I just know people here will know those things better, more than likely, so I bring them up more often. If I say something like “Bashir’s cruel and manipulative nature is partially inspired by Simon Adebisi,” most people here are too young to be aware of what Oz even is to understand what that means. If I say “I want a character that’s cruel, but empty inside and completely materialistic like Ashton from North and South” most people here weren’t even born when that show came out, so they wouldn’t know what that means. Or if I say “Powerful Machine Chariot has a villain based on the main character of Johnny Mad Dog,” most people have not seen that film (nor have I revealed that character yet, to be fair), so most people would not understand what that means.With that said, this is another big issue I have with media criticism and writing in general. Manga, light novels, anime, etc, are all treated as this pariah that you’re not allowed to treat with any sort of seriousness (unless it pushes for a certain political idea that is trendy at the time), but any random fluff American novel is kosher for whatever reason. I know you have this idea in your head that I will just watch any anime thing from 30 years ago, but that’s not true in the slightest. It’s very obvious that there were bad shows back then. Bad adaptations as well. My favorite manga is 2001 Nights, but I strongly dislike the anime because it cuts out basically all of the anthology plots and focuses on the overarching plot. Which is less than 10 percent of the actual story. Or if we’re talking about anime and manga in general, I’m not interested in most of the genre, honestly. But again, that’s not really a thing I find worth singling out, as I’m not really interested in 90% of video games, TV shows, books, etc.With all of this in regards to fighting games specifically, there’s a HUGE elephant in the room that I think people won’t usually acknowledge. Japan is dominant in the fighting game genre.
None of you play KI or MK or any of that. The most discussed western fighting game here is Avatar, a game which even the people promoting it describe as “like a French Bread game” and they use this with a positive connotation. A game based on a cartoon where the staff was forced to watch FLCL for research and is very heavily inspired by Asian aesthetics and cultures. A game that very obviously tries to use the anime artstyle, just sanitized for Americans. You even see this in a lot of discussions of Avatar in general where they’ll say things like “It’s better than your favorite anime” since they want to compare it to that or “This is the best American cartoon” instead of something that more heavily follows western traditions like Dexter’s Laboratory or Ren and Stimpy. Or even if you want to compare it to another show that’s less episodic and has story arcs, just look at Avatar and then look at Justice League Unlimited. The difference is very obvious. Anyway, my point with all of that is that you basically never see people even pretend to discuss Skullgirls as a fighting game they actually play or post tech for MK1 or talk about that new Killer Instinct patch. And most of the posts about indie fighting games are just making fun of how they look or talking about them coming out. Basically no discussion of the tech or webms of matches, nothing like that. People can deny it all they want, but the dominant games are things like Street Fighter, Tekken, Guilty Gear, KOF, etc. Even Virtua Fighter has more traction than something like Killer Instinct on here. We’re at the point where Under Night In Birth Gets more entrants at Evo than Mortal Kombat. A random Discord game from Japan like Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax Ignition has more players in America and entrants in America tournaments than a lot of American made indie games like Scramble Heart City. If they announced Dark Awake or Chaos Code at Evo right now (Korean and Taiwanese respectively, but hear me out),

No one is suffering. No one is being ripped off. The team is being paid. This is the freedom that you are pushing for specifically. The point is this is what I want to make. It’s not about making others happy specifically. If that was the goal, I wouldn’t even be making a fighting game. I’d be making the next wacky roguelike deckbuilder where a bunch of demons make quips about how much they hate Donald Trump, Ben Shapiro, and AI or whatever the current thing is this week.

You may think my approach is strange, but I wager that you still would rather watch XYZ generic anime than some LGBT tumblr parody of the same concept, which is what most indie things are. I've seen this world. I know what it can produce. I know what humans are capable of. I know the evil of humanity since the dawn of time. The fact that I am not constantly bringing it up does not mean I am ignorant of this, I just don't feel the need to talk about it at all times anymore.
Regarding the "average American can't/doesn't/won't read" point, another funny work anecdote. A lot of my coworkers are much younger. I will ask them about books, TV shows, movies, etc, but it's like we're speaking an entirely different language. Which is ironic because a bunch of the guys there speak primarily Spanish and they understand what I'm talking about better somehow. Anyway, a woman asked me what The Heroic Legend of Arslan was about one day whilst I was reading it and I said "A war in antiquity. You know, like the Bible times" and she just looked confused at me because she didn't know anything about the bible at all. Which I just thought was interesting because people refer to the South as the bible belt and it was basically impossible to escape knowledge about Abrahamic religions regardless of if you believed or not when I was growing up. Rugrats had that Passover special and Family Guy dropped edgy jokes about antiquity all the time. I just thought that was common knowledge, so then I said "They don't have TVs or phones, so they fight in the desert all day" and then she understood.Or another time, my manager, I was explaining a situation to her and using a comparison to Lord of the Flies, a book and film that I thought most people were at least aware of, we've read it in like middle school. But she seemed completely confused. Anyway, it's not for these people. It never was. I have no reason to try to appeal to them. I don't think I was being particularly ambiguous. I’ve mentioned more than once that there are a lot of things I find strange about that game or just out of place. I don’t like just copying moves or characters wholesale and changing one thing as a joke. You can just read my scripts or look at any of the things I’ve posted and that’s pretty obvious. Why do you think I ignore all the generic suggestions from people that don’t understand what kind of game this is? That one guy as been asking for modern controls and no one button throws for several months now (as if he would not just keep playing Street Fighter 6 for that). The irony is that if one of my characters was just a wholesale copy of some other character, someone would have surely pointed it out by now and sent the information to the rights holders to get me in trouble. Again, this feels more like a perceived issue than an actual issue. I understand why you may have these concerns, but at the same time, accusations like these don’t really help anything. Of course, this ties into a larger issue. Most of you will still rather engage in whatever lowbrow thing the algorithm told you to hate this week instead of honing your craft or supporting others that make what you like. No one motivates me to proceed on GigaMaidens except me, and that's a lonely hill to be on a lot of the time. No one really nurtured my creative hobbies growing up, just left me to my own devices. So I suppose it's something I'm used to and it makes me a bit creatively volatile. Maybe working on your own all-girl fighting game for longer than Skullgirls has been officially out will make you a bit crazy. I've been working on GM since 2010 but I've had my characters even longer than that, wanting to do something with them but it took me a while to figure out what. Then I decided to make them into games and that turned out to be more than I could chew and I had to expand my skillset in various areas. But I am trying to proceed while fighting burnout and stuff. I like Ninja Turtles and Transformers: Beast Wars. I like the Jak & Daxter trilogy. Not all art made here is bad. Personally I want to learn to draw in a more American comic book style because I like it. I know that I can't make Japanese art because I'm not Japanese, and that's fine, I don't want to make Japanese art. Like Bobby Hill said in the KOTH reboot, we're not making authentic German or Japanese food, we're making authentic Bobby food. That's something to live by. My game universe will be aware of anime tropes, sure, but it isn't the entire identity. It's simply using the parlance of our times.

It is harder to find good western art lately, yes, sure. But I think that's different from saying it doesn't exist.AAA gamedev is compromised, it will never be a source of good material. And indies that imitiate the larger stuff aren't much better. But there are good things being made by us like that Lightspeed Lina game. There are a few indie fighting game devs working on cool projects that I would give a chance. Merfight and that other one are not among them, and of course not, why would they be? Cynical and ugly art, no better than the stuff made by the Schwarzerblitz guy. SG's censorship is one of the strongest arguments against games being art because art is allowed to stand on its own and be the creator's vision.

Man this is just so sad. This was probably the last chance to turn things around. They took so much time for a patch that needed to be a complete 180 but it turned out to be a total dud, it didn’t even manage to fix the PC port. Instead denying the ones suffering from said port from playing entirely.
i like cyclops's theme and animations, thats about ithe can still two-touch people without dark phoenix though, dash cancels being the big buff doesn't make sense when the assists and universal mechanics are all doing the heavy lifting in neutral and pressure, it feels so minor by comparison. he'd make much more sense in a 1v1 game
