The issue with mining/smithing is a much deeper problem that affects several aspects of the game: PvM is too rewarding and renders everything else obsolete. Why bother training gathering and artisan skills when you can get the same things in bulk from boss drops? It's especially less relevant for mains, because they can just buy everything from the GE, but even ironmen don't have to really bother with it when they are ready to start bossing. Smithing gets hit the hardest by this problem because all the best armour in the game is dropped by bosses and the best range ammo is usually dragon-tipped (which is also obtained through PvM rather than smithing).
i have some genuinely good ideas how to fix smithing but jagex will never listen so im not even gonna bother talking about them
