>7 years since the last content update
>3 years of nothing, then a few years of bug fixes and new cosmetics here and there
>3 weeks ago the testing servers are put back online for a new event, glowing spikes appear in some levels that buff monsters and can be collected and exchanged for things
>Third testing session, new gun is added with a completely new model. It's a craftable version of a type of gun that used to be exclusive to super rare developer-made sales on the auction house, or the biannual "equinox" loot box with a low drop rate
>Entire community is hyped, for years there have been discussions of how those guns shouldn't be behind a paywall and should be craftable, and how overpowered they are
>The event is put in the main game, along with the new gun. The 2 star "slicer" which can be upgraded to the 5 star "mandolin"
>Takes spikes from the event as a crafting material
>Developer's announcement says they "want to maintain the rarity of these guns, and make having one a true achievement"
>Check recipes (picture related)
>The slicer recipe takes 400 spikes, and you only need more of even harder-to-get spikes from there on
>Only construct-themed levels can have spikes, but you have to go through the ones that don't have any anyways. The type of spike depends on level difficulty, and for each level you might get about 30, which might take anywhere from 6 to 15 minutes
>Everyone is apalled by and complains about the ridiculous amount of grinding that artificially inflates the difficulty of getting one of these
>fuckin somehow, one guy puts a mandolin up for sale the next day
>Some players start to get ideas on how to farm spikes more efficiently
>Levels can be played in groups of up to 4 players, so you can play with 3 alt accounts to get 4 times as many spikes from one level

>A certain type of level can have "danger rooms", which you have to pay a bit of in-game money to go into. They contain one room with lots of enemies of any one type, regardless of what kind of enemy you find in the rest of the level
>One particular danger room has zombies, and it comes with a totem that revives zombies that die close to it
>One spike appears per enemy that spawns, and it turns out that you can get theoretically infinite spikes in a single danger room if you keep killing zombies next to the totem
>The method of farming with alts and looking for the right danger room becomes known to more players, and they abuse it as much as they can
>From this update, a game that, up until recently, saw barely over 100 players online daily, now has 750 players online, many of them alts, farming spikes in the same level and only leaving it after getting at most 3000 spikes, which could take hours
>At one point, players on the European server are disconnected. They can be in the town areas, but are met with a black screen if they try to play any level
>They might get into a level, but they are disconnected again a few minutes later
>The farmers migrate to the north-American server, and later face the same issues
>The Australian server goes down after that
>Only the south-American server remains, but that one probably went down too
I always find it so funny and amazing when stuff like this happens in online videogames, stuff that breaks the game and no one can ignore and will be remembered by players
