure sometimes they do kill shit, but I'd kill shit much faster anyway so what the fuck is the point
>>
The bullets being stronger and having more reach in 8 felt like a nice touch considering a lack of PLSL, I was able to pull off quite a lot of hits I wasn't expecting this time around, especially during Mission 15
>>
>>583155178
They end up being slightly useful for 30 seconds once you give them morgan nukes and enable SP
>>
>>583154870
Except that they could have just rebalanced it as opposed to just removing it entirely.

Why are you already assuming that AC8's hypothethical PLSL would perform exactly as 7's?
>>
>>583155178
Kate killed Shadow 22 for me

Well, I had to land the killing blow with the gun, but she did all the damage while i just dragged him behind me

AC8 has the best normal wingmen commands in the series, but it's still not as useful as the Marigold KILLING ALL THE INVADERS when you hold up in AC6

>Why are you already assuming that AC8's hypothethical PLSL would perform exactly as 7's?
Because it's an entirely different conversation, same way you assumed I assumed that or you could assume they wouldn't
And in the timeline where they were in the game and rebalanced we'd be arguing about whether the rebalance was necessary because people would inevitably bitch that it happened
I miss LWSM and I look forward to it being in more games, too

>>
>>583156161
in this day and age? nobody. I don't even want an anime of it. It would be full of 3d slop for the planes and action scenes because unfortunately its not the 80s and 90s anymore
I'd rather lucid dream of a patlabor-esque ace combat anime
>>
>>583156129
Remember how Infinity had a really shitty Morgan early on that everyone could get?
They did it again but it's stronger now

Your retard ass is making this more complicated than it needs to be. I just want more shit to shoot with. Even if we ignore the PLSL entirely, the crux of the topic is limited weapon variety, and we still don't have any access to the railgun or TLS in launch campaign.

the one thing I like about the Morgan is that we finally get the -02 instead of -01 since it can equip both weapons at the same time, looks more complete that way

AC0 is great (i'd say top5) but it has spawned so many obnoxious niggers

This said, AC8 is great. It's the love son of AC5+AC6 with influences by all the other main games.

Man, you buddies weren't kidding when you said no one knows how to fight Chandelier. I'm pretty sure I personally killed 75% of the Cooling Units and I was one of only two pilots to fly down the barrel. MGP/UGB Phantom though.
>>
Someone mentioned it's possible to prevent Jackpot 9's death in Mission 8, do you just have to kill everything in their general vicinity to make that happen, or what?
It's pretty cool to see the different dialogue you can trigger on a second playthrough though, like in Mission 6, if you're fast enough, you can intercept the enemies on Tasha instead of Coster.

Because 7 has better set pieces, music direction and or cinematography.

Faceless Soldier can be a pain in the ass but ultimately culminates in a sweet view of Spare Squadron in formation while "Faceless Soldier" (the track) plays.

Bunker Buster SHOULD have been a boring-ass mission, except they had you bunkering busters alongside "Magic Spear 1"

5 and 8 don't have anything equivalent, not even on Mission 28 when random yahoos you can barely remember from 20 missions prior join you for whatever reason.

mission set pieces... i think i'd agree but better music direction and cinematography is highly debatable
>Faceless Soldier can be a pain in the ass but ultimately culminates in a sweet view of Spare Squadron in formation while "Faceless Soldier" (the track) plays.
i don't think that little shot that lasts for a few seconds and the decent music makes up for how restrictive the gameplay is in that mission
>bunker buster
that was on okay mission

5's 2-3-4-5-6-7 great mission string alone puts it on equal terms with 7 but then you add in sea of chaos, ACES and the music that plays during the SOLG shootdown in the unsung war and i just don't see what 7 has left. i guess the DLC

I do not like both Scramble and Emergency Sortie being some RNG selection process. I've been playing the online on and off since early release and not been selected once.

Why can't it just be after you do a set amount of Assault/Warfare missions?
>>
I'm not a doomer retard but having completed 1 and 2/3 runs of the campaign I do have a serious nitpick.

Does anyone else feel like the planes are frustratingly slow compared to the scale of the map? The levels honestly don't "feel" that much bigger than 7 in terms of spectacle, but getting anywhere feels like it takes forever.

I just measured this and going from the second ground target group in Expo City to the resupply line takes 1 full minute out of your mission time, even in FA-36 at full afterburner with the acceleration and speed/acceleration parts slapped on. That's a decent chunk of time on a score attack mission when you could be killing things. Instead, you just hold down the afterburner and wait for 30 seconds in either direction waiting to play again. If that was a loading screen it would be considered ridiculous. The mission is still easy to S-rank but just sitting there is very annoying.

You end up spending a lot of the campaign just flying between very separate clusters of enemies.
>>
>>583166984
debatable.
I don't think 7 had better missions per se - just better squad interactions and character growth.
We saw Trigger's fall, earning mythic status, and eventual rise to a legendary hero. As well as people's character arc.

8 - ironically, has weaker squad arcs overall. I really didn't care for Coster's favorite band dying or Tasha pulling a Tomb Raider of feeling bad about shooting someone 1 mission and then just shooting everyone and giggling the following day

I'm at mission 12 and it has become a slog for the last 2 missions, the story is going nowhere either. It's literally just war filler. When do the good missions start? And why is the music generic orchestra? Did the old ace combat music team get replaced? Even Assault horizon had better music

I also think that over time 8 will get a lot of comparisons with 8 because these maps give you target-rich environments but theres only so much you and Joker flight can do before you're forced to pick off targets one by one with missiles. In contrast, 6 gives you relatively huge reserves of SP weapons and the Emmerians are more than happy to delete enemies en masse for you

He's there to provide narrative insight into the Sotoans, especially Luna 11 who is one of the major antagonists. Consequently we understand more about them as an enemy faction than we did about the Eruseans in 7.

His memory is scrambled so he doesn't just spoil the story for you on mission 1.

More to the point why are people acting like 7 was a particularly strong entry out of the blue? It was basically a settled deal that it was a good game that fell short of its potential due to multiple rewrites and almost getting scrapped (also extremely bizarre translation decisions). I'm used to seeing that kind of contrarian revisionism on /v/ but not here.
>>
>>583167618
Yep, and if there are enemies that can fail the mission for you by attacking something you need to protect, chances are they aren't even marked TGT after the AWACS tells you about them and you have to spot them manually.

Sometimes I just want to enjoy the game in a set space with set enemies and blow shit up. Why people seemed to think annihilation missions were such a great filter in AC7 is beyond me, and it's probably why we don't have more of them in AC8. AC4 remains the GOAT for just letting you enjoy the mechanics of the game without nagging.

I got to mission 7 in 8. Performance issues are my biggest complaint. It runs fine but the loading is a bit long. Even on my old decrepit machine the graphics look passable. I'm just glad I'm stuck with the same squadron this time. 7 got weird by having you and Count swap around too often. It did take some use to flying the aircraft around but I am biased after playing through 7 so much and PW too (especially flying the superplanes there that cut through the air like a knife through, well, air). I do have concerns that it may be a slog but I'm just glad I haven't run into any real gimmick levels, scripted horseshit boss fights and drone spam. >immediate contender for too in the series

Almost had me taking you seriously. 8/8 bait post, got me to give you your (You).

The string of Expo City, Rocky 1 2, plus Megafloat are genuine slogfests once the honeymoon magic of a first playthrough over.
>>
>>583170101
I like the prowler mission because it asks you to fly
There are genuinely missions that have you start on one corner. Initiaally tell you to fly to another corner, and then teehee actually tell you to fly to the other corner
And these missions have no more than 5 targets you need to deal with
That's fucking lame
>>
>>583170417
>This string of great missions is a real slog

>>583169991
ace combat X is one of the best in the series and also has Time Limit which is the funniest joke that an AC game that isn't Last Raven ever pulled on me

>>583170101
i don't like solitaire because it's followed by closure and having 2 missions on the exact same map makes it feel like more of a slog than it actually is, i think four horsemen is fine personally but the section in the beginning is an annoying time waster and ACES has the same problem with wasting a bunch of time doing nothing when the mission starts if you somehow die but THOUGHTS ENDLESS IN FLIIIIIIGHT DAY TURNS TOOOO NIIGHT redeems it
>>

Did autisming the fuck out of 7 hone me or was 8 less challenging? went with elite from the getgo, and the only thing that pushed my flying a bit was shadow 22 and his goons, and mostly because they got plot flares/dodge (still one and done'd em though)
and moon 11 was fun but felt somewhere in between mihaly and the ravens in terms of how hard you have to push it to contend, but again a one and done scenario.
>>
I can't even tell the difference between the first 8 missions, they're all at night and you bomb stuff on the ground
I really thought with the dlc in 7 they learned what the players wanted, those 3 missions were all 10/10s and the one who made them understood where ace combat shines the most
8 has good missions but so many short filler missions inbetween that you will never replay
>>
>>583170814
Having two SPs is a game changer.
>>
Is there any reason to hold onto Blueprints after rasing the level cap of a plane to 20; or can they be safely sold?

>>
>>583170756
nta i enjoyed those missions as set pieces but no personally i much prefer air to air. annihilation for example is so fucking boring to me, there's little to no resistance. i really just want to dogfight and boss fights are the peak of ace combat for me (except scripted gimmick shit like wings of wax)
>>
Am I ever going to not need ground based missiles/bombs in this? I wanna' dogfight
>>
>>583170838
>they're all at night
there's literally only two that take place at night during the first 8 missions, you people are suffering under some sort of mass psychosis
>>
>>583170814
That and as much as I intended to, my desire to go back and S rank everything on ace is waning hard, I played 7 back to front and did almost all I could or wanted to do in it, I felt desire to get better at it and self challenge, like getting the alternate dialogue with sol squadron and the ravens and doing certain missions in bricks.
>>
So, is 8 better than 5?
>>

Holy shit buddies! If you play through on ace difficulty, S rank every mission and shoot down all named aircraft in the game in one playthrough without stopping or turning the game off. You unlock the X-49 Night Raven and can fly it even in the multiplayer! Abyssal Dision is even there in the secret cutscene where he says, "Hello Rex, I am sublimated into the Ace Combat 3 Electrosphere. You need to destroy all 4 Podarges. 2 are in the water, and 2 will be flying past mid-mission. For the two in the water, it's not enough to shoot all the modules (SAM, AAs etc ) attached to it, it needs to literally explode so just machine gun that shit even if you cant lock on to it

I want my plane game to be LESS focused on characters. The series presentation peaked in X where there are no human faces aside from a few shown in photos during the games rare cut-scenes. It DOES involve allies which are affected by player choices, but those allies are whole units/fleets/squadrons heard on the radio or mentioned in briefings, their relevance is established by their impact on the war, not by showing a pretty face to imprint on the players Limbic System. Yes, I'm autistic, how could you tell?
Zero and 04 had great character writing but it never involved direct face-to-face character iteration, there was an intermediary; in Zero the player watches documentary footage and in 04 the Yellow Squadron story is recounted by the orphan.
The 09 style of 'cinematic' presentation with in-person cut-scenes, and the player controlling an actual human being outside of an aircraft is not a good thing. It is a shift towards catering to the lowest common denominator, chasing wider market appeal via mimicry of more popular mediums and franchises. Not only does this weaken the series identity, it results in less interesting storytelling. The cope-ghost was cool but largely drowned out
Speaking of the story Sunao Katabuchi should be killed, his influence is clear at the low points. There was still an overall lack of focus or a core idea in the writing is similar to 07, but 08 is much better in that regard and others.
