When MTL is of significantly below average quality, using it would cut into your bottom line and engender social controversy and so on, so it was used in only limited capacity. That's what has mostly machine-assisted translation holed away into mass agencies doing cheap work rather than front-facing media translation for books and games. What happens as soon as MTL is on par with a random given human? Not the best human to ever translate, but just about equaling 10 humans randomly selected from a sample of 100. Well, suddenly, everything starts to break down bit by bit. Translation tests meant to select for quality no longer work because MTL returns results equivalent to an average professional. Unaware consumers will no longer stir up controversies because they literally can't tell whether something is MTL or not. It becomes a betting game to hire a translator; it's good for you if they're above-average, but what if they're below-average? It's not uncommon for people to cheat on their TL tests; I saw a guy pass with glowing colors then immediately get fired because he barely understood English (his Japanese was fine) and his output was unusable in practice. Human-level MTL, meanwhile, is pretty consistent; a Sol quality TL will always be, let's say, 50th percentile instead of dipping sometimes into the single-digit percentile. What confuses me is why people, especially some industry professionals, seem locked into thinking "AI is only good when its output is utterly flawless and beyond reproach." It doesn't need to be THAT good. Just good enough.

Even in the mid 2010s, when VNs were dying in Japan, VN TL publishers could do fairly well with their releases on Steam, you can go back and look at early steam releases to see the difference in the amount of reviews etc. compared to 2026. So there are other factors, at least in the western scene, that are leading to the decline of interest in the average steam/VN release. For insight on that in the games industry typically for every 5 purchases, you have 1 person pirate your game, but in the visual novel industry for every purchase, you have 5 people who torrent the game. You look at the number of downloads compared to sells and see that you have 1,000 sells versus 5,000 downloads and it’s tough to not get disheartened by the whole thing.

Looks like I caused the issue since the patch couldn't be applied in the original install folder (files were set to read-only, even changing to admin rights didn't work), so I copied the folder to a different directory, applied patch, but then registry entry didn't work or something. Now I just reinstalled everything directly to new directory and it works. Right-click context menu is still Japanse (not the actual menu).
