If Shadamy ever became canon and she actually succeeded in taming him, you’d watch the majority of the fan interest evaporate. Tails is Sonic's Kid Sidekick. Amy is Sonic's Self-Proclaimed Girlfriend. Knuckles is Sonic's Friendly Rival. That is what makes them the Core 4. They are the top three most important relationship dynamics Sonic has as his "social circle", and the most important for highlighting who Sonic himself is as a character. An admirable figure to look up to, whose cool, aloof and too free spirited to ever by tied down by anything, who acts out of whim and what he thinks is right rather than any duty or obligation.

Tails is the second player who follows right by Sonic's side most of the time. Amy has more distance between herself and Sonic and is often left behind or whatever else so she puts more effort into catching up or getting involved i other ways. Knuckles is tied to the lore and worldbuilding so he gets involved when the stakes are a bit higher or there's more going on. If you just want someone for Sonic to talk to and its a very basic simple adventure, Tails is the go-to. If there's a bit more tension or drama in the story outside of Sonic's immediate actions, then that's where Amy shines. And if there's a lot more going on and Emerald stuff or ancient history is the center, then that's when its Knuckles' duty to get involved.

The platforming is good, the Red Star Rings make you explore the stages and unlock even more stages, it has a good amount of content and things to do. I think all of that is enough to make it a great game and one of the best. I would enjoy a hard mode on top of that, like they used to up until Unleashed, though
