Why are they Ground type?
>>
gligar = bat + scorpion

bats fly

scorpions (can) live in the desert

It looks like their designers drew some inspiration from a variety of scorpions that like burrowing into the ground?

because i put it six feet under when i see it

They're a good example of the Ground-type being more thematic than elemental.
It's a gliding Pokemon, so it's both Ground-type and Flying-type to represent this transition between terrestrial and aerial lifestyles

GLIde+GARgoyle
>>
realistically speaking they probably just thought it would be more fun and interesting than another bug/flying or even poison/flying. And they were right.
>>
I want them to step on me
>>
Probably the whole desert scorpion bit
>>
Oldfag here, do they still make Pokemon that are like Gligar where it's a completely made up fusion of animals? It's a scopion and a bat fused into a gargoyl. It's not based on some vietnamese myth or anything. I feel like most of the weirder modern Pokemon are still just a cartoon version of an already complete concept.

Moron it's Gliger(it's japanese name) as in Giger the artist behind Alien

Pokedex:
>It flies straight at its target's face then clamps down on the startled victim to inject poison.
>This Pokémon hangs on to the face of its foe using its clawed hind legs and the large pincers on its forelegs, then injects the prey with its poison barb.
>Its tail is tipped by a thick, horrible stinger. To bring down prey, it will first obscure their vision by covering their faces with its body, and then it will use the stinger to inject them with venom.

It's a facehugger. They just didn't want another purple/blue bat with its tongue out to be poison/flying

Doesn't Gliger also literally facehug in the anime
>>
>>59302158
you know, it's times like these that I remember how referencemons can have merit and passion put into them. Every time you see mega starmie or mega feraligatr remember gligar, an obvious reference transformed into a very distinct and memorable pokemon.

It’s a scorpion bat thing
Bats fly so it’s flying type
Scorpions erm… live in the desert which is uh…a sandy place that has a lot to do with the ground so that’s why it’s ground type
>>
>>59302185
meanwhile skorupi...

the connection to poison is a lot stronger than to sand, even in gligar's case as shown by the pokedex entries >>59302158
>>

I immediately went to the Bulbapedia talk page because I knew there would be people arguing that it isn't a facehugger and must be some kind japanese youkai and bam there it was
