It feels like such a random Pokemon to focus on for the premiere, specially since it didn't even end on a capture, and it performing typically male gestures like flexing its muscles and showing off feels pretty off-character for something that evolves into a beautiful, delicate feminine mon.

I do not lament the concept of the anime returning to weekly misadventures, gag shows, and simple feel-good stories. I think there is room under the Pokemon umbrella for stuff like that. The issue I'm foreseeing with the current arc (other than the fact that the staff obviously doesn't want to make it) is that Horizons is fundamentally not that type of show. It isn't in HZ's bones to do something that's fun and satisfying in 22 minutes. The series lacks elastic, misadventure-ready characters, which can easily be fixed. The worse issue is animation.I stand by the opinion that the front half of PM19 was incredibly executed on the production side of things. Ayaka Koide, Shun Okawa, Isao Nanba, Kohei Shimazaki, almost every episode had cuts done by freelancers. They were shelling out the fucking CASH to give each episode a memorable element. Webm related stands out in my mind. Only in the anime would you ever get to see a shit ton of Pokemon doing fluent, well animated yoga. It's cute, funny, and the execution takes it from a 'meh' idea to an engaging and funny little scene.HZ had its niche cornered and I think the first arc was some of the strongest stuff to ever come out of Pokemon, but the pieces they assembled at that time just can't be rearranged into a goof-of-the-week type series. I'm not disappointed or disgusted by the current direction, I just wish OLM would take a break instead to get things in order for the next series.
