it could also be a case where a baked in environment has model overlays that have LOD's, like in the case of something like Mario kart having crowd's that function the same, when they are out of view they don't need to animate/be rendered.quite a number of games use multiple parts with baked in models to create depth and details, in nova's case it'd be lights, machine detailing (wires, cogs, switches, etc) it wouldn't be a single model that would make up Nova as a race course and some of it would be 2D images.think of it like each section as a enclosed room/portal, each section would have it's own job to do to create the illusion, put it all together and you get the sight of going through a massive machine race course with lasers shooting nova with that planet, going inside and seeing all the twisting paths along the way to finally destroying the heart.game development on having to deal with all of that is tricky business.
