I'm playing Dragon Age Origins for the first time (not counting that one time I played it as a kid around the time it came out but I honestly don't remember anything about it) and it's really made me appreciate Owlcat even more. The test is whether it tries to recreate tabletop play, not whether it copies every rule. I consider it a CRPG, and anyone who thinks about it with an apt mind will come to the same conclusion. Max mentions a deep fear and foreboding in her presence that he can't quite put words too, and can hardly remember meeting her at all.
A nearby camera confirms it - a strange woman, heavily pregnant, wandering around dark alleys in the middle of the night and in a snow storm. Something about seeing her makes Fabien's hair stand on end, and he's literally a vampire. The victim was a biker, mortal, so big it took four men to lift him off his pose, and unlike the others no relation to anybody dead that we know of. Only thing connecting it back to kindred was the choice of location for displaying the body.
Benny dipped soon as he saw the victim wasn't one of ours, but there's something clearly supernatural and Masquerade-violating going on here. Clean it up officer.
We had back to the station to look for files on pregnant women, strange cases of memory loss, maybe related to the times and places of our prior cases. Fabien talks to the cabinet, really just his thought process going through the files, and we find a few connections, and all people we know. Throughout the game, each Fabien section (at least in the modern day) has several of Fabien's familiars peppered around the city, various people he knows and drinks from regularly. As we talk to them we get more info, but this is one of those 'layered narrative' moments that I really enjoy, there are all sorts innocuous seeming things about these characters that seem so much more significant on a second or third playthrough, when you finally have a bit more context than Fabien and Phyre do. The first of several big "aha!" moments in the story. It's a pity so few were able to experience and enjoy it the right way, because despite all the flaws and warts it really is well done.

But she remembers treating a pregnant woman now, who 'didn't want me to see her'. She also freely offers us blood, and we are thirsty after all this dementation, so yeah why not. It only occurs to me after that she isn't really a ghoul and maybe shouldn't know all that.
Another visit to the records room lets us triangulate onto St. Stephen's church. I'll admit that the game has too many instances, especially in Fabien's sections, where you have to go from X to Y and back to X again just to say a few words. This would have been better handled by just having Fabien piece things together in his mind when he had all the puzzle pieces, which he basically does anyways.In any case, the same church we were ambushed in a few days later in Phyre's body, now connected to a string of murders that are themselves connected to a hunter or cell of hunters. If I had made the game, there would have been an option here to at least call in Benny for some backup given that Fabien isn't a fighter, that would have been the more appropriate RP option. But I guess all CRPGs have these sorts of railroad funnel-back-to-the-story moments, so we'll go in and investigate the scene ourselves. Isaac floated the idea that the killings and the hunter were connected back to the Society of Leopold back in the 1920s, so maybe not some random goof with a pistol.
The church is as empty as one might expect at this time of night, save for the sudden appearance of a Lasombra, who I'm sure is only here to get her unlife back on track. Not exactly the human hunters we might have expected. Onda confirms that a pregnant woman is here, down below, and apparently had some connection to her as she threatens to fist our asshole if we cause her any harm or distress. She gives us a name - Misty - and claims she's had terrible things done to her, but won't elaborate.
Our subject appears out of a mist, and already knows our name. Pregnant, eerie voice. Dark enough to possibly be black, but with straight hair, so I think she's probably Mexican. But one of those really native/aztec ones, not the Spanish kind.
She's not the most coherent woman in Seattle, but we can determine a few things about her - she's kindred, Malkavian, pregnant at the time of her embrace, more familiar with me than I am with her. She claims to have seen the killer but isn't the killer herself, and a quick check in her head confirms that, but there's something off about her and not in the malkavian sense. Embracing a pregnant woman isn't something people usually aim for but it has been done, and the result is usually something different than this. Something else has been done to her.
Something she says sends us further back, same basement of the same church, standing over her covered in blood and with the recently crucified sheriff with us. So we did know her at some point. Why couldn't we remember? A real vampire mystery.
We know from poking around his head at the New Year's party that the now final-deceased sheriff was worried about and looking out for some girl, Misty apparently. She was pregnant with the child of John Campbell, Lou's ghoul and future Prince of Seattle.

I'm seriously thinking about using a dog in DAO because all the companions are so fucking awful. I went through the entire Dwarven questline thinking that at least their companion wouldn't be too bad, but he's terrible. Any modern developer would be hung from the rafters if they released a companion DLC as bad as Shale.

Unfortunately outside of that single quest, which is a highlight for any other mythic path, Devil feels extremely bare bones and rushed; I hope you liked the council meetings because that's all you're getting.Be warned that since you're switching from Azata there is a chance Mephistopheles will fuck you over if you didn't follow his advice previously.Mechanically it's pretty meh, you get a couple of spells to cast at will, namely Hellfire Ray, Power Word Stun, Power Word Kill and Overwhelming Presence. If you built your character around those then it's pretty good, but nothing exceptional. You also get Decrees, which are buffs with conditions, for example you give a big bonus to attack and damage to an ally, but you lose control of them. There is a pretty hilarious thing you can do with Devil because there is a series of Decrees that give you big bonuses to 1 school of magic while preventing you from casting spells from all the others for a single combat, you can use this on enemies to basically neuter their entire spellbook by choosing something like Divination, this is really good vs the final boss for example.
Demon is the only evil mythic path where you aren't someone's bitch. Though I guess if you choose the Nocticula simp path then that counts.
