>>583648567
It's considered suboptimal because it doesn't attack the center, and weakens the Kingside. However, it works because players get distracted attacking that pawn, or because they cannot develop their King's Knight to f6. In many cases, you end up exchanging that pawn for one of Black's central pawns, so it's just fine. Stockfish already gives 1 of advantage to Black, but it doesn't matter much if you're opponent doesn't respond correctly, which they rarely do. Basman has written entire books about it.

I feel like, if anything, they're an advantage in the 1200-2000 range online, cause people are so used to the usual ruy/italian/qg/e5/sicilian/french/caro lines that an unorthodox opening (as long as it's not completely retarded) throws them off and they start dropping pieces left and right.

But unironically, I've seen strong players analyze Stjepan's opening videos and they point out many mistakes. The problem is that he doesn't truly understand the openings because he isn't strong enough to. He's just vomiting out engine lines without deeper understanding
>>
>>583709989
That’s fair criticism, but “just vomiting out engine lines” is probably overstating it. You can have inaccurate analysis while still understanding the general ideas of an opening. Engines also routinely find moves that even very strong players wouldn’t naturally understand at first glance. The real question is whether the explanations hold up when you go beyond the engine line.

>>
>>583709309
>top engine move still has white's winning percentage at 56%
Curious, it's almost like the morra has positional compensation even when black thinks they're doing good

It’s absurd how smug cheats are. Playing instantly and then not even studying the game after. It’s not even educational cheating, they’re really like “Yeah, I just did that”
Online chess is 100% cooked purely because there are way too many subhumans in the world
>>
Yeah, the smugness is honestly the most annoying part. At least if someone cheats to learn, you could argue they’re trying to improve. Playing engine moves instantly and then acting like you actually calculated all of it is just delusional. Online chess really does bring out the worst in people.

>>583748249
COPE. Stockfish evaluates the position after 19. Qd3 as 0.0. I was fine even without him blundering his knight
>>
>>583748693
The flat 0.0 eval usually means there’s a perpetual or some crazy engine line requiring absolute best play for multiple moves from both sides. But even in the double-edged lines the swings are potentially much worse for black, I guess because it likes your active king if the queens come off and the semi-open f file especially if he castles kingside. It’s an interesting position my bad.

Well it’s definitely not losing. Which is part of its utility. I got Esserman to admit he would use it in certain situations in tournaments on stream. But he said “of course I don’t you guys to know that,” because his audience might take it the wrong way and think they should main it. And playing for a draw in 1500 games is just pathetic, let’s be honest.

There are two primary ways of playing the Caro: very aggressively, or for a winning endgame.
Aggressively entails manuevering your knights to pry open the center and play for an attack, usually forgoing castling, like here https://lichess.org/study/15UjJXyn/82IdoV3a
And playing for an endgame entails maintaining your strong central pawn chain and spending most of the game trying to advantangeously liquidate.
Both cases require active play and a knowledge of what you’re doing.

Where someone like you who isn’t familiar with the Caro can go wrong is by just playing it passively. You just kind of hide behind the pawn chain, trade when your opponent wants, don’t press in the endgame correctly for the structure and the game is totally static.
>>
>>583835839
>Caro
>Can be played very aggressively
None of the game in the study are the 3. Nc3 mainline. c6 is a waste of a tempo, if black wants a semi-closed position with actually aggressive winning chances they should play the French
>>
>>583835839
>spending most of the game trying to advantangeously liquidate
I've noticed Caro Chuds are obsessed with trading. I once had a blitz game where a Caro Kucky gave up an entire piece just to trade queens. I guess some retard on YouTube told them that every end game is winning? Truly, playing the CK is a mental illness.
>>
>>583841782
Generally speaking the Caro is better in the endgame, yes. That’s one of the reasons Capablanca loved it. So trading down is a viable stragegy. But just trading pieces willy nilly isn’t. That’s why I specified “advatangeous”. You have to know which pieces and when.

the first day of the first game of the 39th Ryuo title match is being played, between Sota Fujii (sente, the Ryuo title holder) and Shinichiro Hattori. The time control is 8 hours per player over two days, and the match is a best of 7. These two players met earlier this year in the Kisei title match, which Fujii won 3-0.
The opening was double static rook. Instead of playing into a mainline opening, Hattori played the Murata system (which Fujii has also employed as gote before).

You arbitrarily eliminated smaller countries from consideration. India had 894 games and NL had 51 games. NL was actually vastly overrepresented compared to its population.
51/894 = 0.0570, while the population ratio of the two countries is 0.0123.

>>
>>583920972
do i really need to spoonfeed you how to interpret the stats?
>high raw number of games/abandons
players are more likely to encounter someone abandoning from this country
>high percentage of abandons
this country has proportionally more abandoners (but vulnerable to accuracy issues at low population numbers, hence filtering to countries with at least 100 games)
india is at or near the top in both lists so it doesnt really matter which way you want to look at it brownoid
>>
>>583921461
thanks, so the answer is yes. i don't see the point of mentioning that at all then, it seems rather irrelevant to the grander idea of disliking indians. unless you're misrepresenting yourself.
>>
>>583922034
come back when youre over 100 iq then maybe you'll be able to understand
>>
>>583921461
>india is at or near the top in both lists so it doesnt really matter which way
/argument
Imagine if jeets spent even a quartier of the energy they waste defending their behavior and country on improving both instead, india might not be the worst shithole on the planet and jeets wouldn't be so universally despised
>>
>>583922153
i think i understand what you're doing quite well. it seems meaningless to bring up that statistic unless you intend tor people to not pay attention to your post and think that is relevant
>>
>>583923445
it is relevant, ask anyone (honest) about their experience against cheaters, time wasters, and abandoners on chesscom and it's basically a guarantee they'll have india and indonesia in their top 3 worst offenders. anecdotal evidence yet the real evidence agrees, they are most likely to encounter these (based on raw numbers)
whether they do it proportionally more than other countries rather than just having a higher population is another question, and the answer is also yes
in conclusion we need a chess site where only trve europeans are allowed, no thirdie brownoids or mystery meat mutts

Tin foil hat time. Nothing was smoked before writing this post. Also for the record, I am a beginner, started playing 6 months ago and am rated ~1000 lol. My theory is that the goal of the matchmaker is to keep your win rate at 50%, but the way it tries to do so is dumb and frustrating to experience as a player. I have noticed that this happens in “streaks” where if I start winning too many games in a row, I’ll get hit with a big magical loss streak to balance out the scales. The “how” goes deeper though and what I find annoying. For example, when I was playing 1e4 I would play the scotch, and would generally win with it. But then I started winning too much, so to “test” my rating the matchmaking algorithm pitted me against openings / opponents that it assumes I’d lose against. Instead of the standard 1e5 response from black, I’d get a “streak” of Caro Kans and get wrecked. So I learn a response to that, start kicking captain caro booty and then poof no more. Then back to the standard response, back to my old peak rating. Oopsie we can’t have that, too many wins there, let’s give him a streak of gambit crack heads rated 150 points lower that memorized their one little line. -10, -11, -12… Recently I switched to 1d4 and cruised past 1000 elo no problem. But chess.com obviously didn’t like that, so it stopped giving me people who play the standard openings, and then put me on the englund gambit pipeline. What are the odds that 5/10 games as white were that opening, but as soon as I learn the refutation to it, bye bye no more. And the cycle continues. I understand that it could be a way to subtlety teach you how to respond to different openings and improve, but the experience is super annoying. Since it feels “artificial” and "rigged". It’s statically improbable that you’d see the “streaks” so my theory that it’s intentional to keep your rating at 50%. Anyway, has anyone else had this experience?

I only read 1/5th of your post but you are correct. If you stay in the matchmade queue at 14-1600 you will stay there forever. >The Alekhine Defense is highly underrated
>I’m just over 1700 on lichess. So I’m no master, but I am top 30 percent of players on the platform.
>I play the Alekhine exclusively against e4. My win rate with it is 74 percent
>white has no idea what they’re doing against the Alekhine. They want to play Ruy Lopez, and against Alekhine’s they can’t. They’ve probably almost never seen it, so we’re in my territory now.
>At the human grandmaster level, it’s also underrated. Alekhine himself won the majority of his games with it. Fischer also won the majority of his games with it, including a draw and a win against Spassky.
>If you’re not a grandmaster though, this is actually a huge advantage. If White wants to play a traditional center control strategy and you bait them into overextending their pawns in an opening that is likely unfamiliar to them, you will usually win.
>Alekhine was a genius. Please try out his highly underrated opening defense as black. Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

In other Shogi news, Tomoka Nishiyama has become the first female professional player after winning the Hakurei title for the fifth time. In June, the Japan Shogi Association decided that winning the title five times would allow the holder to become a full professional. Previously, Nishiyama qualified qualified for the professional transfer exam (a series of five games against 4-dan professionals), which she lost 2-3.

I was thinking... what if we do a tournament the day after Thanksgiving but all the starting positions are meme openings?

Like, each game starts as like a Bongcloud or a Borg and stuff like that.

Does Lichess have the capability to do different starting positions within the same tournament?

I think it could be fun and would get more people since it's a unique set up, not just a normal 5-man tournament

Have you guys heard about when Kramnik played the grob?
>>
Gukesh has totally different prep for his wc title match than what we’ve seen of his current dog fighting style the last two years. I think he’s just practicing his fighting skill in complex positions so that he’s got reps of it. He’s training. He’s not disappointed in his results, he’s playing to experiment and to learn.
Do you see him crying about it? Storming away from tables? He’s been more stoic than Epictetus. None of these things matter if he wants to keep his crown. Tournaments, elo, ranking. Just numbers and he doesn’t care.
Caring too much about these things is exactly what stopped Magnus and Hikaru and Ding from competing. And when they stopped competing instead getting worked up about failing, their skill declined. Rust set in. Self confidence fell short. What’s Gukesh done instead? Competed relentlessly and pushed non pep lines to their aggressive limit. He doesn’t give a shit about winning elo. He’s training for the title fight.
When the WC match comes, the training weights come off and Gukesh is going to stop pulling his punches. We’ll see Gukesh bring solid openings into well prepared side lines. Then he’ll have complex positions and all the mental acuity to solve them.

I have been playing 2+1 on lichess. When I used to play it a few years ago I could barely get to 2200, but now I got to 2370 the first day. Did it get easier or am I just better?
It used to be that the 2+1 time control was harder to gain rating in, so whenever I would lose rating in 2+1 I would play a few 1+0s to get it back. Don't know if that's still the case.

This is what I don't want. I've also had a thought about having a separate mini board for the kings to move on to spend tempos or whatever without being on the main board but I guess that would ruin the pawn vs pawn theme if either side could use a tempo whenever they wanted? idk I'm basically retarded and trying to become less so. I want to break things down into their constituent parts so I can understand them without having to figure things out with so many moving parts.

I'll never forget the first time I played in an OTB tournament and played a gentleman named L'Jarius.
He tried to move his knight like a rook and got disqualified.
He had to be escorted out by security. Kept turning around and trying to get at me and shouting, "Come see about me! Come see about me!" I had no idea what that meant so I just tried looking at him placatingly. But eye contact just made him shout more. I was 9 at the time.
He had a lot of intimidating friends with him who kept telling me, "You done did it now... Uh huh, you done did it now boy." But fortunately I never saw them again.
It was clearly his first time playing. He brought a little container of cheez-its and seemed all set to go. His friends were standing at the back of the room rubbing their hands incessantly and emitting at intervals "Uh huh!" and "You know what time it is!" The arbiter shushed them like thirty times over the course of our three move game.

The way I build my repertoire is playing through certain lines in analysis, guessing what my opponent would be most likely to play and memorizing the best responses, rather than just memorizing pure book theory which is rarely useful in online amateur chess. It’s not hard at all to foresee the average online player’s most likely replies, they are extremely ABC and predictable, and a big part of that is because of the ego they always involve in their game. If you dare them to take a piece with ideas of your own compensation, they will usuallu do so without hesitation, because they refuse to respect you. Same if you give a poisoned pawn. They don’t buy it, and they’re taking it, because fuck you. So I have a bunch of lines memorized specifically for people like this that think they’re original thinkers and impressive with their effortless intuitive play

So far I have beaten four 2400s in 2+1 bullet, and in three of the four I was playing as white against the Philidor, playing the g4 gambit line.
It's the Philidor killer, simple as.

Many such cases ..

That being said, they do seem incredibly under-booked. It's like they try to play it as a system opening against 1.e4, but that's not really possible lol

There is an obscure schizo conspiracy theory that the top players aren't actually very strong and protect their inflated ratings by only playing each other in invite-only tournaments, and that Magnus is the ring leader who inherited the "pre-arranged matches" scheme that Bobby Fischer schizo'd about from Kasparov, and top players understand when invited to these tournaments that they are expected to let Magnus win. Probably what schizo anon is referring to
>>
>>584238841
That's stupid.
Plenty of GMs playing on both chesscom and lichess public games and if you get high enough rating you can randomly face them.

If queen takes bishop:

Bishops = war elephants (that... jumped? the shogi silver general move used in the eastern half of India made a lot more sense)

Not to mention all the events like world cup, olympiad, grandswiss and various major opens where super GM play against weaker opposition
Or guys like Verygaysir and alireza who farmed a ton of points in the opens then lost them when they started getting invitations to top events
It's really a retarded theory
>>
>>584238841
There's a grain of truth to that when it comes to the very topmost top players. Not that they aren't strong but that their ratings might be a little inflated due to just playing amongst each other, and if they consistently played weaker GMs their ratings would all go down.

I don't know where else to ask but I got into this position. I checked the king to take the queen in a fork. Why is pulling the bishop back the better move?
>>
>>584301094
If you set stockfish to give multiple lines you'll see Bb3 and Nxc6 to pretty much have the same centipawn evaluation. It's just engine fuckery, taking the pawn and queen while he takes your bishop and knight is a +4 material advantage while moving the bishop back will also lead to similar lines that cause a +4 material advantage. Nxc6 is practically the best move on a human level so don't worry about it

Simply git gud. Alapenis completely disappears above 2000 Elo because it has positional flaws that a 2000+ Black player will exploit.

Either go study a book like a nerd or play vs Stockfish followed by 100 Blitz games to fully understand the system.

It’s ok if chess is just not your thing

Chess is just a game.

I’ve played chess since I’m a child and started playing online a few years ago. I started doing lessons for a year, watching video trying to understand the game, openings, strategies and all.

And here we are : I’m still stuck at 500 elo for more than two years ! Every time I move a peace I forgot every basic rules, I can’t process all informations that I need to, I’m definitely not capable of thinking after the next move, and all of that IS OK.

Because chess is just a game ! Yes if you play on chess.com you’ll have to be put into an elo but who cares ? That’s just a number ! As long as you still have fun, the number associated to your account shouldn’t be putting too much weight on the balance of your happiness !

Some people might think this is a looser mentality but if that help just one people who struggle, then I have no problem with that :)

So remember : it’s just a game, so just enjoy it even if you fumble
