The only reason they rarely show distinctive physical trains (like Sandy, hero Lapras etc) is because of muh recognizability and also due to gamefreak being too lazy and incompetent to ever implement them. But at least they realized that scaling the models a bit is easy enough for them to implement (but just barely).
