I got a little curious, so I was going to ask, but I decided to just download Archalduon's model and investigate myself. I've found it very interesting how his body has "perfect deformation." That probably doesn't make sense to you if you haven't modeled any characters so let me explain. If you were going to model Archaludon "the correct way," you'd start by modeling him in the straighten out "Bridge" form and then you'd meticulously add just the right amount of loop cuts, bones, and weight paint him so you could pose him standing upright. This would be a NIGHTMARE in practice because you'd have to iterate on the loop cuts, bone positions, and weight painting dozens upon dozens of times until he properly looked like the concept art. Even then, you're likely to be "slightly off" from the design. I know this, Gamefreak knows this, that's why I got so curious as to what they must've done.

They did not do it "the correct way," they did it "the easy way" and, what really surprises me, their method is really hacky and I have evidence. They modeled Archaludon in his upright position and in his bridge form separately. The "upright" model isn't capable of fully straightening out flat and his arms can't possibly deform to be the correct orientation even if he could straighten out properly (see pic). What happens in game is that they pull a switcheroo on you. When he turns into a bridge, they quickly hide the upright body and replace it with the straight body with the support cables.

Very fascinating to me that a rich company with infinite resources has to do this in a hacky way.

I thought it was interesting, anon. Thanks for sharing.

I did wonder how they did that.

wait I thought this was obvious? The two forms don't look alike at all

Aside from having to hide a switcheroo what's the visual difference between the two methods, as experienced by players?

Just a minor correction AFAIK creatures do all the models, not GF

I remember Meowstic's model having two sets of ears for the same reason. But now I went to check, back in XY there was a THIRD mesh for the glowing ears. Was this really efficient in any way?

In practice, it's fairly seamless, but if you want to be knitpicky you can point out how the arm is being twisted for a few frames and then is completely straight with no twisting in the bridge form.

No, they could've swapped between the glowing/dark ears the same way they swap between different eye and mouth textures.

Why is this creature weak to godzilla types?
