I love Marathon. Marathon is brutal in ways that count. Sure I wont die of starvation from not feeding my character in raid, or run out of stamina aiming for twenty seconds, but the important things count.

If I want an item, I have to extract with it, I cant just hide it in my anus. To extract I need to ring a dinner bell with a 200ft beam of light and linger for a minute, and only then can I have the privilege of standing in a deafening circle for ten seconds before I actually get to keep my stuff. Theres no slipping out quietly, helI the entire map is a giant proximity alarm maze that must be navigated perfectly not to betray my position to the enemy- and I wouodnt have it any other way.

Lesser extraction games pride themselves on being brutal, but Marathon really is the last holdout of the true chad.

Woe to those that scurried back to their safe spaces: should Marathon fall, the happy few kicked out of Valhalla will have to quench their blood thirst in your pitiful realms.

Flee, for that is what you do, but beware that Runners have remarkable stamina.

A survival mode would be nice - just a knife, no consumables, no guns, no anything other than a knife, no exfil timer - you have to trigger exfil manually.
Sponsored mode for PvP is great too. Just wish it would also apply to Ranked and tiers of Ranked. Platinum 1 and Pinnacle? Knife only. Like, nothing spawns on the map - no consumables, no weapons, no nothing. Knife is all you have. Now THAT is the pinnacle of challenge.

Anyway, i've been enjoying Sponsored Surivival, its nice that we have it for two weeks too, along with all the faction and xp boosts.
Command Wing chest sucks when it comes to loot. Barely any gold items there - yesterday after 15 or so runs got 1 - just 1 - volt protection implant.

Back in Season 1 i did it solo with Assassin, Ghost Protocol core, knife and 9 smoke grenades. You have to get lucky with people opening the pinwheel before 15 minute mark. After that - activate PAs, then infiltrate, activate both access points, run into command wing, toss prime, knife in smoke two ghost bosses and rest of the mooks, THEN activate console, toss a smoke nade near it, and wait in shadows to knife Recruit bots. And keep area smoked - from prime or nades. If you have claymores - even better.

This season i did it in Sponsored Surival - i simply trapped my teammates in. Kinda helped that i was Sentinel and we had time to pull it off - we looted everything we wanted before it was even 4 minutes to final warning (so 6 minutes in total). They were not happy, but i was - did not have to sweat the mission, and timing was done just right, same with the shell pick.

I got filtered too - i played it for about a month after release, and got a severe case of regret. Ditched it for a month, went to play something better - Atomfall. Then after finishing that game, came back to Marathon to get a skin for a gun from challenge. Stayed until the end of season because CARRI + faster progression, but above all else - figured i can just do my thing solo and not have to rely on team or babysit them. It went so good - got all the achievements, completed all faction priority contracts, got Codex filled out - that i was excited for Season 2. And it was great too, atleast the start of it, despite server issues.

Game is difficult - you have to trial-and-error a lot of things, and get a feel for things too - like timing, what makes more or less sound, which guns suck or are fit for some specific task, when to exfil, what noises and sounds to listen to, whether to engage or not.

Unfortunate thing is that game has no anti-cheat. On a basic level it has, so stupid shit like using CheatEngine to hack a stack of mats to 500 or give yourself credits will obviously not work. But shit like picrel? Hell no, no protection from that. And that is what made the game EXTRA unappealing - you were dealing with cheaters and you did not even know that. Especially in Cryo where all the good loot was. Look at picrel. See how cheat shows where batteries are? Yeah. And those cheats evolved to the point where they even show where gold/purple loot is, working off of Thieve's visor.
The reason why cheats were so early in Marathon and so successful was simple - Marathon is just an upgraded Destiny 2. And Destiny 2 had cheaters allover it, courtesy of it becoming F2P. Server Slam ran for a week or so? So it gave some time for those in the know/clique to start working on the cheats.

And then there is the issue with cross-play, and console shooter standard of legal aim bot, and Bungie "gunplay".

Ultimately - cheaters are what drove away the players.

You have to reset your Cradle 8 times to get 6 skins and 1 title - in one season. Frankly, only 1 skin is worth the bother - Thief one, and maybe the title. So you have to feed the worm, while still maintaining operational efficiency, meaning you have to not just feed junk to worms, you have to stockpile stuff so that if you reset, you can hit back to lvl 50-60 instantly. And the best way to do that is to pile up grey and green salvage. Have multiple stacks of 500 of anything really - you can achieve that with Rook quite nicely.

They should've increased damage on that level-action rifle, and range. Reload takes too long unless you use the right kind of chip mod, and rate of fire is not good either, it needs some decent trade-offs. That gold mode for it makes it feel a bit better, but you sacrifice an actual scope. I feel like it needs to have 4th mod slot.
Hardline should be upgraded across the board - more ammo capacity, better damage (slightly lower than level-action and magnum), definitely better range. You have twin tap for run-and-gun already.

I still stand by the point that they need to rework guns entirely and standardise damage respective to the calibre of ammunition. Shotguns and sniper rifles should get their own ammo types, ARES railgun should too. I would say that they need to simply introduce medium and shotgun ammo.

Light - 12 damage - CE SideArm, D54, Overrun, Brrt, KKV, Volley Rifle.
Medium - 18 damage - M77, Copperhead, Magnum, Twin Tap, Bully.
Heavy - 26 - that other assault rifle, Hardline, lever-action, revolver.
Shotgun - 8 damage per pellet, 10 pellets - WSTR, Misriah, maybe another one like super-shotgun or one from AVP 2010.
MIPS (sniper rounds) - 100 damage - Longshot, Outland, ARES.
Something like that. Guns should just modify how frequently, how far, and how much recoil you sustain when spewing lead, and how precise you are with your shots.

I would love it if they in future introduced proper grenade launchers, missile launcher, actual plasma and laser weapons too. These volt-actuated ones dont feel right.

You only get season XP from killing bots/runners and looting unopened containers (technically there's some other sources, like doing map events or most things in Cryo, but they're not easily farmable), and the XP from looting is paltry, so just commit robot genocide in Survival Outpost. Your round XP gets increased by 50% if you exfil, so it might be more efficient to crew fill if you die a lot, but if you're good then stick to solo because the XP isn't shared and you only get it if you land the final blow.

This game was interesting and special, when encounters with players were dangerous.
I think it will stop being special with the release of Symbiosis. Who cares about the damage-sponge aliens, when there's no runners to watch out for.
Trying to look at the aliens and learn about them, while avoiding, or destroying runners, would be more exciting.
Very interesting season 1, decently fun season 2, I don't think I'm gonna download season 3

Map is more difficult to explore, when PvP is a threat. Exploring the game is more rewarding, when you have to pay a price, you have to hide and avoid combat(or go in and win the fight). Then you earned the are to explore, look at muh graphics and listen to the sounds.
I don't give a fuck about anything in PvE games after playing Marathon. Other games are not rewarding.
Arc is a little bit, but purely PvE Coop games are a snoozefest

Had about half a dozen runs on Perimeter to get to lvl.5 and its interesting to see whats changed. Off the top of my head:

>Guns now seem to be heard from about TAD distance at max
>Enemies die to less hits but are following farther and searching for longer, seems alerting a single POI clanker has the whole POI run to you
>Have no seen the crows at all, think i maybe heard them once
>Rocket Drone spawned in way earlier
>Loot more generous. Spawned at South Relay and first large container had blue Overrun and a green shield, killed two ghosts inside for blue implants
>Grenades seem much rarer
>As expected full of sweats playing Assassin and Destroyer
>Station appears to have had a minor redesign with a new tower and piping/scaffolding to the south with the TAD up on there rather than in the hanger on the second floor
>Have not seen any Grenadiers
>Basic mooks seem to take a bit more gunfire to kill but die in one melee without 0 worms in the cradle as baseline now

Interesting changes. definitely feels like they want the whole 'zero to hero' deal to be the default, on Perimeter at least, and feels like it escalates far faster. Gonna be interested to see how Darsh changes since i like it but feel its the least popular map for the majority.
