He starts at super chill and cheerful, but keeps getting his ass beat by you and he eventually realizes that he's kind of just a jobber and not really helping anyone. So he actually starts trying instead of just "battling for fun" and puts some skin in the game. He's definitely better than May. She's introduced as a legit rising star trainer when you're first starting, but is immediately a mile behind you every time after, and just gets saltier and saltier with every loss while trying to hide it until they just quit battling all together before even fully evolving her starter.
