In hindsight, I think the reason Canto 9 was so timid about the more explicit stuff surrounding birth and motherhood is that Ryoshu is more than likely a product of some form of rape (and I'm not saying this to be funny). Shiomi literally only has negative things to say about the circumstances surrounding Ryoshu's birth, and the fact that she looked entirely out of it when first properly seeing Ryoshu (to the point where Rien basically had to "lead" the introduction to her own kid) doesn't paint a particularly good picture.
