It's that way because half the classes have multiple paths they can advance to. Listing the final advancement allows you pick between classes like Archmage and Pop Star, which both descend from the Wizard base class.

Yeah, I don't feel that invested into LaTale, the plot is all over the place, the movement is weird, the lag spikes are nasty and the skill selection is subpar, still gonna play it a bit more, but gonna keep it very casual.

An interesting facet of some classes in this is the ability to use certain defensive skills twice per cooldown. You might have a skill that grants a shield and can be used twice. By "weaving" it between your other attacks properly, you can block two of a boss's attacks instead of just one. already getting burned out by the sheer fucking number of story arcs you have to play through at 200+. And none of them are related to each other whatsoever storywise. I genuinely have no idea why I'm doing any of this, I thought I was supposed to be looking for Iris

it wasn't so bad to start with but each arc is starting to be like, kill 300 enemies then do two 20+ minute dungeons. I'm looking at the guide and I'm seeing that what I thought was the endgame (ascension 9999) is in fact not (there's a SECOND ascension), so I'm kind of bracing myself for like twenty or thirty more pointless story arcs exactly like the ones I've done, and that's "the game". Grind for two weeks through all the past content and then sit at the current level cap for 6 months (probably doing dailies to get gear for the first 4 months) waiting for them to release the next 2 dungeons.

My only hope is that the newbie welcome event (which expects you to ascend on your THIRD DAY of playing) stops at Ascension 1500, so maybe I'm closer than I think to "endgame"

I dislike when grinding is like that desu, feels too much bloat and the grind is just there for the sake of the grind, I might be biased, but Diablo 2/POE do it better in that department, I love getting new shinies and the upgrades feel more noteworthy.
I am "strong" since the day one and it doesn't feel like I am building myself or getting more out of my class, just more raw stats, grinding without a purpose you can strive for, like skills getting wacky effects or your character being able to suddenly do something he couldn't before feels hollow, it's just stat for the sake of stats.

The game is cute and it has some charming areas, but I can't find much will to play it often, think I will just cruise through the early game, complete my class storyline and then try to hunt some drip and pets.

Honestly I played maple like a year ago or some shit and they streamlined a lot of shit. I was surprised how easy the core gameplay loop is to understand. At the end of the day it's still maple but honestly the growth is impressive considering how old the game is. Playing this game when it was new, just like any other MMO, was a great time, lots of people hanging out, talking, partying up and enjoying the world.
I distinctly remember there being a mechanic where you could dig the ground and if you did it in a certain place a worm would swallow you and take you to a secret map (that map is still in the game actually but that's not how you go there anymore)

Since there basically won't ever be another time for me to do this (zero chance /latg/ survives once the MMOD moves on from it), here's a few thoughts made during a brief lark over to the ruins of Project Belos' borderline-secret S1 server.

Unsurprisingly for an incarnation of this title dated back to around ~2009-2010 or so, the progression structure of this server seems far more reasonable compared to the official client. Only five starter classes, what looks to be 2x base rates, no Player Guide or overpowered freebie equipment to speed you through the level climb, Iris Statues need to be found in any given location before you're able to warp to them (necessitating actual traversal around the world), etc, etc.
Everything in the Cash Shop is completely free as well, which is a nice gesture for a server which is borderline impossible to even access, unless you just-so-happen to be in the long-abandoned Discord server for its previous S4 incarnation. It's kind of neat to play dress-up for free, max out your inventory slots straight away, and stack loads of Cash Shop-exclusive +EXP% bonuses until you're approximating a ~10x EXP rate server (although Ely looks to still be 2x, which I can already see as being a problem before long).

That said, while it's mildly interesting to screw around on this ancient version of the game, there's also no denying it is a very melancholic experience.
With how outright cryptic it is to even know about the existence of this S1 server, much less be in a position to access it, there's obviously no one else playing on here. Maybe ~5 people max if I'm being generous.
Apparently certain Skills need to be unlocked through clearing Dungeons, and since this server is virtually single-player, that's obviously not on the table without multiboxing.

Creates a real uncanny atmosphere for what's supposed to be an MMO. Have to imagine this is a similar sort of feel to sampling a single-player WoW server, or something. It's damned unnatural, man.

this is what it feels like, super timegated after reaching cap (235) unless Im just doing something wrong. Login, do my dailies, do my dungeons until they are locked out, I did every zone within my ascension range quests and it barely gave me any levels, and then there's literally nothing else to do unless I want to grind on mobs for hours (lol not happening)

You're supposed to do Burning event from event tab, gives you trillions of exp for milestone and daily quests. Pair that with EXP and Quest Reward potions and picking correct (3/4) difficulties and you have steady experience gain.

I am also done with LaTale at this point and will only return for Saturday photos. I have been waiting for the point it stops just becoming aimlessly one hitting the entire screen of enemies with a single enemy and after 200 levels, it still hasn't happened. There is no challenge, there is no point to running dungeons when the free gear you get is better and you just one hit everything.

More blathering-on about this S1 server, since it's a bit late for me to get started with the official client before you 'lot carry on to other ventures abroad.

Have to say, during the earlier goings when every skill/spell counts, the Skill Combo system is actually somewhat interesting. With how easily monsters can interrupt or even stunlock you if you're not in the middle of an offensive skill, it's important to sequence your attacks correctly in turn, occasionally throwing in weaker skills with shorter cooldowns to assure your chain doesn't drop for long.
Brings a layer of depth to the combat model which modern-day Maple completely ignores, so that's something in this title's favor (at least while it lasts).

After getting a feel for things on my would-be Treasure Hunter, I figured trying out other classes wouldn't go amiss, as I've sorta seen most of what there is to see for Explorer. Especially since TH is just "Explorer Plus", with near-identical copies of the skills you get during your First Job.
Evidently, there's an enhanced version of your base class for each of the five starter picks on this ancient version, letting you have effectively two copies of your base attacking 'kit to rotate cooldowns around. Kind of novel, but obviously not super exciting. Probably should've went Gunslinger on that character rather than Treasure Hunter, in retrospect.

Wizard was next, and I anticipated it taking about as long to make it to Level 80 for her Second Job as it did for my Explorer.
Not even close. Turns out either Explorers deal god-awful damage, or Wizard is just stupidly strong during its early stages (it's probably this one), as it only took a few hours to reach Level 80 on this spellslinger. Neat!

Ended up choosing Bard, since as mentioned before, your choice between Second Job on this client comes down to "do you want to play your First Job again but with higher damage numbers" or "do you want something unique". Pretty obvious pick there.

Bard is a real odd one on this server. Thanks to having unlimited, spammable, nearly full-healing potions via the Cash Shop, its signature Song Heals don't seem to be useful at all; and its supportive capabilities are also kind of irrelevant, seeing as there's like ~2-5 people on this server max. Not exactly gonna be partying-up with anyone here, even if you wanted to.
What is DOES have, however, is the cheesiest grinding method imaginable. Park yourself in a group of monsters, queue-up Evil Song, rock-out with impunity. 10-second channel of constant pulsing damage covering both sides (which can be canceled if necessary), and nearly as long-ranged as Wind Magic in its reach. Very silly, and almost certainly bad for boss encounters, but makes standard grinding a total breeze.

So much of a breeze, in fact, that it removes most of the fun from actually fighting things...! You don't have insane mobility in this version like classes tend to have on the live client, there's no Spell Combos to be had while strumming, and learning Water Magic to spice things up starts to take a while past Level 85 or so, as that's when the EXP curve definitely starts kicking-in.
Interesting to see where Pop Star began, but I'd say I've had my fill of this class already; and truthfully, it feels a waste to commit much time to a server which virtually no one else is playing, novel as it might be. Might raise one more pick to 90 before setting this server down for good.

It is so frustrating that I can't just toss you lads a website link to this place. Or hell, even just a >Discord invite, as not even those appear to be available (despite there literally being no other way to access this server otherwise).
Keeping in-theme with its obvious inspiration, S1 LaTale feels just as different to its Live incarnation as Pre-Big Bang Maplestory does to its respective retail client. Same underlying game at its core, yet vastly different feel and vibe all throughout.
Do suspect some of the same complaints levied towards the official client would also apply to this S1 server, granted. There still isn't much reason to party-up outside of Dungeons, and grinding for grinding's sake remains the primary impetus here. Would make for an interesting comparison piece to round-out the week with if nothing else, were things not the way they were.

Been hesitant towards posting about even playing this server, as I really don't want to come off as someone teasing an unreachable "Classic"-era server like an asshat. But when else would there ever be a chance to talk about something like this, honestly?
If any of (You) are curious on further insight into the oldest version of this title, do let me know, and I'll dig around to see what's-what over on this side of the fence before we all move on to other ventures.

What remains of Project Belos has an extremely odd story attached to it, from what I've gathered. It was never intended to be invite-only, and by all accounts should be 100% dead by this point.

Between early 2023 to early 2025, it operated like any other private sever for a niche KMMO. Had its own website (VERY stupidly taking the domain "latale.org" (yes really)), and its Discord server was readily accessible.
During its run, it hosted a modified version of the S4/Live client with various QoL adjustments made, alongside the highly controversial alteration to strip-out and replace the game's entire OST with various video game remixes (?????). At some point, S1 and S2 servers are added while things are still looking bright.
Suddenly it all dies without warning. Server admin vanishes, website goes down, existing Discord links turn invalid, and the Discord channel itself has most of its subchannels entirely scrubbed (though anyone who was already in it still has access to said channel).

Things remain entirely silent 'til the 12th of April this year, when out of nowhere, the old admin reappears and asks if anyone wants to play again. After getting about ~80 thumbs-ups in response, he apparently starts the S1, S2, and S4 servers back up, with various tweaks made to grant all players unlimited premium currency for the Cash Shop.
The S2 and S4 servers were taken down within a month, leaving only the S1 server remaining (with its OST intact, thankfully). There WAS quite the playerbase for this S1 server at one point judging by what remains of the in-game leaderboards (pic related is a snippet of it), but it's doubtful there's anyone around now. Suspect most of what's recorded here hails from the server's original run, rather than this weird, from-the-shadows rendition.

Level cap looks to be 200, although this isn't something ever intended to be reached, as was common for KMMOs of the 2000s. As such, Ascension does not exist in this version.
Most of what look to be the former veterans of this server (at least once upon a time) appear to hover around the ~165-180 range for (presumably) endgame, although it's safe to assume the majority of this server's old playerbase was considerably lower level than that.
Second Job comes at Level 80, Third Job at Level 140. Subclasses are a thing, as is evidenced by the Ranking Board snippet shown above, but I'm uncertain when they become available.

There is also an extremely jank prologue sequence after character creation, showcasing Iris facing down some horrible fiend. It is not great, but quite sovlful in its own way.

It's more common than you think actually, specially nowadays, the first CoH pserver started as a discord only serb, DMO had a few discord only pservers due to GameKing shutting down most of them.
A few Runescape 3 and Neverwinter nights also worked that way.
With how trigger happy Activision is nowadays with their C&Ds, I believe most of the worlo servers will move fully to discord instead of hosting their own sites

Another class to 90 on the S1 server, this time it's Knight.

Unlike every other class in this version, both of Knight's Second Job choices essentially just boil down to "First Job but better", gaining no unique attacks with the advancement (similar to Treasure Hunter mentioned above). In exchange, Templar offers defensive buffs and temporary invulnerability on a lengthy cooldown - clearly this version's intended tank - whereas Guardian is more of an ersatz Monk of questionable quality.
Despite the minor letdown of zero new offensive skills in the switch, Knight's core offensive kit is surprisingly satisfying to handle regardless, so it's not as big of a loss as it might appear.

The devs actually did something rather clever with Knight's Mace-specific skill tree in particular. Its lowest-tier skill, Stun Impact, has a short cooldown at only 3 seconds, with its follow-up Chaos Impact cooling down at 4 seconds.
These two skills are on such short cooldowns as to allow for easily-looping Skill Combos when sequenced correctly alongside higher-tier attacking skills, keeping Knight in the fray against knockback through continual Skill-granted superarmor, and leading to a class which is thematically very good at holding its ground.

Sounds obvious given its intended status as the game's obligatory tank, sure. But for context, its closest comparison around the same time in Maplestory's Paladin had zero meaningful defensive capabilities, no aggro control, and got pushed around just as easily as any other melee class in that title.
The fact that the LaTale devs from ~2008 were actually sort-of onto something in how an MMO tank could handle in a 2D sidescroller well ahead of its clearest competition is pretty impressive to see, even if its execution isn't perfect.

Was going to stop here originally, but what the heck, let's give this server's Warrior a shot next. Might as well while this thread is still here.
