where can i go to role play? i'm old and burnt out on video games and craving something with like:>slow progression of a single character>lots of equipment slots for playing dressup>the ability to have an in world player home>lots of lifeskills>lots of pve>full pvp and full loot pvp that isn't the main focus of the game>player run economyi just want to carve out a little life for myself in a virtual sandbox where all of my interactions are with other people not npc quest givers.some games i'm looking at that might be what i want?>neverwinter nights>project zomboid>tes3mp>uo outlands>vintage storyi used to play a lot of pre-trammel uo, wurm online, and a now dead game called face of mankind. i yearn for these types of games where you log in and the only way to really engage with the world was to role play in some capacity with other people and, like, make your own goals that require time and effort to accomplish.
>>2929424>>full pvp and full loot pvpKills games, most people just want to relax and not get griefed by some faggot who gets his fun by keeping other people from having theirs.
>>2929651i get this, it's been a problem forever. it just makes the game feel more real to me when that's a risk.when it becomes the main way people are playing the game it's boring, but an rpg without thieves and bandits feels a little lifeless.i'm okay with pve only if people aren't just locked into solo grinding/raiding without chatting or interacting with each other at all outside of lfg.
>>2929651honestly if theres no full loot pvp then its just a bad singleplayer game or at best a co op pve game. if theres no risk then you have no gameplay loop the gameplay is just a straight line and straight lines have an ending. devs can try to distract you from that fact by making it take forever to level or adding new content every few years but the game will still end just like a singleplayer game youll beat the game and i think that goes against what an mmo should be at least in my opinion. i dont really give a shit if "most people" are turned off by that cuz most people are gonna buy gta 6 when it comes out. i want a game i can sink years into and thats not possible unless theres some form of risk involved because if theres no risk then sooner or later youll beat the game because youll never have any setbacks just steady progress. it really blows my mind how people can play a theme park like wow for 99999 hours it must be a learning disability or something.
>>2929424Lord of the rings online
>>2930578+And believe it or not LOTRO is VERY active.
>>2929424Surprised to hear vintage story as a suggestion, but that's actually a good call.I haven't played multiplayer yet, but i can confirm that it's probably what you're looking for. most of the servers i saw were explicitly RP focused (several of them had a discord backing the server - whether that's a pro or con is subjective)A lot of the servers also use the extended classes mod, which presses players into being more specialized (e.g; more extreme pros & cons to specific abilities, and more class-specific recipes)Vanilla progression is indeed slow - modded often even slower - I have two worlds I've put >100hrs into, and I haven't gained end-game tools in either of them. I'm close, but not quite. Someone prioritizing tool-progression probably could get them within an in-game year, if they were sweaty, though. Also, chiselling is very fun. I imagine if you're good at it, you can probably just live as a towny, and sell some nice decorative things you've chiseled to wealthy patrons, to buy your food and tools.Dressup is already pretty good; making the armor system modular, and thereby customizable, is the priority of the upcoming update. picrel is a preview the devs posted earlier this year.
>>2929424I understand the desire for this but I don't think it exists anymore in any meaningful way. This kind of thing largely appealed to millenials (and maybe some later gen-Xers) while they were growing up or in early mid-life and the world was starting to "get smaller" via tech advancements surrounding the internet. We are past this period now, unfortunately, the drive to communicate globally is fatigued due to decades of social media chicanery and those that one would talk to in these environments have fallen into three categories:>They started families and don't have time to throw away in a simulated online world>They are mentally ill (schizos, trans, etc), gay, or otherwise single (social rejects)>They are stay at home wives or lonely hamplanets/cat-ladies who will spend all their time being internet karens in your online environmentOr a dreaded fourth category:>Third-worlders, "lucky" if its just a south american ESL, worse if its from India or an asian countryWhich means even if you do find what you're looking for you're going to be spending all your time with the above people instead of forming enjoyable and desirable social connections like you might've 20 years ago.
>>2929424If you're okay with 2d, byond has a number of alright ones from ss13 to Eternia (and apparently Trace/ALTER albeit I haven't checked that one out). Eternia is the one I would recommend you check out as it fills out some of those bubbles, albeit its in a little of a weird place at the moment. Very roleplaying and writing centric though, so be warned.
