The thing I liked most about Shizune and had me seriously thinking about was how ambitious she was and I was constantly thinking about if I would be able to catch up to her and hold on if I was in Hisao's position. In the end that aspect of her is barely explored and the focus more goes to how her ambition is directionless which is still interesting. Things like her dad seemingly thinking that she is selectively mute and almost resentful towards her goes completely ignored. Her being emotionally stunted with relationships is really interesting and the exploration of that is good, but I would have preferred if that exploration was in how she forms romantic relationships... in our romance VN. When you have the context that the first H-scene is intentionally awkward because Shizune can't think of any other way to express her love it becomes really compelling, but then its just not explored. Hisao being probably the most guarded and thorny about his condition is just ignored. He goes from being scared of Shizune or Misha even knowing he takes pills or has a scar to having no issue by the end. Shizune's route is 20 really good plot points set up with 5 or 6 paid off with 2 or 3 done really well. With how garbage A22 is at actually resolving the plot points it makes you wonder if the good set up was just a fluke or if he really is that bad at keeping track of the threads he laid out. It makes me wish Suriko got handed the plot threads and was the one responsible for writing the route.

Any of you guys know about EuroBrady from YT? He's a clinical therapist who does playthroughs of psychological and narrative games, and gives great analysis and insights on the characters' psyche and behavior as he plays. I really enjoyed his playthrough with Omori and especially DDLC as he gave me newfound details and traits of the characters with significant comprehension that my dumbass self overlooked or was too shallow to understand, which made me wonder if we could suggest him to play KS. I really wanna hear his commentaries and insights on the Katawas; particularly with Rin's and Shizune's route

Hey people. I am a newcomer to Katawa Shoujo and a newcomer to visual novels in general. I played this game these past days, and finished Emi's, Lilly's and Hanako's routes, and so far I love the game/storytelling. I never touch games/media with romantic plotlines at all, like the last thing I watched (still going through it actually) is Monster. But let's say that I got "romantically deprived" this past year, and I felt like I needed this sort of thing in a way. Added a lot of perspective to how I will tackle relationships now. I was wondering, are there any other visual novels out there that go about it the same way, but the cast of characters are all adults? Ideally not with fantasy/sci fi elements.

It's nowhere near being a bad game, I enjoyed it, but it shouldn't be considered a top tier VN like many people think.The characters are good, but the game tries to mask their inadequacies and mild lack of depth using lore reasons, which I can't find myself agreeing with. As for the meta elements, personally I'm not a fan of introducing random meta stuff in games because I see it as a cheap way to make a game appear more interesting than it is. However, DDLC is pretty much all about meta, and the game did it well enough that it gets a pass. Also, the horror elements were kinda edgy and I never really felt scared during the game, at most a bit uncomfortable during some scenes. DDLC is a VN that tries to be more than it is, which gives off the wrong impression to newcomers about what the genre is supposed to be. A VN's purpose is not to tell some grand story, rather its primary focus in my opinion should be on writing compelling, complex characters that you can get attached to. You shouldn't come into a VN with the expectation that its story will constantly change course, get meta, get scary or whatever else, as all these elements in my view ultimately serve as cheap ways of boosting your interest in the game without actually improving the game itself. Other genres are just better for stuff like this, whereas VNs pretty much specialize in having you constantly interact with their characters, and that should be their purpose.This is why I like Katawa Shoujo and how it doesn't try to draw your interest with cheap means. It's a simple game with simple stories that draws you in using not cheap storytelling means but very complex and compelling characters. Would write more but character limit.

If anything I think the game gave me a bad perspective of how relationships should go. Then again I was too young to appreciate it all, nowadays as an adult I'd probably have better takeaways from the routes.
