BF2 is one of those games that is for sure supported by "nostalgia" in some of its praise. That being said, it does have qualities that people like that current BFs don't provide. The major difference is that on the spectrum of "milsim to arcade", Bf2 leans more towards the milsim side of the spectrum vs recent BFs. Its not a milsim by anymeans, but overall trends a bit more towards that side of the fence.

That being said, that leads to a few things. One of which is vehicle strength. Vehicles can be super strong in this game. Dam near unkillable if you're an infantry trying to kill one. This can be a pro and a con depending on who you talk to. Recent Bfs its pretty easy to kill vehicles. Bf6 reduced it to a degree, but 2042 it was really bad. C4, rockets, etc. Jets in Bf2 are infamously seen as overpowered. "100 kills, 0 deaths" type of meme. So in short, vehicles were a huge threat and not easily taken down by infantry without vehicle support.

Alongside this, the other things people commonly praise for Bf2.
>Spawn System
No more spawning on beacons or any squad members. Could only spawn on flags or the squad leader. Promoted sticking with your SL and teamwork more
>Gun play
Its not this fast paced, "CoD-like" streamer shooter like recent Bfs. No sliding or whatever. There was dolphin diving (dive to prone and open fire). And that was shit. But overall it punished you a bit more for "moving too much" while shooting or just going full auto.
>Movement
Slower. No sliding and zippin around. You had stamina, so no infinite sprint.
>Commander Mode
Side objectives and a whole dynamic there
>Social of Custom Servers
Probably wouldn't happen today due to discord. But player hosted servers allowed a whole social dynamic. Getting to know people in servers, establish a rapport, etc.
>Health
No HP regen. Medics were far more important for their healing as a result

Game still had problems. Vehicle/class balance mainly. But Bf2 led to games like squad

fyea I see i playe dinfantry and got destroyed by vehicles constantly... Seems like the shooting is super random too. lots of bloom/random recoil
>>

Ive gotten a taste for op vehicles raping inf from playing ww2 games. there was always some vet who knew they had to pick the role and Id just follow around sometimes. except for the AT naders, insane suicidal mainiacs.
how are people playing this game in the current year? surely I dont have to pay to play right?

Yeah the shooting is way different. Trying to treat the gunplay like any recent BFs is not good. You burst/single shot fire at most ranges except close quarters. There's even some "quirks" about some guns, if I remember correctly. Like some of the snipers, the cross hairs in the scope when you aimed is not centered. That is where the cross hairs is does not match up to where it is in the scope. But I would suggest watching some youtube gameplay and you can see how people shoot in there.

I haven't played in awhile, but you gotta jump through some hoops if you want to play online. Typically involving downloads from third party websites. So do so at your own risk. There's some guides online if you just google "How to play Bf2 online" and look for recent stuff. Some of it is out dated.

damn looks like bf2hub and all that got shut down 10 months ago. not sure if there is a way to play now

Yeah, I'm sure with the increased hardware costs and all that kind of stuff that's been happening to the AI boom recently, probably getting harder to keep it going. Looks like it was up and running at least 2 days ago though. watch?v=JIPHZsuqP3E on youtube. Pretty impressive pop all things considered. A little over 200 players I think.

I keep saying, but it would be so easy for them to attract these players in Bf6. Create a commander mode (we know its possible because someone did it in portal). Then put in an alternate "classic" game mode. Don't hide the gamemode in the UI (since we know DICE likes to do that to prove their own point). All the gadgets in Bf2 are in the game in some form or another. All the weapons (or close) are in there. There's even a good chunk of portal configuration already there. Like you can make it so you can turn off sliding I believe, turn off regen health for people/vehicles, squad leader only spawning. Maybe increase bloom for shooting while moving. All they need is a stamina bar + commander mode and it would be set.
