Objectively, Bookworm is probably superior the superior work of fiction. The author, for example, writes out detailed timelines for each character in each chapter to track their movements and has entire filing cabinets of these various documents so, for example, if you asked her "what was X doing during Y?" she could fish out the timeline and give an example. It is a kind of like measured hard work that results in timeless quality; to use some Tolkien phrasing, it's like a world really was created, and everyone in the world is a living, breathing person one can fully have "secondary belief" in.Personally, I prefer LiL in many ways despite that, though. Bookworm is a very cold, somewhat dry world since it is depicting a more true to life reality, while LiL is specifically rejecting the cold emptiness of life to depict something more idealistic. Playing it loose also lets LiL have a lot of variety, you never know what scene is coming next, scenes end when they stop being fun rather than being forced to have like 15,000 words of political dialogue simply because it's necessary for the plot, blah blah. I guess you could say that Bookworm is like the Pantheon, a peak of human achievement in some ways, yet cold and hard to sleep on the floor. While LiL is like a cozy wooden cottage with a roaring fireplace and tons of furs to sleep in. LiL soothes the soul and is always super fun, while Bookworm can drone on but never fails to impress in ways few works really can. I also just don't really enjoy reading the Bookworm protagonist, but that's purely personal taste. I like Rudeus type isekai protagonists far more.

And to that end Rudeus is a fun protag for me that makes most scenes fun to read.I know it's popular to like Bookworm for the protagonist being weak and sickly, but I don't give it points just for that. Giving points just for aligning with certain conceptual ideas is the "personal taste" I was describing as not wanting to give weight to. Like I get why someone would form this dynamic in their mind of "power fantasy = slop, weak protagonist = based," but I don't particularly hold it. But that's not to say Bookworm has a poor protagonist. She is just aligned with tastes other than mine.
