One thing that's kind of clear is that the devs really don't anticipate anything. Chapter 3 comes out and the Smiling Critters become big and that was never anticipated (probably due to them being failures in universe) and when they try to course correct, they fuck up. They try again with Nightmare critters which doesn't lead to the same results in reality and in universe it's kind of weird that they'd extend the toy line that canonically was such a financial disaster the company was in the red and had to start the bigger bodies thing. Sure companies can be retarded but everyone can tell that if Smiling Critters wasn't popular irl they never would have been developed because it's not something they came up with because they had a vision or a story to tell.

This series was ruined when they decided to make chapter 3 "scarier" at the expense of the actual gameplay and atmosphere the series had up until that point, then clueless furfags came in and praised the fuck out of that chapter because it game them new husbandos, cementing that this series would forever go down the direction that has lead us where we are now. Didn't help that at the same time all the people who made the first two good chapters, Project, and the only good characters that came later (Doey and Sawyer) all left and subsequently had everything they made thrown in the trash by their spiteful former coworkers.
