I'm a returning player. I started playing during 2021 to early 2023, stopped playing for years since then, and only just returned this month. I don't engage with the community much and eventually left it since I stopped playing. Now that I'm back, I mostly lurk for leaks, lore discussions, memes, and fanart like I did before. I'm all caught up in the Archon quest now, so I want to discuss the way the community has been behaving towards the game, story and characters so far.Back then, I remember a lot of complaints and criticisms towards the game ranging from the pacing of the Inazuma Archon quest, how some character designs can be improved, the lack of POC representation in Sumeru (and Natlan, I wasn't playing at this point but still saw what people said about it), etc. Despite all these issues, most people found aspects of the game that they enjoyed and everyone seemed to have their own space to share thoughtful discussions about it.Now, I feel like a lot of criticisms seem to be nitpicking every single thing a character says or does before their intentions behind it are revealed (or has said and done but don’t anymore), or are coming from misinformation that could be resolved with reading just a few lines of dialogue in the game, or are coming from disappointment that their unconfirmed expectations weren't met. It's good to have discussions about Hoyo's writing and I agree with some of these criticisms, but a lot of it turns into shitting on people who want to enjoy the story or have something positive to say about it. Even people who are neutral about the story or are just telling others to wait for it to end and hope it gets better are getting shit on. I don't understand being so hostile over a difference of perspective and interpretation of the story and its characters. The issues raised from these criticisms aren't even worth getting that emotional over to be honest, but that's just my opinion. Personally, the issues in the story and writing isn't enough to make me hate the game - but I'm not saying you can't be upset about a game that you care about. I've felt that way about other games too, but if I'm having such a hard time enjoying a game because I can't overlook the things I don't like about it, then I just stop playing and leave the community. It genuinely feels like the biggest haters of the game are the ones who are still playing it or are staying in the community just to get mad at people who enjoy it. Back then, the community felt more united against people who knew nothing about the game and were making awful assumptions about it. Now, the community feels like it welcomes those people into the fandom which makes it a lot less enjoyable to be in.I genuinely don’t understand what happened in the past 2-3 years that I stopped playing. I know 2-3 years is a long time but the changes in the community seem like so much to me. The community back then wasn’t perfect either and there were types of fans I didn’t like, but at least Genshin-related topics that showed up in my feed weren’t constant arguments and negativity. I can’t even tell if most of the community that are like this are old or new players - probably both. Maybe it’s always been like this and I’ve been lucky not to come across it before. This game has millions of players anyway and this part of the community is probably just the minority - but it's a very loud minority unfortunately. I’m doing a lot to manage my social media feeds to only include accounts and discussions that are actually fun or meaningful, but it’s exhausting.
