Spiral Knights is a free-to-play, top-down, dungeon exploring action MMO. It plays similarly to the 2D Zelda games.

As much as 2013 me would hate to hear it, after getting better at the game I've started to really enjoy fighting Greavers. Most of the game is easy for me now and I really like it when Greavers spawn and I have to lock in. I've learned how to consistently deal with them so they no longer feel unfair at all. They're unironically some of my favorite enemies nowadays.
>>
>>2723017
They’re dangerous, but manipulable, consistent, and fast to take down with the right approaches. Have always liked them. Only unfair en masse with unsuitable weapons
>>
>MMO
False advertising.
It's a 1-3 player multiplayer game where the level selector is a shared chat lobby.

>0, 1, 2 star forge prize boxes obtained from the forge are now locked to pirate as they acquire them from the forge. This means they can no longer be traded.

How did making money like this even work? Also, why not do 3-5 star forge boxes then?
>>
>>2726646
>How did making money like this even work?
You can buy 0-2 star gear from an NPC, you then heat it from 1 to 10 for a chance to get boxes which you could then sell on the auction house for around 15-20k cr.
>Also, why not do 3-5 star forge boxes then?
You have to craft them, which means using orbs of alchemy, which means you have to buy them, ruining any chance at profits. Not that it matters but you get 5 fire crystals of a lower rarity when you craft them, so it's also more bang for your buck to heat up lower star gear.

Genuinely dumb change, it was one of the few competitive alternatives to FSC farming and made UV rolling more affordable.
>>
FINALLY soloed Compound 42 without using my emergency revive! That's every danger mission properly cleared now.
I think I'd rank their difficulty as C42 >> GitM > HoI > LoA
C42 is definitely still the hardest for me. I've cleared the others with ease multiple times. I don't see myself casually clearing C42 with ease anytime soon.
>>
>>2727292
>You have to craft them
Can't you just buy 3* stuff from AH or use boss tokens to buy equipment to level and then just sell the equipment back to vendors after leveling? Or is that actually more expensive than just buying the orbs making it still useless?
>>
>>2727466
You CAN get 3* equipment, but you will eventually burn through all your 3* fire crystals (I managed this) whereas you can actually just outright buy lower rarity crystals
I still have a huge hoard of 4* crystals I can craft down to 3*, sure, but it takes a while since you have to craft them one craft at a time

LMFAO
I was trying and failing to decipher that wording earlier but never even considered that they might have mixed up their game's characters. That's extremely embarrassing.
>>
>>2727833
They haven't understood their own game since all the talent left in 2013 but actively mixing Puzzle Pirates up with SK is just sad lol
>>
>>2727646
How often would you get a box? Would it be every item lv'd to 10 or every few items?
>>
>>2729147
"Every few items" is what you should expect from any rarity. According to an old datamine, the rate differs with rarity, and not with level except at Lv9->Lv10 where the rate is doubled. 0~2* boxes were added with the forge changes a couple months back and they've shadownerfed them at least once.

If you ever get fodder 5* gear from FSC tokens, stop leveling them and vendor them at Lv5 or so since the costs spike up very fast past that point and your rates don't improve with them.
>>
>>2729169
>If you ever get fodder 5* gear from FSC tokens, stop leveling them and vendor them at Lv5 or so since the costs spike up very fast past that point and your rates don't improve with them.
I guess you could use the shield from FSC since that wouldn't interfere very much. Too bad the sword costs more tokens because otherwise could fill two slots with them.
>>
>>2729992
The 4* shield’s worth 15k less when vendored unless you craft it to 5* which requires Rock Salt from the prize wheel or RJP tokens, and even then it’s still 5k less crowns thanks to the crafting cost than if you’d bought Ancient Plate or FoV, but if you’ve got excess of both tokens it’s a pretty good deal since you’re getting a shot at both 4* and 5* boxes.

>people were making new characters to farm boxes
if this is true these retarded niggers ruined it for the rest of us, most actually sane people were farming on their established main character with a single real weapon to kill stuff for heat and then a bunch of low rarity stuff to forge which it sounds like they would've been sorta fine with
But also yeah idk the point of these boxes are to "help" new players, you'll still be able to do a roundabout gamble where you spend the UV tickets on desirable gear until you hopefully get a really good UV and then you sell that on the MB but it won't be guaranteed per hour profit and you won't be able to do it on a brand new character that you then delete
>>
>>2731954
>experienced players creating new characters solely to farm a box quickly

Correct, it doesn't stop alt abuse at all.

>>2733673
It's the free equipment and crystals, though I spent way too long thinking about this because of how much GH being clueless even on basic things like this pisses me off and I came to the conclusion that even if you're heavily abusing rank mission rewards and the starting proto set it's far slower than just buying 0* gear off of Vatel and playing stages normally.

Changing how the freebies work, backloading forge boxes to later heat levels, or straight-up locking Punch until after Snarby would be enough to stop this if it really mattered, but it doesn't and I have no idea why GH bothered in the first place.

On other news, Tethya (the group that was working on a private server) ceased to work on the private server.
The development had already halted after the main coder got hired by GH (he was later laid off a few months after).
They're going to make their own "Spiritual Sucessor" for Spiral Knights.

I suppose we are stuck with GH forever now.

Grey Havens in a nutshell. "Easier and faster to release" my ass; they've set the bar for themselves unbelievably low and they STILL don't deliver when they bother to do anything because they don't give enough of a shit and expect to get away with it, not for lack of resources nor because the game's too difficult to work with.

Do you think there's a possibility of an event extension due to the server issues? I want to grind 4* spikes but I can't make it out of Emberlight.

Got fixed several hours ago on last patch. And we got two arcade gates full of construct floors. Odd star spikes still a bottleneck (Tiny spike mostly because no proper T1 gate).
And don't even bother with minute shards at all.
>>
>>2866534
not really sure what they were thinking with minute, they serve literally no purpose
can't craft them into tiny, they just shit up the 1st stratum and exist to make you speedrun to D5
at least you don't need a ton of tiny shards to get past the Slicer

I'm still experiencing server issues in Deconstruction zones

The best team member from Three Rings was PolygonCherub and Grey Havens didn't manage to hire him back. It was pretty much downhill from there.
>>
This Tiny spike grind actually sucks ass, at least it's only 300 but having to speedrun three levels in stratum 1 and then having super unreliable Stratum 2 levels is rough.
I do an entire Tier 1 Sapphire King run to Moorcroft and if I'm lucky I get two levels (one if I'm not)
>>
Holy, the new gate is nothing but constructs (and a ton of arenas at that) for T2
>>
>Arena is nearly 50 small spikes
>Chattering compound counts as a construct
Nice, this gate is literally full farm T2. Obviously manually added by the devs but super nice to have a gate that lets you farm with no downtime after the miserable T1 grind.
>>
>Wolver Alpha gets 3 spikes
>it's now a Sekiro boss where you get one animation canceled sword attack before having to dodge the instant combos it puts out and it takes like 20 hits to kill
I get what they were going for but this shit is just obnoxious sometimes, the game was not really this lacking in difficulty
also holy fuck I wish they'd have introduced a spike pickup delay to monsters, we have one so if you kill a monster you have to wait until the spike spawns on the ground but monsters don't so even if you're standing on top of the corpse a monster with two spikes will just instantly absorb the spike before it spawns and triple spike facefuck you
>>

have you enjoyed the disjointed ultra instinct critters like bunnies?
Let a bunny get two or even three spikes and enjoy, I had one literally teleport across the map and slap me and aside from trying to prevent them from getting spikes there's pretty much nothing you can do about them
I guess you could shield and pray
I don't know man I appreciate that it's *new* content but some of the spike interactions are insane and not in a good way
>>
Would it really kill them (or economy) to have spikes give +1% speed to player for rest of the level?
>>
>>2877578

I don't even think it should be permanent, it should be a temporary boost to speed and damage for like 5s for each spike pickup (stacking)

Not sure if you guys noticed but there was a steam leak just recently with a TON of shit...
Including spiral knights, specifically seemingly non-public depots.
Link: steam2 (dot) download
I'm not *entirely* sure what's on there but... if it has server files, even if they're outdated it might allow a far *far* easier time trying to make a private server. Depots 99901 and 99902 seem to be windows and mac depots respectively. I doubt it's anything more than old ass game files, but if anyone has the know how, maybe check in there and see if they have anything more interesting?

>>
>>2893768
We're on the tail end of a brand new event. There's maybe a tiny chance it gets extended to make up for server issues but I won't hold my breath
You could probably grind out the 3* gun if you really wanted to but there's not really enough event time left for the 4*
It looks like the dev team wants to soft relaunch the game with new content and events and we'll see but at least they have in fact added new content for the first time in years
>>
>>2893637
I think the one that really is like fucked is the 3500 larges.
>>
>>2893907
Timing a run, it took me about 21 minutes to 4 stages from D19 to D23
There's gonna be some variance in spikes per run, time per run, but rough napkin math for that is 5.5 hours for the 2000~ spikes I still need
If you really lock in and have good weapon choice and avoid unnecessary mobs/treasure chests let's say you can get that down to 5h, 2.5h/1000
That's still 7.5 hours or a full fucking day's shift at the Spiral Knight factory for just the larges for just the 5*
Add another 2~ hours for the Huges, since you're grinding them alongside the larges until you have enough but every minute spent grinding huges is a minute not spend gaining larges
Kinda mental honestly
I've seen some figures benching the gun around 15 hours of playtime which is probably a reasonable estimate but man
I should've done more grind per day but something about this event has just been demoralizing me, I'd get one run done and the desire to play would just evaporate

I would gladly pay money to have this game or one with similar aesthetics but with offline functionality, P2P hosting, and without the grind.

There are so many games out there that I used to love and that were unlike anything else, but having to rely on online functionality and worst yet F2P mechanics are just too much of a dealbreaker for me these days. Not to mention FOMO.

Presumably if these changes go through without any issue (although there were people bitching about their broken whale weapons being touched and stupid fucking people who want the DVS to stay Normal because "WE NEED A NORMAL POISON WEAPON") they'd move on to a second round of weapon rebalancing
>>
>>2931726
dude that entire debacle about some retards wanting dvs to remain normal was so fucking stupid.
even with split normal/shadow dmg the dps loss against undeads/devilites is not significant at all
in exchange you get a giantic dmg increase against every other family making dvs (and whb) not dogshit.

i watched the video of a guy testing them and against undeads/devilites on T3 atm DVS deals 160 dmg
and with split shadow/normal DVS deals 139.

But against anything else split/shadow deals upwards 210+ dmg

most of the posters in the forums were happy with the changes, besides some very vocal dipshit crying about having his bugged mixmaster behaviour fixed and the retards that dont want DVS to be good.
>>
>>2934862
presumably they want the DVS to just do huge normal damage and basically be better than the WHB in every way aside from against Beasts/Fiends where it gets to do slightly more, but that's not how normal damage weapons work and for the most part normal is really only viable on weapons that hit really hard like the Callahan/Sudaruska
Considering the shadow is SPLIT damage and not pure, and the weapon does MORE against neutral and only a bit less against ineffective I really can't see the argument they're trying to make outside of "I want a gay retarded gimped weapon because I don't like damage types being thematic, stop making poison weapons shadow damage!"

He's the classic "NO DUDE YOU CAN'T NERF MY HYPER BROKEN INVESTMENT ITS WORTH REAL MONEY I PAID $$$ FOR THIS" like sorry bro you've had a decade to play the game on easy mode, I hope they crater it
Actually the weirdest fucking part is he's been saying shit like "add them to the supply depot" like he doesn't even care about the money aspect he just wants a genuinely braindead broken crutch weapon that he can fall back on because he's supremely dogshit at the game (see him whining the Mandolin is bad when it's actually stupidly good despite being normal damage and not having old discgun projectiles)

kek I forgot it's the Iron Slug (I don't have one) that deals Normal
But kinda proves the point, even the Iron Slug is sort of a whatever weapon - against neutral targets like constructs the Winter Grave does the same damage, so why bother with the Iron Slug? The only situation the Iron Slug pulls out ahead is if you're fighting Fiends/Undead, but at that point you swap out for the Callahan which shreds fiends while being as good against undead. The only reason you'd want to use the Iron Slug is to have a generalist weapon where you never need to swap, and it does enough damage with the charge to sorta justify that. I can't imagine any scenario where I'd want a normal damage cutter, the damage is too low and it would probably lose the stagger that the upgraded WHB/DVS get. I'm also not sure what they're trying to poison that resists shadow, I swear I saw some bullshit like Trojans but who the fuck is trying to kill trojans with a cutter? I'm not even sure I'd use the piercing WHB against Trojans unless it was my only effective weapon. I also kinda feel like trying to apply poison with swords/guns is a meme in general, shit dies too quickly outside of spikes/heavy gremlin healer presence non-Venom Veiler poison application to really matter

Test server Round 2;
Mixmaster, Orbitgun, and slicer-line bullets will now only "fizzle" when they intersect the knight that fired the gun.
Mixmaster and Orbitgun bullet firing angle has been adjusted to hopefully more closely match their original incarnations.
Faust and Avenger Fixes: Charge attack bullet speed and lifespan reverted
Faust and GF self Curse duration has been reduced
Faust: Fix the tooltip to accurately show damage
Vile Striker and Dread Venom Striker damage no longer split with Shadow, Normal damage increase, chance to inflict Poison increased on all attacks.
Troika unchanged from previous preview release.
Cutter and Striker unchanged from previous preview release.
Hunting and Wild Hunting Blades unchanged from previous preview release.

Damn, normal/shadow split was objectively better, fuck those retards in the feedback forum.

It's crazy that they listened to a loud minority of shitters trying to sabotage the weapon, but the current forum thread is LOUDLY in favor of the shadow split so they'll probably end up doing that in the end. I just hope they can push it through instead of doing a third round of testing so we can move on to new weapons.
Pretty much everything else is good, the Faust/GF self curse is still probably obnoxious but the weapon type is good enough to not need to be nitpicked over until it's perfect

I don't buy the "mandolin is bad because enemies react to it!" argument since baiting out enemy dodge reactions is a good thing when you can do it continuously, with no risk, in a game where every enemy takes at least half a second to complete its reaction, where you can just not fire the weapon and swap to magnus normals or a low knockback bomb if you really need to avoid tripping up a teammate.
>It's a teamplay weapon because enemies don't react to it and I can kite and fire at them for absolutely free
is delusional downplaying with how it doesn't interact with teammates positively either and how much more space you need to control an enemy with raw distance alone. The shitty artificial difficulty event we just had only shone a spotlight on that too. It's just free damage. Why not run DBB or haze bombs for actual "teamplay" loadouts since the former can flinch and the latter doesn't take aggro? And he's for sure got them because he postured a bunch about using them in compounds to save poor new players from people rushing the keys and buttons in the rooms designed to be rushed because of the pervasive dropless / respawning mini trash.

He's got pretty shit and closed-minded takes all around, but it surprised me to see him go to bat so hard for what would've been a buff to his sacred cow weapon type just because it would become marginally more complicated to use. Oh no, enemies try to dodge a weapon that already has perfect mobility, can do its job better and set up for the other meta weapons to do their jobs better too!

And then the gall to browbeat over his 1000$ waste instead of wanting what's best for the game overall. Give the dumb whales a legacy version of the diskguns and then make a new copy that isn't blatantly unfinished, then everyone would win.

>Iron Slug vs. Winter Grave
WG's freeze gives the charge more damage near the end of its lifespan since it negates the high knockback of the weapon. It also makes it more consistent when firing at enemies that aren't facing you, what with the knockback uniquely being judged by where the enemy is turned rather than the origin of the projectile. Conversely, against freeze-immune targets or when using IS/Callahan, it's possible to get more hits overall when firing from closer range, where it eats Lumbers for breakfast and can more easily corner Lichen Colonies and a number of other priority targets that would warrant the damage, commonly in danger rooms where enemies' depth is prorated by like +3

Neutral or even resistant damage works when a weapon does so much fucking damage that it doesn't matter. Iron Slug is one such case next to Callahan where enemies' lifespans are measured in charge attacks or whether they're already flinching, in which case doing ~20% more damage won't matter very much, and so IS ends up more useful in stages with mixed enemy types.

Hopefully DVS reverting to Normal doesn't stick; split dmg doubledipping on defense bonuses aside, I can't see myself ever using a cutter without the roughly +60% dmg it enjoyed from being split Normal/Shadow against Shadow-weak targets, since the cutter moveset is frankly terrible with its low range and late flinch. Goes without saying that losing split dmg means it'll benefit much less from its own poison, Sera ray debuff or Mask cloak buffs, too.

Actually, you know what, fuck making a legacy copy. P2W broken weapons SHOULD get relegated to history and get removed completely with how ass they are to play with as a teammate.

At least with shadow the flinch was reliable and could be played around with. I think the best case scenario here is that they revert to shadow BUT keep the increased poison application because honestly most shit dies so fast when you're running damage max (and 90% of people are, either from Chaos+BTS/trinket or from BK) that you never even get to apply the poison
Honestly if the code could support it, but it probably doesn't and it'd probably take a significant amount of time and resources to implement, I'd like to see DVS do poison application GUARANTEED on EVERY hit but it's a stacking effect. So your first hit is light poison, your second hit bumps the enemy up to being inflicted with moderate poison, and on the third hit the enemy is now suffering strong poison. You will ALWAYS inflict strong poison by the third hit, instead of now where you could inflict it on the first hit or the fifth (and most enemies should be dead by the fifth hit in the combo, but stacking poison might have you killing some enemies in 3 hits when they'd take 4 and some in 4 hits when they'd take 5?)
I'd be tempted to apply this stacking/scaling to shock and maybe stun as well. I think fire application is in a pretty good place and growing fire makes a bit less sense, and sleep+freeze are binary. I might give fire+freeze RNG+stacking though; you can fire/freeze on the first hit, but if you don't proc the % chance it builds visual embers/frost on the enemy and the % to inflict goes up for your next hit.

That'd be good in a game that was designed.
Status chances for player weapons should be much higher in general, at least for Fire and Poison. Give Obsidian Carbine and Plague Needle nearly guaranteed Poison and suddenly they're fantastic weapons, Flamberge guaranteed Fire and it can keep up with Flourish, etc etc
>>
I think I've discussed how I'd personally balance the (Gran) Faust before but - the curse locks you out of every weapon slot but the GF (no curse RNG, your Gran Faust will NEVER be locked by curse)
In exchange for this Faustian Bargain of not being able to use any other weapons, you get increased move speed and attack during the curse duration that makes the Gran Faust even more powerful to use.
Or, maybe if we want to keep the "trading your soul" aspect, we go the entire opposite direction - the Gran Faust ONLY curses itself (but inflicts a short 10-15 second curse 100% of the time on charge attack)
You take slightly less damage from swinging with this curse than normal, and your attacks in this cursed/empowered form do SIGNIFICANTLY more damage than normal Faust attacks. So you trade your own HP away for significantly more damage; you could also maybe code it to inflict Sera's Heart Attack effect on targets hit, causing them to drop more hearts on average to counterbalance the extra damage you're inflicting to yourself.

I think there are a LOT of cool ways they could play with the Faust's charge attack/self curse that'd make it a really unique, interesting and fun to use weapon rather than just "it has a chance to fuck you over when using the charge attack so maybe just stick to normals"

Agree. The more the player can actively plan and play around, the better. It's not hard to iterate and make something better than having to pay a remedy capsule tax (or just using more weapon slots to ignore the curse).
