Pokemon has plenty of ""Dark"" stories its just that the writing is really shallow so it doesn't really communicate the weight of Lysandre trying to kill everyone in the world or Lusamine being an abusive mother.

It should never go more dark than Kingdom Hearts or Kirby, probably. Pokemon usually tends more towards the latter, if only because of the similar general stakes.

The anime has just flanderized the IP and made it less dark. There's that Cubone/Marowak story in Gen 1 for example.Still, trying to replicate those dark moments without coming across as corny would be a uphill battle these days.
