It's all about passive and stats. If your unit scales with defense, get defense passive and check if the gear increase their defense or not. If your healer heals scales with HP, get HP passive and higher HP stats, etc. Power and rarity is a bit jank since sometimes you will have a 300 power weapon with amazing passives and high attack but it has 300 power because it has lower HP and Defense stat.

If I had to guess it's sort of a self insert thing alot of people tend to like immersion/role playing more than anything, I can't speak for everyone else but I've seen games do the self insert alot lately even with games that didn't have one starting out and only global players complain about it or dislike while our oversea friends love it.
