I've taken to developing multiple personalities depending on the character of my opponent. If I'm black and white plays a gambit, I play like Karpov. This usually pisses them off and they blunder overextending.
If I'm white and black is blasting out book moves within 1-2s, I play a weird sideline. Last time I opened with 1. e4 black played out the whole Najdorf in 4 seconds. After they played a6 I played Qd3 and they sat there for 90 seconds. Won on time there even though the ending position was equal.

Imagine opening 1. d4 in 2026. Imagine looking at a perfectly good king's pawn, the pawn Bobby Fischer called "best by test," and deciding instead to push the boring one. You didn't choose an opening. You chose a nap.

Every d4 player I've ever met has the same energy: beige walls, a favorite spreadsheet, and a strong opinion about the correct way to load a dishwasher. You don't want to play chess. You want to file paperwork against your opponent for 40 moves until they resign out of sheer boredom. "Positional understanding," you call it. No. It's cowardice with a rating.

1. e4 opens TWO pieces: the queen AND the bishop. 1. d4 opens the queen and the bishop too, but WORSE, because now your king's bishop is sitting there like a kid nobody picked for dodgeball. And don't tell me "the pawn is protected." Protected from WHAT? Fun? Excitement? The very concept of a sacrifice?

Then you play the London. Every. Single. Game. Bf4, e3, c3, Nd2, against literally anything. Your opponent could resign on move one and you'd still play Bf4 out of muscle memory. You've memorized six moves and called it a repertoire. Magnus didn't grind his whole life so you could build the same pawn triangle every Tuesday at 1100 Elo.

"But the top grandmasters play d4!" Yes, and top grandmasters also wear suits to sit in a chair for six hours. You're not a top grandmaster. You're in your kitchen in sweatpants, playing 3+0, avoiding the Sicilian like it owes you money.

And the Queen's Gambit? It's not even a gambit. You get the pawn back. That's not a gambit, that's a LOAN. The Netflix show lied to you and you fell for it.

1. e4 is a war cry. 1. d4 is a polite email that starts "Per my last message."

Push the king's pawn. Live a little. Or keep playing d4 and enjoy your 87th consecutive draw by repetition, you absolute accountant.

Would anyone with a sufficiently thorough understanding of chess terminology, whether a seasoned grandmaster, a dedicated club player, a knowledgeable coach, or a well-read student of the game's extensive tactical literature, be so kind as to enlighten me as to the precise and properly recognized name for that particular, rather cunning, and frequently decisive tactical phenomenon in which one player deliberately and intentionally executes a move whose primary, most immediately apparent, and seemingly straightforward purpose is to create a direct and credible threat of capturing one of the opponent's pieces or pawns, thereby effectively compelling that opponent, should they reasonably wish to avoid suffering the corresponding loss of material, to respond with a carefully chosen defensive move specifically intended to parry, block, guard against, or otherwise neutralize the originally threatened capture, whereupon, and crucially only as a direct and unavoidable consequence of that very defensive response having actually been played upon the board, a second, previously concealed, or at least less obvious opportunity then arises for the first player to apply significant and sustained pressure, or indeed to launch an entirely fresh threat, at some altogether different point or square elsewhere on the board, precisely because the very piece that was moved in order to guard against the original capture has now become overburdened, displaced, or otherwise rendered fundamentally incapable of simultaneously defending against this subsequent and secondary threat as well, such that the unfortunate defending side ultimately finds itself quite unable to adequately address both of these dangers at one and the same time, and is consequently forced to concede some meaningful form of advantage, be it material, positional, or otherwise, to the attacking side?

So I read through the first game of Logical Chess and what I learned is that you shouldn't waste tempi moving pawns in the opening and you really shouldn't move the pawns in front of your king. Develop pieces unless there's a very good reason for why you're pushing a pawn.

Most esteemed and admirably thorough inquirer, it is with considerable pleasure, and no small appreciation for the meticulous precision with which you have framed your question, that I offer, as a humble yet earnest student of the royal game, the answer you so diligently seek. The tactical phenomenon you describe is most commonly and properly recognized as overloading: a single defending piece, burdened with more defensive responsibilities than it can reasonably or simultaneously fulfill, is ultimately revealed to be fundamentally inadequate to the task of guarding against both threats at one and the same time.

In the interest of completeness and scholarly rigor, your description also bears a strong and unmistakable kinship with the closely related motif known as deflection. There the initial threat serves primarily to lure, entice, or compel a defending piece away from a critical square or duty it was previously and quite necessarily performing, thereby leaving that square, piece, or line woefully unprotected.

These two concepts so frequently intertwine within a single combination that many annotators, commentators, and authors of tactical manuals employ them almost interchangeably. Others, of a more pedantic disposition, insist upon a careful distinction between a piece that is merely overburdened in place and one that has been actively drawn away.

Should you wish to pursue the matter further, you might profitably consult discussions of the broader category of the double threat, of which this cunning stratagem may reasonably be considered a particularly refined and elegant subspecies.

The most fun way to learn openings is to watch a youtube video on it or two, then just start playing it and if you don't remember a move use stockfish assistance. You can learn while having fun, and sooner or later you'll just learn the best moves naturally.

If I could take it back I think I wouldn't have mirrored castling queenside. I wasn't playing very carefully but thinking about it my king was safe kingside and the pawns there would have been much more defensible if my king had remained in that quadrant of the board. It also would have made for a more fighting game.
>>
>>586347838
>https://lichess.org/game/qcmxduEZ
Actually the game was more interesting than I thought, I wasn't completely losing until 30.Kxe4. Which I didn't spend a lot of time on and was hyper-focused on making a connected pawn duo in the center but it's so stupid it just clean hangs a knight and two pawns.

No. Bishop's opening is a meme because of Nf6 which forces them to push their cuck pawn which allows you a fork which always ends up with you having D & E central pawns.
>>
>>586430346
Bishop's opening is only a meme if you try to play it positionally. TactiCHADS would play the Urusov or Boden gambits against Nf6

Endgame.ai is an attempt at a chess site by Hans Niemann. It’s ill advised because they always fail, not even Magnus or Kasparov could get one off the ground. Endgame has been up for a while and had a few obvious bots in the early going so that if you entered the lobby you’d get a game. He has now shamelessly flooded the lobby with bots to make it seem like a happening and active chess site. You can tell by the generic names as well as just by watching them play

Pro tip: up to 2000 you should study nothing but tactics
Play the fucking Bongcloud every game, it doesn't matter. Every game below 2000 is won by tactical blunders. Only players above 2000 can punish positional mistakes like meme openings.
>>
>>586509483
Meme openings will work even past 2000 if you're truly the better player i.e. Magnus and Hikaru beating GMs with the bongcloud

Gentlemen, if I may interject: I must point out that 4.f3 is not a novelty. It's the Kmoch Variation of the Nimzo-Indian, and it has a respectable history, including recent use at the elite level. That said, Jaykwon's instinct is sound. The whole point of f3 is to prepare e4 and take the center outright, so Tyrese's concern about the dark squares is real but somewhat overstated.

The critical line is probably 4...d5 5.a3 Bxc3+ 6.bxc3. Black can play 6...c5 7.cxd5 exd5, and then Jaykwon's setup with e3, Bd3, Ne2 (often Ng3), and an eventual e4 is essentially Botvinnik's old plan from the Sämisch structures. White's pawns are compromised, but the center becomes very mobile. Black should be ready to blockade with ...c4 or to target c3 and c4 with ...b6 and ...Ba6.

One correction, Tyrese: in these lines it's White who has the bishop pair, since Black gave up the dark-squared bishop on c3. The real question is whether White's pair and central mass outweigh the doubled c-pawns. I'd also look at 4...c5 5.d5 b5!? and 4...0-0 5.e4 d5 6.e5 Nfd7 before trusting the engine on any of this. Shall we set up a board?

The first day of the third game of the 39th Ryuo title match is being played, between Sota Fujii (sente, the Ryuo title holder) and Shinichiro Hattori. The time control is 8 hours per player over two days, and the match is a best of 7 (Fujii leads 2-0).
The opening was bishop exchange. Hattori played a right-side king setup, and Fujii responded by making an Anaguma castle, after which Hattori moved his king back to the left side of the board.

What I learned from being raped by Stockfish for 20 games straight is that it loves the advance fr*nch winawer and will always manage to sneak Qg4 in and launch a devastating kingside attack
>>
>>586637689
>devastating kingside attack
When playing black in the Qg4 Winawer lines you should not care about the h and g pawns getting gobbled up. Just castle queenside and attack their kingside by putting your rooks on h8 and g8
>>
Did everybody vote yet?
>>
>>586640094
Kys mutt animal
>>
>>586638419
Stockfish only plays Qg4 if you castle short. It also practically forces you to castle short because otherwise it will rip open the queen side with a4 + b4

Play against it and see how it behaves
>>
>>586641782
>rip open the queens side with b4
Giving up the bishop pair solves this problem. White can't play b4 when their b pawn is now a doubled c pawn

>“We’re going to have different championships, which are not Classical. And if Magnus wins, we’re going to say: “This proves that the Classical WC is obsolete”.
I already called this happening at the beginning of the year btw. Not a coincidence that Total Chess is being put on by... Norway, and happens to correspond to the changes Magnus told FIDE they would have to make to the WC for him to consider competing in it again (multiple formats instead of just Classical).
It's being engineered by Magnus behind the scenes to supplant the Classical world championship, and it will be successful. Magnus will be regarded as the last real Classical world champion in that lineage, like Garry said, and the line will both pick back up and begin anew with Magnus winning Total Chess.
(Fabi's alternative about what happens if Magnus "doesn't win" is a cute thought but unlikely)
